Directions For Writing a Screenplay

  1. 1. WRITE A SCREENPLAY TO GO WITH YOUR STORYBOARDWhat is a screenplay?A screenplay is a script written to be turned into a movie. It includes details of location, scene descriptions, sound effects / sound track and dialogue. You are going to write a screenplay based on the outline for your film story.Use my screenplay as a guide.1. Start with the words FADE IN2. Then describe the location and time of day.i.e. INT. (this stands for interior and means that the action takes place inside. If the action takes placeoutside, you use the letters EXT.) JOHN’S APARTMENT (where the action takes place) – DAY (is it day ornight?)INT. JOHN’S APARTMENT – DAY3. Describe the scene and include any sound effects:i.e. Close up on rubbish bin. Inside is an Order of Service booklet for the funeral of Gareth David Roberts.Silence4. Include any dialogue as well as directions for how the dialogue should be said. (Remember to include thename of the character saying the lines in capital letters). Dialogue should be indented from the edge of thepage. i.e. PERSONAL TRAINER (concerned) John, are you ok? JOHN (struggling to compose himself) Not really. I had some news this morning (pause) My step-father passed away.
