of folklore, misidentification, and hoax, rather than a living animal, because of the lack
of physical evidence and the large numbers of creatures that would be necessary to
maintain a breeding population. Occasional new reports of sightings sustain a small
group of self-described investigators. Most reports of sightings are attributed to being
various animals, particularly black bears.

The Terrifying Truth About Dracula
Vlad, or Dracula, was born in 1431 in Transylvania
into a noble family. His father was called "Dracul," meaning "dragon"
or "devil" in Romanian because he belonged to the Order of the
Dragon, he had fought the Muslim Ottoman Empire.
The name "Dracula" means "son of Dracul" in Romanian.
Thus, young Vlad was "son of the dragon" or "son of the devil."
At that moment, the legend Dracula the vampire was arising.
Warrior in Chains
Dracula had lived in a time of constant war. Transylvania was at the
frontier of two great empires: the Ottoman Turks and the Austrian Hapsburgs.
He was imprisoned, first by the Turks, who had ¹hauled him away in
chains, and later by the Hungarians. Dracula's father was murdered, while his older
brother, Mircea, was blinded with red-hot iron stakes and buried alive.
Vlad the Impaler
From 1448 until his death in 1476, Dracula had ruled Walachia and
Transylvania, both part of Romania today. Twice he had lost and had reclaimed his
throne, once by fighting his own brother, Radu. Although the Vatican once had
2praised him for defending Christianity, it disapproved of his methods, which soon
became infamous.
Dracula earned another nickname, "Vlad Tepes" (pronounced tsep-
pesh), which means "Vlad the Impaler." Dracula's favorite method of torture was to
3impale people and leave them to 4writhe in agony, often for days. As a warning to
others, the bodies would remain on rods as vultures and blackbirds nibbled the rotting
flesh.
During one battle, Dracula retreated into nearby mountains, impaling
people as he went. The Turkish advance was 5halted because the sultan could not
bear the stench from the 6decaying corpses.
Another time, Some people had reported him to have eaten a meal on a
table set up outside 7amidst hundreds of impaled victims. On another occasion he had
been reported to have eaten bread dipped in blood.
He was killed in December 1476 fighting the Turks near Bucharest,
Romania. Dracula's head was cut off and displayed in Constantinople.

__________________________________________________________________
4. Is the au pair considered a member of the host family?
__________________________________________________________________
5. Is it possible to live with more than one family in one year of an exchange program?
__________________________________________________________________
Exchange Program
Exchange students are usually students in high school or post-
secondary systems of education who leave their home countries to spend anywhere
between a few weeks and an entire year within a foreign country. During this time,
most must attempt to learn a new language and thus experience the culture through
the means of direct application
Types of Exchange
• An internship program
An internship is a temporary job with an emphasis on the job training
rather than merely employment, and it can be paid or unpaid. You also excel for
getting fluency in other language.
• Au Pair Program
Au Pair child care is a unique opportunity to provide a family with full-
time, live-in child care through a life-changing cultural exchange experience.
As a pre-screened international young adult from the country that the
family chooses, the Au Pair is a qualified care provider that they handpick to come and
live with another family for up to two years. He or she becomes an extended member
of the family and is personally invested in the happiness, well-being and success of
the children.
• Be a part of a host family
Most of exchange students live in houses of one or more host families
during the year. These people are expected to meet the exchange student’s basic
needs by providing them food and shelter. The families are encouraged to treat the
student like a child of their own – this means that exchange students are expected to
follow the rules of their host family as long as they are fair and suit the regulations of
the exchange organization.

American Classroom Customs
If the teacher asks a question, you are expected to give an answer. If you don’t
understand the question, you should raise your hand and ask the teacher to repeat the
question. If you don’t know the answer, it is all right to tell the teacher that you do not know.
Then he or she knows what you need to learn.
There is no excuse for not doing your homework. If you are absent, you should
call your teacher or someone who is in your class and ask for the assignment. It is your
responsibility to find out what assignments you have missed. It is not the teacher's
responsibility to remind you of missed assignments.
You must not be absent on a test day. If you are seriously ill, call and let the
teacher know you will not be there for the test. If your teacher allows make-up tests, you should
take the test within one or two days after returning to class. Serious illness is the only reason
for missing a test.
Be on time! It is considered rude to be late. Also, it bothers other students. If you
must come in late, be sure to do it quietly. Have your books and papers out of your bag before
you come into the room. Then go to your seat and sit quietly. In the U.S. it is not necessary to
knock before you enter the classroom. Most teachers will give you a low grade if you are often
late.
Have your book out and be ready to begin when class starts. Your teacher
should not have to ask you every day to take out your book. Be sure you have a paper and a
sharp pencil ready.
In America, you should call your teacher by his or her last name, not "teacher".
Also you should use Mr., Miss, Ms. or Mrs. before the last name (such as Mrs. Smith or Mr.
Jones). This is considered polite. The teacher will tell you his or her preferred title.
Be courteous to other students. If another student is answering a question,
giving a report or an explanation, you should listen quietly and give them your attention.
Everyone must be treated with the same respect you would like them to give to you. Also, the
question they are asking may be something you need to know.
It is considered impolite in the U.S. to eat, drink or chew gum during class. This
is reserved for the break. Also, removing one's shoes in the classroom is not polite.
Zero Conditional
• Situations that are always true if something happens.
• Used to speak about facts, habits or actions that always have the same outcome.
If (present simple clause), (present simple clause)
Ex.: If I am late, my father takes me to school.
If the banana is yellow, it’s ready to be eaten!’
* Note: For the zero conditional, we can use ‘when’ instead of ‘if’.
Talk to your partner, then report to the class the Brazilian Classroom Customs.
Discuss the differences. Which customs are best in your opinion?
Now read the text again and identify the zero conditional cases on the text.
Answer These Questions
1. When the teacher asks a question, you should ___.
a. raise your hand.
b. give an answer.
c. repeat the question.
2. If you miss a class, what should you do to find out what assignment was given?
a. call the teacher or a classmate.
b. give an excuse.
c. remind the teacher you were absent.
If you must leave during class, do so quietly.
There is no need to ask the teacher's permission. However, leaving the class for
something other than an emergency is not acceptable. (Getting a drink or sharpening your
pencil is not considered an emergency.)
Copying another student's test or paper is never acceptable. It is called
cheating. At most schools in the U.S., students who cheat are expelled (kicked out).
Posters, bulletin boards, or any other thing hanging on the wall is considered
property of the school and shouldn't be written on or removed without permission. (A sign-up
sheet may be written on, but only put your name on it.)
It is not acceptable to put up any sign, announcement or advertisement without
first getting permission from the school office.
Books, backpacks, lunches, anything that belongs to other people is considered
private and should not be moved or tampered with.
Entering a teacher's office or any office with a closed door without knocking first
is not acceptable. Knock first, then wait to be invited in.
It is not considered polite to yell at people to get their attention. When talking in
a group, you should not speak so loudly as to disrupt others who are close by.
Wearing a hat or cap in class is considered impolite by many teachers. Some
teachers/programs may ignore it, but you should ask permission first.

EXTINCT AND ENDANGERED ANIMALS
Extinction of the species has always been a natural part of evolution. The
fossil records show that since life originated about four billion years ago, the vast majority of
species that have existed are now extinct. Those species outnumber living ones by a factor
of perhaps a thousand to one.
Scientists have identified five extinction events in Earth’s history, with some
so severe that more than 90 percent of all life forms were killed off. The last and most
famous extinction was the Cretaceous-Tertiary event at about 63 million years ago that
killed off the dinosaurs and allowed the rise of mammals. It is thought to have been caused
by an asteroid hitting Earth.
Today we are in the middle of a sixth extinction event that began about
50,000 years ago but is now accelerating in an alarming speed. This extinction event is not
a natural event, but is caused directly or indirectly by humans.
Most recent extinctions have been associated with European expansion in
the 15th and 16th century. However, in some parts of the world some species are known to
have become extinct before the arrival of the Europeans. For example, the Polynesians
who colonized the Hawaiian Island in the 4th, 5th and 6th centuries may have been
responsible for the loss of around 50 of the 100 or so species of endemic land birds in the
period between their arrival and that of the Europeans.

In 1973, the Radio Times asked BBC science presenter James Burke to

Forty years on, BBC News asked him to predict the future again. He paints a

poverty and scarcity have become things of the past.

Today a new chapter in space tourism was written. William Mark and his wife-to-be
Lisa Mills arrived safely to the moon to spend 5 days as the first guests at the Starbright Hotel that
was set up for this purpose two years ago.
Not are they only the first hotel guests on the moon, they also set a new record for
expensive accommodation since the price was US$ 3,7 million per night, per person. However,
the exclusive transfer from earth to the hotel was included in the price.
The hotel itself will probably have a tough time just to try to gain one star at any
hotel rating system, since there is no room service, the guests have to do the cleaning of the room
themselves and there is no bathroom in them. However, they have more stars than they need just
outside their window.
On August 24, Will and Lisa will get married through link by their local minister in
San Diego, California at 9.00pm EST tonight, and the wedding will be broadcasted live by several
major TV networks in a 1-hour special including the preparations for the trip.
They were accompanied by six other astronauts that during the stay will set up
further accommodations for the guests that have made reservations at the Starbright Hotel next
year. The hotel has so far no employees, only temporary staff when guests.
In twenty years’ time, adventurous holiday-maker will have run out of exciting things to do on
earth. They will have already been everywhere and tried everything. They’ll be looking for new
things to explore on the moon.
Besides Starbright Hotel, another Hotel chain is planning to build a hotel on the
moon, The Sky Walker Hotel. By the end of this year, the company will have finished its design for
the Lunar Palace Hotel. Soon after that, they will be starting the building work.
Organizations plan to put the first man on Mars by 2030, new trips to the moon will
take place around 2015-2020. That combined with the increasing interest in space tourism in the
next decade will open up to the possibility to make a reservation on the moon.

Think about some of the things you have done more lately – working, studying, or
relaxing:
• How much time do you spend working or studying?
• How much time do you spend relaxing?
• What do you do to relax?
• Have you ever read a self-help book? If so, which one(s)?
HOW RELAXED ARE YOU?
How well do you know your partner? Read the quiz below and try to guess your
partner’s answers, then ask each other and compare if you guessed right. Let’s find out
who’s the most relaxed person in the class?
1 A I start worrying about Monday on Saturday night.
B I easily forget work and relax on the weekend.
2 A I fidget all the time.
B I easily keep still.
The little book of calm is only 4 in. x 4 in. and it contains
only 1,000 words but has sold over 3 million copies and
has made its author into a multimillionaire.
3 A When I go to someone’s house, I sit on the edge of the seat for the
first hour.
B When I go to someone’s house, I sit back and relax right away.
4 A I fiddle with something all the time.
B I don’t need to have something in my hands.
5 A I bite my nails when I am anxious.
B I never bite my nails, or almost never.
6 A I worry all the time, I’m always thinking about my problems.
B If I have a problem, I deal with it. If I can’t do anything I don’t worry
about it.
7 A When I make an appointment, I start worrying that I’m going to forget
it.
B When I make an appointment, I write it down on my cellphone.
8 A I hate waiting in lines. I’m too impatient. If I can, I cut in.
B I wait in lines because it’s fair, while I’m waiting a read a book, or play
with my cellphone.
9 A I always lose my temper at least two or three times a week.
B I hardly ever lose my temper.
10 A I usually arrive at appointments too
early or too late.
B I usually arrive at appointments on time.
The more B answers someone has, the more relaxed he/she is.
Sally Sees Herself As She Really Is
I was under the impression that I was quite a relaxed person until I watched
the video of my sister’s wedding. As I watched myself, I realized that I am not the cool, calm,
sophisticated woman I thought I was. In fact I’m the opposite. I fidget, I talk non-stop, fiddle
with my hair, scratch my nose, wave my hands around like a lunatic, bite my nails, and I
never sit back on a seat, I sit on the edge of it, ready to jump up and go somewhere else.
So it was no surprise when a friend gave me The Little Book of Calm for my
last birthday.
I read the blurb on the back cover. ‘Feeling stressed?’ it asked. ‘Need some
help to regain the balance in your life? The Little Book of Calm is full of advice to follow and
thoughts to inspire. Open it at any page and you will find a path to inner peace.’
So I opened it at any page and read the advice: ‘Wear white.’ Wear white! I haven’t worn
white since my first child was born. This is not good advice for someone who has to deal
with young children and their dirty fingers every day.
I turned to another page. ‘Take a lesson in calmness from
children. Watch how children live every moment for the
pleasure of the moment.’ Do you know my children? When one
of them is screaming, ‘Aargh! He’s pulling my hair!’ and the
other is screaming, ‘She’s taken my sweets!’, the feeling I get
is not calmness.
‘Make an appointment with yourself to deal with worries at a
specific time in the future.’ Make an appointment! I’ve already
got too many appointments. I don’t need another appointment
to worry about.
‘Get up early and watch the sun rise.’ Well that’s nothing new. I
wake up at the crack of dawn every day, thanks to the children.
I haven’t had a lie-in for years.
‘For every ninety minutes of work, take a twenty-minute break.’
Yes, I like that. But there’s a problem. Who’s going to tell my
children ‘Don’t disturb Mummy now, she’s having a break.’?
‘Use a soft voice.’ With fighting children? I don’t think so. In
fact, my voice is getting louder every day. I decided to try once more. ‘Rediscover milk.’ No
problem. I love milk and I drink it all the time . . . with a shot of strong Italian espresso coffee
in it, of course.

Discuss the following questions:
• What is culture? What does it mean?
• Does culture influence in what we are? How?
• Do you agree with this saying “You are what you do?”
• How does it influence in our lives?
• How does the internet impact on our lives?
• Does it also impact on our culture and tastes?
• Do you agree with the people on the video and their opinion? Why?
• What have influenced you to be who you are today?
How does culture influence our lives?
Culture influences people’s lives in a myriad
of ways, including what they do, their perception of
education, their behaviors, their language, their accent,
what they read or what they do for entertainment. In
addition to that, culture has a huge impact on human lives,
regarding to what people wear, say or enjoy. Culture also
affects how the human brain responds to different situations.
Culture refers to the characteristics of a
particular group of people, for example food, social habits, religion, music and arts. It is
related to people’s way of life and style.
It is completely common when there are different groups of people, they
have their own ways of doing things. Nevertheless, through culture, people develop a
sense of belonging, personal growth and the capacity to empathize and associate with
others.
Is the Internet changing our lifestyle?
Nowadays, with the popularization of the network, the online life is not
just for those computer geeks. One of the most obvious advantage of the Internet is
resource sharing. Also, computers and networks are widely used by people all over
the world. More and more people are used to use the Internet to find resources. It
doesn’t matter what difficulties people find, the immediate reaction is always to ask
Google or Wikipedia . According to Michael Hart's opinion which was pointed out in
the book named A Brief History of the Internet, "for the first time we actually have the
opportunity for a whole world's population to share not only air or water, but also to
share the world of ideas, of art or of music and other sounds…anything that can be
digitilized” (Pg.10, Hart, Michael and Fuller, Maxwell , In 1995). That’s why some
people are concerned that the Internet is changing our minds. Are we heavily
influenced by the Internet ?
In fact, life online is unavoidable nowadays, mainly in our globalized
society. With the Internet we get access to real time updated information. For
instance, you can read the newest newspaper and books online for free instead of
buying a new one. This is very attractive to Netizen ('Netizen', which means net
citizen) ,especially for students. After all, times are changing, science and technology
are developing faster and faster, so it is necessary to keep up feeding our minds and
update ourselves with changes to come.
Disadvantages of the Internet
Every story has two sides, the Internet is no exception. Today, the
Internet is a widespread information medium of communication. Internet might be a
bitter-sweet tool, because not only brings convenience to mankind, but it also may
cause a great deal of potential problems too.
- How to deal with Internet crime?
- How to protect the netizens Internet security?
- How to correctly guide the young people to proper use the network ?
Many studies have concluded that young Internet users are
psychologically affected by spending too much time online.
Hence, technology brings new lifestyle to people, whereas how to
make the best use of it has become an urgent issue, if the internet is misused it might
undermine the quality of our lives and even threaten the mental health of young
students.
• Do you like reading?
• How often do you read a book?
• Do you think it’s important?
• How does it influence in our lives?
• Think about this saying: “We are what we read” do you agree with it?
• What was the last book you read?
• Where do you like reading?
Based on the text about the influence of internet on our lives, draw your own conclusions:

Now, let’s discuss about everybody’s points of view:
How do the books we read influence our lives?
When we are reading a book, we are feeding our brain. And this is how that
food nourishes us in whole:
1.It improves language: The books we read
create the language in which we converse. So
the better kind of books we read, the better and
more refined our thoughts and activities become.
Our communication becomes more clarified
as we are able to pick up the right word to
express ourselves.
2.Widens our mental horizons: Haven't we all
heard the adage that “the world of a man is as
big as his head”? When we read more books we
travel mentally. We explore places, vistas and
emotions through words that authors have put into fine print. We learn more about places,
individuals, customs, traditions, laws, and a lot more of characters. The more we read, the
more things we know. The more things we know, we try to achieve more out of life. It is a
fact that all great personalities at some point of time in their lives have drawn inspiration from
books.
3.Improves our character: Reading is like exercise for your brain. It makes you think
creatively. You draw up visuals and imagine scenes from lines of words written in a prose.
And most often, whether we like it or not, we compare ourselves to the characters in a book.
So be assured a good book with virtuous characters is going to turn you into a better person
sooner or later.
4.Converse with the author: Each time we read a book it is the author himself who is
speaking to us through his words. For a creative mind it might even be possible to imagine
the voice of the author whispering the lines from the books as we read along. Even years,
decades and centuries after their deaths they still continue to live and teach lessons of life
through their writings. Books are immortal. They survive the tests of time to enlighten our
minds.
5. Makes us feel good: Books are the source of knowledge. With knowledge comes
confidence. And so reading makes us feel more confident. We feel expertise in a subject
from continuous reading. It doesn't matter if you have read only novels or short stories. Your
grammar and vocabulary would have improved even without your knowledge.

How Does the Media Influence the Way People Behave?
The influence of media is growing stronger and stronger as time passes.
Because of this, the competition among producers and advertisers gets tougher as they
try to come up with new ways to catch people attention through their newspapers,
magazines, movies, shows, and commercials. If you have noticed, the speed at which
news travels around the world has become faster with the development and
advancement in technology. Everything is evolving depending on the demand of people.
Media indeed can influence people in different ways but the pressing question is this: how
does the media influence the way people behave?
Watching movies and programs on the television as we relax takes us
away into this different reality. There are parts in our being that feels we are the ones in
the movie and sometimes we even feel what they are feeling as we get caught in the
emotional excitement. The effect of media does not stop when the movie or program
ends. And this lingering effect might just be the cause of behavioral changes in people.
With action films, children tend to emulate the movie hero, engaging them
into violent acts thinking that it is acceptable because his hero became successful in the
end. With cartoon programs, not everything is good-natured. There are those that show
subtle acts of violence and deceitful acts against others (some even more vulgar). In
return, children tend to copy the characters and think that deceiving other people is a way
to confront their problems. They learn to transfer these ill behaviors to friends.
Check the bold words in the text and find the meaning:
1.tougher ( ) a feeling of eager enthusiasm
2.development ( ) pictures, photographs
3.excitement ( ) imitate the function
4.lingering ( ) harder, more complicated
5.behavioral ( ) a sequence of actions that keep repeating
6.emulate ( ) To fix an idea or belief firmly in someone's mind
7.deceiving ( ) kept in mind
8.attempt ( ) the domain ruled by a king or a queen
9.mislead ( ) short times between periods
10.instances ( ) guide someone in the wrong direction
11.sinful ( ) lasting a long time
12.realm ( ) an occurrence of something
13.embedded ( ) to act improperly
14.recesses ( ) to try to do something
15.inculcating ( ) change, growth, improvement
16.imageries ( ) having committed unrighteous acts
17.deemed ( ) manner of acting or reaction
18.misbehavior ( ) to be considered
19.vicious cycle ( ) be false to someone
There are some television shows and movies that attempt to create an
atmosphere to change the view of people towards social issues such as racial
discrimination. These shows provoke criticism and tend to mislead the picture of reality. In
the minds of other people, the effect can be for the better, but some unfortunately for the
worse.
There had been instances in the past that teens commit suicide imitating
her favorite actress. There was also a case where somebody set a subway ticket booth on
fire just like the way he saw it in his favorite film. These are just some examples of the
disturbing influence of media on people behavior.
An explanation to these sinful acts is that these people could not
distinguish fantasy from reality. They get caught up in the realm of what they had been
watching and the images and scenes get embedded in their minds. What makes these
people pull these images and scenes from the recesses of their minds and turn them into
reality is a psychological case.
So to answer the pressing question earlier, does the media influence the
way people behave? Yes, it does. If we analyze fully and look at things in a bigger picture,
the media is largely responsible for inculcating the minds of people with false notions and
morbid imageries. They feed the minds of innocent young people with violence and other
disturbing issues. They inform people on how to do acts that are deemed controversial to
the society.
These lead to misbehavior against other people, which can create a
vicious cycle among individuals as they attempt to do the same or even worse things to
others.

Some of the most important things we learn are not found in books.
(Shirley Zeiberg)
MOST OF WHAT I REALLY NEED TO KNOW about to live, and what to do,
and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school
mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school.
These are the things I learned. Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people.
Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don’t take things that
aren’t yours. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life. Learn some and
think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.
Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands
and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the plastic cup. The
roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all
like that.
Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the plastic
cup - they all die. So do we.
And then remember the book about Dick and Jane* and the first word you
learned, the biggest word of all: LOOK. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere.
The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and
sane living.
Think of what a better world it would be if we all – the whole world – had
cookies and milk about 3 o’clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankets for a
nap. Or if we had a basic policy in our nation and other nations to always put things back
where we found them and cleaned up our own messes. And it is still true, no matter how old
you are, when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.
*Dick and Jane are the main characters in popular basal readers written by William S. Gray and Zerna Sharp and published
by Scott Foresman, that were used to teach children to read from the 1930s through to the 1970s in the United States.

• What memories do you have about your childhood ?
• Write down the names of three people who are important to you: a friend, a best
friend and a relative:
• Do you have many friends?

• Do you believe in friendship between women and men?
• Do you have a pen pal?
Not just friends
By Bud E. Freund
Most of us have very few "best friends". These are friends who stand by us
through thick and thin. They are people who accept us completely (warts and all) who know our
most secret thoughts. But our lives crisscross with many others whose relationships with us may
be less deep but are still important. What would our lives be without these acquaintances,
buddies and dear old friends?
ACQUAINTANCES: These are people whose paths often cross ours. We attend
the same school committee meetings or share a car pool with them. Acquaintances may
exchange favors easily. The neighbor who borrows your chairs for a big party or the colleague
who waters your plants while you’re on vacation fit this category. But we usually don't get too
intimate with them. One woman commented: "Our next-door neighbor, who car pools with us, is
very nice. But we don't have anything in common. We never get together for anything but car
pool."
BUDDIES: A lot of people have a friend who shares a particular activity or
interest. These usually aren't close relationships, but they're important ones that keep us
connected to our interests and hobbies. Because they're based on activities rather than feelings
it’s relatively easy to make a new buddy. One foreign exchange student reported: "For the first
two months, I didn't have any real friend. My table-tennis partner, who’s from Beijing, was my
only social contact. We couldn't communicate in English very well but we had a good time
anyway. Without him, I would have been completely isolated."
OLD FRIENDS: "Delores knew me when I worked in the mailroom", "recalls an
advertising executive". I'Il never forget this day. The vice president who promoted me called me
for an interview. I didn't have the right clothes, and Delores was the one who came with me to
buy my first business suit. "We all have old friends who knew us "back when". They keep us in
touch with parts of ourselves which are easy to lose as we move through life.
“Whenever I go home, I always visit Delores", recalls the executive. "We look
through old albums and talk about experiences that have helped form us. She always reminds
me how shy I used to be. I agree with George Herbert, who said that the best mirror is an old
friend.
Match the words to the definition3
1. Shy ( ) a person that you have met but do not know well.
2. To fit ( ) every or any time.
3. Car pool ( ) to bring the memory of a past event into your mind, and
often to give a description of what you remember.
4. Crisscross ( ) You always support or stay with them, even if there
are problems or difficulties.
5. Remind ( ) to read something quickly.
6. Acquaintances ( ) describing or including all the bad qualities in a
person's character, with no attempt to hide them.
7. Warts and all ( ) nervous and uncomfortable with other people.
8. To look through ( ) to make someone think of something they
have forgotten or might have forgotten.
9. Whenever ( ) to be the right size or shape for someone or something.
10. Through thick and
thin
( ) to move or exist in a pattern of crossing lines.
11. To recall ( ) an arrangement in which
a group of people take turns driving each other
or their children to and from work or school.
Look the underlined words in the text and find what these words are
related to, then draw an arrow:
Look at the proverbs below and discuss with your partner the meaning
of them and if it’s possible try to find an equivalent in Portuguese:
1. "Books and friends should be few but good."
2. "A friend in need is a friend indeed."
3. "A good friend is my nearest relation."
4. "A hedge between keeps friendship green."
5. "God defend me from my friends; from my enemies I can defend myself."
6. "Love is blind; friendship closes its eyes."
7. "The best of friends must part."
8. "To have a friend, be a friend."
9. "The best mirror is an old friend."
10. "A cheerful friend is like a sunny day spreading brightness all around."
11. "The only unsinkable ship is FRIENDSHIP."
12. "It is better to be in chains with friends, than to be in a garden with strangers.”
“Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave and impossible to forget.”
Do you agree with this statement? Why? Talk to your partner:
• Have you ever shared a place with a friend?
• Did you have a close friend in college/school and drifted apart?
• What do you think is more important making money even if you don’t like what you’re
doing, or having personal satisfaction even not earning much?

I’ll always be there for you
Jack and Jill first met when they were studying at the same university,
they shared an apartment and lived together for five years. Four years later their lives
have changed a lot, even though, they have been friends since then. Read the text and
find out what happened to them:
Jill
I first met Jack when I was looking for someone to share an apartment I
was renting. I put an ad in the local student newspaper and he was interested in it. When
we met, we hit it off immediately and I asked him if he could move in straightaway.
I had a great time living with Jack. We soon found out that we had a lot in
common and quickly became close friends. We always discussed about everything that
was important to us at the time: politics, the environment, books, movies and other less
important things. We enjoyed the same music and that's important when you're sharing a
place. We fell out a couple of times about the housework chores. Jack thinks I’m untidy
but I think life's too short to worry about things like that.
When we graduated four years ago, we went our separate ways and
since then our lives have been very different. l went back to my home town and got a job
as a production assistant for art exhibitions. I like my job because I'm helping young
people to get involved in the arts. I still live with my parents because I'm not making
much money. Jack thinks I'm nuts because money is more important to him than
personal satisfaction, unlike me, I do give more importance to personal satisfaction and l
get a lot from my job. He's earning a lot of money, but he doesn't have quality time to
spend with his family and his friends. I hardly see him now. When he drops by for the
weekend we laugh a lot, but our lifestyles are so different now that we don't have very
much to talk about.
Jack
Jill and I got on very well together at university. When we first met, we
clicked straightaway and we ended up sharing a place for nearly four years. We had the
same attitude to the important things in life and the only thing we had some arguments
about was the housework. I’m very tidy whereas Jill's the opposite. I don't think she ever
found out where we kept the vacuum cleaner!
When l left university, I moved to New York and got a job in a finance
company. I have to work long hours and I don't really enjoy what I'm doing but I make
very good money. I'm very ambitious and I want to get to the top of my career. I enjoy
spending money on the latest cell phones, clothes, a nice car and going out to good
restaurants. Jill's working really hard as well, but she's not earning much. I don't
understand why she's doing it. I think she's just having a good time - it seems very
idealistic to me. Anyway, as our lifestyles are very different now, we've drifted apart. We

  • 6. • Have you ever heard about these tales? • Do you know any Brazilian popular tales? Try to explain in it. • Do you know any other tales? • Have you ever heard about a place called Transilvania? The Terrifying Truth About Dracula Vlad, or Dracula, was born in 1431 in Transylvania into a noble family. His father was called "Dracul," meaning "dragon" or "devil" in Romanian because he belonged to the Order of the Dragon, he had fought the Muslim Ottoman Empire. The name "Dracula" means "son of Dracul" in Romanian. Thus, young Vlad was "son of the dragon" or "son of the devil." At that moment, the legend Dracula the vampire was arising. Warrior in Chains Dracula had lived in a time of constant war. Transylvania was at the frontier of two great empires: the Ottoman Turks and the Austrian Hapsburgs. He was imprisoned, first by the Turks, who had ¹hauled him away in chains, and later by the Hungarians. Dracula's father was murdered, while his older brother, Mircea, was blinded with red-hot iron stakes and buried alive. Vlad the Impaler From 1448 until his death in 1476, Dracula had ruled Walachia and Transylvania, both part of Romania today. Twice he had lost and had reclaimed his throne, once by fighting his own brother, Radu. Although the Vatican once had 2praised him for defending Christianity, it disapproved of his methods, which soon became infamous. Dracula earned another nickname, "Vlad Tepes" (pronounced tsep- pesh), which means "Vlad the Impaler." Dracula's favorite method of torture was to 3impale people and leave them to 4writhe in agony, often for days. As a warning to others, the bodies would remain on rods as vultures and blackbirds nibbled the rotting flesh. During one battle, Dracula retreated into nearby mountains, impaling people as he went. The Turkish advance was 5halted because the sultan could not bear the stench from the 6decaying corpses. Another time, Some people had reported him to have eaten a meal on a table set up outside 7amidst hundreds of impaled victims. On another occasion he had been reported to have eaten bread dipped in blood. He was killed in December 1476 fighting the Turks near Bucharest, Romania. Dracula's head was cut off and displayed in Constantinople.

  • 18. American Classroom Customs If the teacher asks a question, you are expected to give an answer. If you don’t understand the question, you should raise your hand and ask the teacher to repeat the question. If you don’t know the answer, it is all right to tell the teacher that you do not know. Then he or she knows what you need to learn. There is no excuse for not doing your homework. If you are absent, you should call your teacher or someone who is in your class and ask for the assignment. It is your responsibility to find out what assignments you have missed. It is not the teacher's responsibility to remind you of missed assignments. You must not be absent on a test day. If you are seriously ill, call and let the teacher know you will not be there for the test. If your teacher allows make-up tests, you should take the test within one or two days after returning to class. Serious illness is the only reason for missing a test. Be on time! It is considered rude to be late. Also, it bothers other students. If you must come in late, be sure to do it quietly. Have your books and papers out of your bag before you come into the room. Then go to your seat and sit quietly. In the U.S. it is not necessary to knock before you enter the classroom. Most teachers will give you a low grade if you are often late. Have your book out and be ready to begin when class starts. Your teacher should not have to ask you every day to take out your book. Be sure you have a paper and a sharp pencil ready. If another student is answering a question, giving a report or an explanation, you should listen quietly and give them your attention. Everyone must be treated with the same respect you would like them to give to you. Also, the question they are asking may be something you need to know. It is considered impolite in the U.S. to eat, drink or chew gum during class. This is reserved for the break. Also, removing one's shoes in the classroom is not polite. Zero Conditional • Situations that are always true if something happens. • Used to speak about facts, habits or actions that always have the same outcome. If (present simple clause), (present simple clause) Ex.: If I am late, my father takes me to school. If the banana is yellow, it’s ready to be eaten!’ * Note: For the zero conditional, we can use ‘when’ instead of ‘if’.
  • 19. Talk to your partner, then report to the class the Brazilian Classroom Customs. Discuss the differences. Which customs are best in your opinion? Now read the text again and identify the zero conditional cases on the text. Answer These Questions 1. However, leaving the class for something other than an emergency is not acceptable. (Getting a drink or sharpening your pencil is not considered an emergency.) Copying another student's test or paper is never acceptable. It is called cheating. At most schools in the U.S., students who cheat are expelled (kicked out). Posters, bulletin boards, or any other thing hanging on the wall is considered property of the school and shouldn't be written on or removed without permission. (A sign-up sheet may be written on, but only put your name on it.) It is not acceptable to put up any sign, announcement or advertisement without first getting permission from the school office. Books, backpacks, lunches, anything that belongs to other people is considered private and should not be moved or tampered with. Entering a teacher's office or any office with a closed door without knocking first is not acceptable. Knock first, then wait to be invited in. It is not considered polite to yell at people to get their attention. When talking in a group, you should not speak so loudly as to disrupt others who are close by. Wearing a hat or cap in class is considered impolite by many teachers. Some teachers/programs may ignore it, but you should ask permission first. Why?. • How can you help this cause in the future? EXTINCT AND ENDANGERED ANIMALS Extinction of the species has always been a natural part of evolution. The fossil records show that since life originated about four billion years ago, the vast majority of species that have existed are now extinct. Those species outnumber living ones by a factor of perhaps a thousand to one. Scientists have identified five extinction events in Earth’s history, with some so severe that more than 90 percent of all life forms were killed off. The last and most famous extinction was the Cretaceous-Tertiary event at about 63 million years ago that killed off the dinosaurs and allowed the rise of mammals. It is thought to have been caused by an asteroid hitting Earth. Today we are in the middle of a sixth extinction event that began about 50,000 years ago but is now accelerating in an alarming speed. This extinction event is not a natural event, but is caused directly or indirectly by humans. Most recent extinctions have been associated with European expansion in the 15th and 16th century. However, in some parts of the world some species are known to have become extinct before the arrival of the Europeans. For example, the Polynesians who colonized the Hawaiian Island in the 4th, 5th and 6th centuries may have been responsible for the loss of around 50 of the 100 or so species of endemic land birds in the period between their arrival and that of the Europeans. www.animalport.com

  • 30. August 23, 2025 Today a new chapter in space tourism was written. William Mark and his wife-to-be Lisa Mills arrived safely to the moon to spend 5 days as the first guests at the Starbright Hotel that was set up for this purpose two years ago. Not are they only the first hotel guests on the moon, they also set a new record for expensive accommodation since the price was US$ 3,7 million per night, per person. However, the exclusive transfer from earth to the hotel was included in the price. The hotel itself will probably have a tough time just to try to gain one star at any hotel rating system, since there is no room service, the guests have to do the cleaning of the room themselves and there is no bathroom in them. However, they have more stars than they need just outside their window. On August 24, Will and Lisa will get married through link by their local minister in San Diego, California at 9.00pm EST tonight, and the wedding will be broadcasted live by several major TV networks in a 1-hour special including the preparations for the trip. They were accompanied by six other astronauts that during the stay will set up further accommodations for the guests that have made reservations at the Starbright Hotel next year. The hotel has so far no employees, only temporary staff when guests. In twenty years’ time, adventurous holiday-maker will have run out of exciting things to do on earth. They will have already been everywhere and tried everything. They’ll be looking for new things to explore on the moon. Besides Starbright Hotel, another Hotel chain is planning to build a hotel on the moon, The Sky Walker Hotel. By the end of this year, the company will have finished its design for the Lunar Palace Hotel. Soon after that, they will be starting the building work. Organizations plan to put the first man on Mars by 2030, new trips to the moon will take place around 2015-2020. That combined with the increasing interest in space tourism in the next decade will open up to the possibility to make a reservation on the moon. <http://www.newsoffuture.com/first_hotel_on_the_moon_space_tourism.html;> Adapted

  • 34. Sally Sees Herself As She Really Is I was under the impression that I was quite a relaxed person until I watched the video of my sister’s wedding. As I watched myself, I realized that I am not the cool, calm, sophisticated woman I thought I was. In fact I’m the opposite. I fidget, I talk non-stop, fiddle with my hair, scratch my nose, wave my hands around like a lunatic, bite my nails, and I never sit back on a seat, I sit on the edge of it, ready to jump up and go somewhere else. So it was no surprise when a friend gave me The Little Book of Calm for my last birthday. I read the blurb on the back cover. ‘Feeling stressed?’ it asked. ‘Need some help to regain the balance in your life? The Little Book of Calm is full of advice to follow and thoughts to inspire. Open it at any page and you will find a path to inner peace.’ So I opened it at any page and read the advice: ‘Wear white.’ Wear white! I haven’t worn white since my first child was born. This is not good advice for someone who has to deal with young children and their dirty fingers every day. I turned to another page. ‘Take a lesson in calmness from children. Watch how children live every moment for the pleasure of the moment.’ Do you know my children? When one of them is screaming, ‘Aargh! He’s pulling my hair!’ and the other is screaming, ‘She’s taken my sweets!’, the feeling I get is not calmness. ‘Make an appointment with yourself to deal with worries at a specific time in the future.’ Make an appointment! I’ve already got too many appointments. I don’t need another appointment to worry about. ‘Get up early and watch the sun rise.’ Well that’s nothing new. I wake up at the crack of dawn every day, thanks to the children. I haven’t had a lie-in for years. ‘For every ninety minutes of work, take a twenty-minute break.’ Yes, I like that. But there’s a problem. Who’s going to tell my children ‘Don’t disturb Mummy now, she’s having a break.’? ‘Use a soft voice.’ With fighting children? I don’t think so. In fact, my voice is getting louder every day. I decided to try once more. ‘Rediscover milk.’ No problem. I love milk and I drink it all the time . . . with a shot of strong Italian espresso coffee in it, of course. • 46. Is the Internet changing our lifestyle? Nowadays, with the popularization of the network, the online life is not just for those computer geeks. One of the most obvious advantage of the Internet is resource sharing. Also, computers and networks are widely used by people all over the world. More and more people are used to use the Internet to find resources. It doesn’t matter what difficulties people find, the immediate reaction is always to ask Google or Wikipedia . According to Michael Hart's opinion which was pointed out in the book named A Brief History of the Internet, "for the first time we actually have the opportunity for a whole world's population to share not only air or water, but also to share the world of ideas, of art or of music and other sounds…anything that can be digitilized” (Pg.10, Hart, Michael and Fuller, Maxwell , In 1995). That’s why some people are concerned that the Internet is changing our minds. Are we heavily influenced by the Internet ? In fact, life online is unavoidable nowadays, mainly in our globalized society. With the Internet we get access to real time updated information. For instance, you can read the newest newspaper and books online for free instead of buying a new one. This is very attractive to Netizen ('Netizen', which means net citizen) ,especially for students. After all, times are changing, science and technology are developing faster and faster, so it is necessary to keep up feeding our minds and update ourselves with changes to come. Disadvantages of the Internet Every story has two sides, the Internet is no exception. Today, the Internet is a widespread information medium of communication. Internet might be a bitter-sweet tool, because not only brings convenience to mankind, but it also may cause a great deal of potential problems too. - How to deal with Internet crime? - How to protect the netizens Internet security? - How to correctly guide the young people to proper use the network ? Many studies have concluded that young Internet users are psychologically affected by spending too much time online. Hence, technology brings new lifestyle to people, whereas how to make the best use of it has become an urgent issue, if the internet is misused it might undermine the quality of our lives and even threaten the mental health of young students.
  • 47. • Do you like reading? • How often do you read a book? • Do you think it’s important? • How does it influence in our lives? • Think about this saying: “We are what we read” do you agree with it? • What was the last book you read? • Where do you like reading? Based on the text about the influence of internet on our lives, draw your own conclusions: ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Now, let’s discuss about everybody’s points of view:
  • 48. How do the books we read influence our lives? When we are reading a book, we are feeding our brain. And this is how that food nourishes us in whole: 1.It improves language: The books we read create the language in which we converse. So the better kind of books we read, the better and more refined our thoughts and activities become. Our communication becomes more clarified as we are able to pick up the right word to express ourselves. 2.Widens our mental horizons: Haven't we all heard the adage that “the world of a man is as big as his head”? When we read more books we travel mentally. We explore places, vistas and emotions through words that authors have put into fine print. We learn more about places, individuals, customs, traditions, laws, and a lot more of characters. The more we read, the more things we know. The more things we know, we try to achieve more out of life. It is a fact that all great personalities at some point of time in their lives have drawn inspiration from books. 3.Improves our character: Reading is like exercise for your brain. It makes you think creatively. You draw up visuals and imagine scenes from lines of words written in a prose. And most often, whether we like it or not, we compare ourselves to the characters in a book. So be assured a good book with virtuous characters is going to turn you into a better person sooner or later. 4.Converse with the author: Each time we read a book it is the author himself who is speaking to us through his words. For a creative mind it might even be possible to imagine the voice of the author whispering the lines from the books as we read along. Even years, decades and centuries after their deaths they still continue to live and teach lessons of life through their writings. Books are immortal. They survive the tests of time to enlighten our minds. 5. Makes us feel good: Books are the source of knowledge. With knowledge comes confidence. And so reading makes us feel more confident. We feel expertise in a subject from continuous reading. It doesn't matter if you have read only novels or short stories. Your grammar and vocabulary would have improved even without your knowledge. https://www.quora.com/How-do-the-books-we-read-influence-our-lives
  • 49. Look at the pictures below and discuss with your friend about them. What do you think they mean? Do you agree with them? Why? 1 How Does the Media Influence the Way People Behave? The influence of media is growing stronger and stronger as time passes. Because of this, the competition among producers and advertisers gets tougher as they try to come up with new ways to catch people attention through their newspapers, magazines, movies, shows, and commercials. If you have noticed, the speed at which news travels around the world has become faster with the development and advancement in technology. Everything is evolving depending on the demand of people. Media indeed can influence people in different ways but the pressing question is this: how does the media influence the way people behave? Watching movies and programs on the television as we relax takes us away into this different reality. There are parts in our being that feels we are the ones in the movie and sometimes we even feel what they are feeling as we get caught in the emotional excitement. The effect of media does not stop when the movie or program ends. And this lingering effect might just be the cause of behavioral changes in people. With action films, children tend to emulate the movie hero, engaging them into violent acts thinking that it is acceptable because his hero became successful in the end. With cartoon programs, not everything is good-natured. There are those that show subtle acts of violence and deceitful acts against others (some even more vulgar). In return, children tend to copy the characters and think that deceiving other people is a way to confront their problems. They learn to transfer these ill behaviors to friends.

These shows provoke criticism and tend to mislead the picture of reality. In the minds of other people, the effect can be for the better, but some unfortunately for the worse. There had been instances in the past that teens commit suicide imitating her favorite actress. There was also a case where somebody set a subway ticket booth on fire just like the way he saw it in his favorite film. These are just some examples of the disturbing influence of media on people behavior. An explanation to these sinful acts is that these people could not distinguish fantasy from reality. They get caught up in the realm of what they had been watching and the images and scenes get embedded in their minds. What makes these people pull these images and scenes from the recesses of their minds and turn them into reality is a psychological case. So to answer the pressing question earlier, does the media influence the way people behave? Yes, it does. If we analyze fully and look at things in a bigger picture, the media is largely responsible for inculcating the minds of people with false notions and morbid imageries. They feed the minds of innocent young people with violence and other disturbing issues. They inform people on how to do acts that are deemed controversial to the society. These lead to misbehavior against other people, which can create a vicious cycle among individuals as they attempt to do the same or even worse things to others. http://influence.bafree.net/how-does-the-media-influence-the-way-people-behave.php 2

  • 57. Read the text again and find the meaning of the underlined phrasal verbs: _____________________________ _____________________________ _____________________________ _____________________________ _____________________________ _____________________________ Write down some sentences from the text that you consider important to be learned in kindergarten: _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________ Some of the most important things we learn are not found in books. (Shirley Zeiberg) MOST OF WHAT I REALLY NEED TO KNOW about to live, and what to do, and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school. These are the things I learned. Share everything. Play fair. Don’t hit people. Put things back where you found them. Clean up your own mess. Don’t take things that aren’t yours. Say you’re sorry when you hurt somebody. Wash your hands before you eat. Flush. Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you. Live a balanced life. Learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some. Take a nap every afternoon. When you go out into the world, watch for traffic, hold hands and stick together. Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the plastic cup. The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the plastic cup - they all die. So do we. And then remember the book about Dick and Jane* and the first word you learned, the biggest word of all: LOOK. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and sane living. Think of what a better world it would be if we all – the whole world – had cookies and milk about 3 o’clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankets for a nap. Or if we had a basic policy in our nation and other nations to always put things back where we found them and cleaned up our own messes. And it is still true, no matter how old you are, when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together. *Dick and Jane are the main characters in popular basal readers written by William S. Gray and Zerna Sharp and published by Scott Foresman, that were used to teach children to read from the 1930s through to the 1970s in the United States. 1 2
  • 58. • What memories do you have about your childhood ? • Write down the names of three people who are important to you: a friend, a best friend and a relative: • Do you have many friends? • How often do you see them? • Do you still have friends from your childhood? • Do you have a BFF, what’s his/her name? • Do you believe in friendship between women and men? • Do you have a pen pal? Not just friends By Bud E. Freund Most of us have very few "best friends". These are friends who stand by us through thick and thin. They are people who accept us completely (warts and all) who know our most secret thoughts. But our lives crisscross with many others whose relationships with us may be less deep but are still important. What would our lives be without these acquaintances, buddies and dear old friends? ACQUAINTANCES: These are people whose paths often cross ours. We attend the same school committee meetings or share a car pool with them. Acquaintances may exchange favors easily. The neighbor who borrows your chairs for a big party or the colleague who waters your plants while you’re on vacation fit this category. But we usually don't get too intimate with them. One woman commented: "Our next-door neighbor, who car pools with us, is very nice. But we don't have anything in common. We never get together for anything but car pool." BUDDIES: A lot of people have a friend who shares a particular activity or interest. These usually aren't close relationships, but they're important ones that keep us connected to our interests and hobbies. Because they're based on activities rather than feelings it’s relatively easy to make a new buddy. One foreign exchange student reported: "For the first two months, I didn't have any real friend. My table-tennis partner, who’s from Beijing, was my only social contact. We couldn't communicate in English very well but we had a good time anyway. Without him, I would have been completely isolated." OLD FRIENDS: "Delores knew me when I worked in the mailroom", "recalls an advertising executive". I'Il never forget this day. The vice president who promoted me called me for an interview. I didn't have the right clothes, and Delores was the one who came with me to buy my first business suit. "We all have old friends who knew us "back when". They keep us in touch with parts of ourselves which are easy to lose as we move through life. “Whenever I go home, I always visit Delores", recalls the executive. "We look through old albums and talk about experiences that have helped form us. She always reminds me how shy I used to be. I agree with George Herbert, who said that the best mirror is an old friend.

  • 61. I’ll always be there for you Jack and Jill first met when they were studying at the same university, they shared an apartment and lived together for five years. Four years later their lives have changed a lot, even though, they have been friends since then. Read the text and find out what happened to them: Jill I first met Jack when I was looking for someone to share an apartment I was renting. I put an ad in the local student newspaper and he was interested in it. When we met, we hit it off immediately and I asked him if he could move in straightaway. I had a great time living with Jack. We soon found out that we had a lot in common and quickly became close friends. We always discussed about everything that was important to us at the time: politics, the environment, books, movies and other less important things. We enjoyed the same music and that's important when you're sharing a place. We fell out a couple of times about the housework chores. Jack thinks I’m untidy but I think life's too short to worry about things like that. When we graduated four years ago, we went our separate ways and since then our lives have been very different. l went back to my home town and got a job as a production assistant for art exhibitions. I like my job because I'm helping young people to get involved in the arts. I still live with my parents because I'm not making much money. Jack thinks I'm nuts because money is more important to him than personal satisfaction, unlike me, I do give more importance to personal satisfaction and l get a lot from my job. He's earning a lot of money, but he doesn't have quality time to spend with his family and his friends. I hardly see him now. When he drops by for the weekend we laugh a lot, but our lifestyles are so different now that we don't have very much to talk about. Jack Jill and I got on very well together at university. When we first met, we clicked straightaway and we ended up sharing a place for nearly four years. We had the same attitude to the important things in life and the only thing we had some arguments about was the housework. I’m very tidy whereas Jill's the opposite. I don't think she ever found out where we kept the vacuum cleaner! When l left university, I moved to New York and got a job in a finance company. I have to work long hours and I don't really enjoy what I'm doing but I make very good money. I'm very ambitious and I want to get to the top of my career. I enjoy spending money on the latest cell phones, clothes, a nice car and going out to good restaurants. Jill's working really hard as well, but she's not earning much. I don't understand why she's doing it. I think she's just having a good time - it seems very idealistic to me. Anyway, as our lifestyles are very different now, we've drifted apart. We haven't fallen out or anything. We still keep in touch and when l go down to see her, we have a wonderful time and laugh a lot. l know she'll always be there for me.
