The Terrifying Truth About Dracula
Vlad, or Dracula, was born in 1431 in Transylvania
into a noble family. His father was called "Dracul," meaning "dragon"
or "devil" in Romanian because he belonged to the Order of the
Dragon, he had fought the Muslim Ottoman Empire.
The name "Dracula" means "son of Dracul" in Romanian.
Thus, young Vlad was "son of the dragon" or "son of the devil."
At that moment, the legend Dracula the vampire was arising.
Warrior in Chains
Dracula had lived in a time of constant war. Transylvania was at the
frontier of two great empires: the Ottoman Turks and the Austrian Hapsburgs.
He was imprisoned, first by the Turks, who had ¹hauled him away in
chains, and later by the Hungarians. Dracula's father was murdered, while his older
brother, Mircea, was blinded with red-hot iron stakes and buried alive.
Vlad the Impaler
From 1448 until his death in 1476, Dracula had ruled Walachia and
Transylvania, both part of Romania today. Twice he had lost and had reclaimed his
throne, once by fighting his own brother, Radu. Although the Vatican once had
2praised him for defending Christianity, it disapproved of his methods, which soon
became infamous.
Dracula earned another nickname, "Vlad Tepes" (pronounced tsep-
pesh), which means "Vlad the Impaler." Dracula's favorite method of torture was to
3impale people and leave them to 4writhe in agony, often for days. As a warning to
others, the bodies would remain on rods as vultures and blackbirds nibbled the rotting
flesh.
During one battle, Dracula retreated into nearby mountains, impaling
people as he went. The Turkish advance was 5halted because the sultan could not
bear the stench from the 6decaying corpses.
Another time, Some people had reported him to have eaten a meal on a
table set up outside 7amidst hundreds of impaled victims. On another occasion he had
been reported to have eaten bread dipped in blood.
He was killed in December 1476 fighting the Turks near Bucharest,
Romania. Dracula's head was cut off and displayed in Constantinople.

The Nice lady
It was close to midnight when Donald and Elizabeth had been driving
home before they stopped. They had been driving down a dirt road when they heard a
strange noise. Donald stopped the car. He got out of the car. Then, he saw a lady

lady had disappeared.
Donald looked at the car. It had been going for an hour or so. He knew

Exchange students are usually students in high school or post-
secondary systems of education who leave their home countries to spend anywhere
between a few weeks and an entire year within a foreign country. During this time,
most must attempt to learn a new language and thus experience the culture through
the means of direct application

• An internship program
An internship is a temporary job with an emphasis on the job training
rather than merely employment, and it can be paid or unpaid. You also excel for
getting fluency in other language.
• Au Pair Program
Au Pair child care is a unique opportunity to provide a family with full-
time, live-in child care through a life-changing cultural exchange experience.
As a pre-screened international young adult from the country that the
family chooses, the Au Pair is a qualified care provider that they handpick to come and
live with another family for up to two years. He or she becomes an extended member
of the family and is personally invested in the happiness, well-being and success of
the children.

Most of exchange students live in houses of one or more host families

American Classroom Customs
If the teacher asks a question, you are expected to give an answer. If you don’t
understand the question, you should raise your hand and ask the teacher to repeat the
question. If you don’t know the answer, it is all right to tell the teacher that you do not know.
Then he or she knows what you need to learn.
There is no excuse for not doing your homework. If you are absent, you should
call your teacher or someone who is in your class and ask for the assignment. It is your
responsibility to find out what assignments you have missed. It is not the teacher's
responsibility to remind you of missed assignments.
You must not be absent on a test day. If you are seriously ill, call and let the
teacher know you will not be there for the test. If your teacher allows make-up tests, you should
take the test within one or two days after returning to class. Serious illness is the only reason
for missing a test.
Be on time! It is considered rude to be late. Also, it bothers other students. If you
must come in late, be sure to do it quietly. Have your books and papers out of your bag before
you come into the room. Then go to your seat and sit quietly. In the U.S. it is not necessary to
knock before you enter the classroom. Most teachers will give you a low grade if you are often
late.
Have your book out and be ready to begin when class starts. Your teacher
should not have to ask you every day to take out your book. Be sure you have a paper and a
sharp pencil ready.
In America, you should call your teacher by his or her last name, not "teacher".
Also you should use Mr., Miss, Ms. or Mrs. before the last name (such as Mrs. Smith or Mr.
Jones). This is considered polite. The teacher will tell you his or her preferred title.
Be courteous to other students. If another student is answering a question,
giving a report or an explanation, you should listen quietly and give them your attention.
Everyone must be treated with the same respect you would like them to give to you. Also, the
question they are asking may be something you need to know.
It is considered impolite in the U.S. to eat, drink or chew gum during class. This
is reserved for the break. Also, removing one's shoes in the classroom is not polite.

a group, you should not speak so loudly as to disrupt others who are close by.
Wearing a hat or cap in class is considered impolite by many teachers. Some
teachers/programs may ignore it, but you should ask permission first.

EXTINCT AND ENDANGERED ANIMALS
Extinction of the species has always been a natural part of evolution. The
fossil records show that since life originated about four billion years ago, the vast majority of
species that have existed are now extinct. Those species outnumber living ones by a factor
of perhaps a thousand to one.
Scientists have identified five extinction events in Earth’s history, with some
so severe that more than 90 percent of all life forms were killed off. The last and most
famous extinction was the Cretaceous-Tertiary event at about 63 million years ago that
killed off the dinosaurs and allowed the rise of mammals. It is thought to have been caused
by an asteroid hitting Earth.
Today we are in the middle of a sixth extinction event that began about
50,000 years ago but is now accelerating in an alarming speed. This extinction event is not
a natural event, but is caused directly or indirectly by humans.
Most recent extinctions have been associated with European expansion in
the 15th and 16th century. However, in some parts of the world some species are known to
have become extinct before the arrival of the Europeans. For example, the Polynesians
who colonized the Hawaiian Island in the 4th, 5th and 6th centuries may have been
responsible for the loss of around 50 of the 100 or so species of endemic land birds in the
period between their arrival and that of the Europeans.

Today a new chapter in space tourism was written. William Mark and his wife-to-be
Lisa Mills arrived safely to the moon to spend 5 days as the first guests at the Starbright Hotel that
was set up for this purpose two years ago.
Not are they only the first hotel guests on the moon, they also set a new record for
expensive accommodation since the price was US$ 3,7 million per night, per person. However,
the exclusive transfer from earth to the hotel was included in the price.
The hotel itself will probably have a tough time just to try to gain one star at any
hotel rating system, since there is no room service, the guests have to do the cleaning of the room
themselves and there is no bathroom in them. However, they have more stars than they need just
outside their window.
On August 24, Will and Lisa will get married through link by their local minister in
San Diego, California at 9.00pm EST tonight, and the wedding will be broadcasted live by several
major TV networks in a 1-hour special including the preparations for the trip.
They were accompanied by six other astronauts that during the stay will set up
further accommodations for the guests that have made reservations at the Starbright Hotel next
year. The hotel has so far no employees, only temporary staff when guests.
In twenty years’ time, adventurous holiday-maker will have run out of exciting things to do on
earth. They will have already been everywhere and tried everything. They’ll be looking for new
things to explore on the moon.
Besides Starbright Hotel, another Hotel chain is planning to build a hotel on the
moon, The Sky Walker Hotel. By the end of this year, the company will have finished its design for
the Lunar Palace Hotel. Soon after that, they will be starting the building work.
Organizations plan to put the first man on Mars by 2030, new trips to the moon will
take place around 2015-2020. That combined with the increasing interest in space tourism in the
next decade will open up to the possibility to make a reservation on the moon.

Sally Sees Herself As She Really Is
I was under the impression that I was quite a relaxed person until I watched
the video of my sister’s wedding. As I watched myself, I realized that I am not the cool, calm,
sophisticated woman I thought I was. In fact I’m the opposite. I fidget, I talk non-stop, fiddle
with my hair, scratch my nose, wave my hands around like a lunatic, bite my nails, and I
never sit back on a seat, I sit on the edge of it, ready to jump up and go somewhere else.
So it was no surprise when a friend gave me The Little Book of Calm for my
last birthday.
I read the blurb on the back cover. ‘Feeling stressed?’ it asked. ‘Need some
help to regain the balance in your life? The Little Book of Calm is full of advice to follow and
thoughts to inspire. Open it at any page and you will find a path to inner peace.’
So I opened it at any page and read the advice: ‘Wear white.’ Wear white! I haven’t worn
white since my first child was born. This is not good advice for someone who has to deal
with young children and their dirty fingers every day.
I turned to another page. ‘Take a lesson in calmness from
children. Watch how children live every moment for the
pleasure of the moment.’ Do you know my children? When one
of them is screaming, ‘Aargh! He’s pulling my hair!’ and the
other is screaming, ‘She’s taken my sweets!’, the feeling I get
is not calmness.
‘Make an appointment with yourself to deal with worries at a
specific time in the future.’ Make an appointment! I’ve already
got too many appointments. I don’t need another appointment
to worry about.
‘Get up early and watch the sun rise.’ Well that’s nothing new. I
wake up at the crack of dawn every day, thanks to the children.
I haven’t had a lie-in for years.
‘For every ninety minutes of work, take a twenty-minute break.’
Yes, I like that. But there’s a problem. Who’s going to tell my
children ‘Don’t disturb Mummy now, she’s having a break.’?
‘Use a soft voice.’ With fighting children? I don’t think so. In
fact, my voice is getting louder every day. I decided to try once more. ‘Rediscover milk.’ No
problem. I love milk and I drink it all the time . . . with a shot of strong Italian espresso coffee
in it, of course.

The influence of media is growing stronger and stronger as time passes.
Because of this, the competition among producers and advertisers gets tougher as they

Watching movies and programs on the television as we relax takes us
away into this different reality. There are parts in our being that feels we are the ones in
the movie and sometimes we even feel what they are feeling as we get caught in the
emotional excitement. The effect of media does not stop when the movie or program
ends. And this lingering effect might just be the cause of behavioral changes in people.
With action films, children tend to emulate the movie hero, engaging them
into violent acts thinking that it is acceptable because his hero became successful in the
end. With cartoon programs, not everything is good-natured. There are those that show
subtle acts of violence and deceitful acts against others (some even more vulgar). In
return, children tend to copy the characters and think that deceiving other people is a way
to confront their problems. They learn to transfer these ill behaviors to friends.

There are some television shows and movies that attempt to create an
atmosphere to change the view of people towards social issues such as racial
discrimination. These shows provoke criticism and tend to mislead the picture of reality. In
the minds of other people, the effect can be for the better, but some unfortunately for the
worse.
There had been instances in the past that teens commit suicide imitating
her favorite actress. There was also a case where somebody set a subway ticket booth on
fire just like the way he saw it in his favorite film. These are just some examples of the
disturbing influence of media on people behavior.
An explanation to these sinful acts is that these people could not
distinguish fantasy from reality. They get caught up in the realm of what they had been
watching and the images and scenes get embedded in their minds. What makes these
people pull these images and scenes from the recesses of their minds and turn them into
reality is a psychological case.
So to answer the pressing question earlier, does the media influence the
way people behave? Yes, it does. If we analyze fully and look at things in a bigger picture,
the media is largely responsible for inculcating the minds of people with false notions and
morbid imageries. They feed the minds of innocent young people with violence and other
disturbing issues. They inform people on how to do acts that are deemed controversial to
the society.
These lead to misbehavior against other people, which can create a
vicious cycle among individuals as they attempt to do the same or even worse things to
others.

MOST OF WHAT I REALLY NEED TO KNOW about to live, and what to do,
and how to be, I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school
mountain, but there in the sandbox at nursery school.

Most of us have very few "best friends". These are friends who stand by us
through thick and thin. They are people who accept us completely (warts and all) who know our
most secret thoughts. But our lives crisscross with many others whose relationships with us may
be less deep but are still important. What would our lives be without these acquaintances,
buddies and dear old friends?
ACQUAINTANCES: These are people whose paths often cross ours. We attend
the same school committee meetings or share a car pool with them. Acquaintances may
exchange favors easily. The neighbor who borrows your chairs for a big party or the colleague
who waters your plants while you’re on vacation fit this category. But we usually don't get too
intimate with them. One woman commented: "Our next-door neighbor, who car pools with us, is
very nice. But we don't have anything in common. We never get together for anything but car
pool."
BUDDIES: A lot of people have a friend who shares a particular activity or
interest. These usually aren't close relationships, but they're important ones that keep us
connected to our interests and hobbies. Because they're based on activities rather than feelings
it’s relatively easy to make a new buddy. One foreign exchange student reported: "For the first
two months, I didn't have any real friend. My table-tennis partner, who’s from Beijing, was my
only social contact. We couldn't communicate in English very well but we had a good time

Jack and Jill first met when they were studying at the same university,
they shared an apartment and lived together for five years. Four years later their lives
have changed a lot, even though, they have been friends since then. Read the text and

I first met Jack when I was looking for someone to share an apartment I
was renting. I put an ad in the local student newspaper and he was interested in it. When

since then our lives have been very different. l went back to my home town and got a job
as a production assistant for art exhibitions. I like my job because I'm helping young
people to get involved in the arts. I still live with my parents because I'm not making
much money. Jack thinks I'm nuts because money is more important to him than
personal satisfaction, unlike me, I do give more importance to personal satisfaction and l
get a lot from my job. He's earning a lot of money, but he doesn't have quality time to
spend with his family and his friends. I hardly see him now. When he drops by for the
weekend we laugh a lot, but our lifestyles are so different now that we don't have very
much to talk about.

Jill and I got on very well together at university. When we first met, we
clicked straightaway and we ended up sharing a place for nearly four years. We had the
same attitude to the important things in life and the only thing we had some arguments

have a wonderful time and laugh a lot. l know she'll always be there for me.
