reached a southern land that was new to them.
For the Europeans, the initial discovery of the
east coast of New Zealand was cause for
celebration. For the Maori people it was a time
of astonishment and fear.
● On 8th October the Endeavour sailed into a
bay, and laid anchor at the entrance of a small
river in Tuuranga-nui (today's Poverty Bay, near

this bay "Young Nick's Head" after Nicholas
Young.

voyages?
Sea creatures make voyages because:
● Their part of the sea/ocean was being used by
humans.
● Their part of the sea/ocean was being polluted with
rubbish like cans, chip bags, plastic and oil.
● They have to migrate because the water is either too
cold or too warm.
6. Why is the people important to NZ?
● The edge of the sea is also important for
people. People came to New Zealand on boats.
To get on and off the boats, they neeedd places
where the coast was protected from waves and
deep near the shore. These places are called
harbours. All of New Zealand's cities were built
where they are because of the harbours.
