Homeless Coalition of Jacksonville (ESHC)
annual census and survey which measure the
number and needs of homeless individuals in
Duval County conducted on January 12,
2012:
Demographic Characteristics of homeless:
69.7 percent of homeless were male
Mean age was 40 years
Six percent were Hispanic / Latino

Total counted: 2,861 adults and children homeless in Jacksonville
Duval County: 2,533
Beaches: 72
Clay County: 244
Nassau County: 84
This is a 31.4 percent decrease from the previous point-in-time count
Education and Employment of homeless:
Almost two-thirds (61.3 percent) of the survey participants had a high
school diploma/equivalency or higher
Ten percent of the survey respondents were employed

Other Life Experiences
Fourteen percent of the homeless individuals had served in the US
military
One out of ten of the United Way and survey participants had
been in foster care
One-fifth of the United Way and survey participants identified
themselves as a survivor or victim of domestic violence
Health
Over half (56.4 percent) of the United Way and survey
participants claimed to have at least one disabling condition
Over half (56.1 percent) of the survey participants believed they
were at least in “good” health
Assessment of Needs
Top 3 needs identified:
Housing/Shelter – 70.6 percent
Job – 45.4 percent
Medical – 33.7 percent
Food/Meals – 29.1 percent
