5. Project Planning CMMI
• Planning includes estimating the attributes of
work products and tasks,
• determining the resources needed,
• producing a schedule, and identifying and
analyzing project risks

Characteristics
The main purpose of project plane is to , the basis for performing and controlling
the project activities that address the commitments with the project customer’s.

9. Project Planning CMMI
Most time-consuming project management activity.
Continuous activity from initial concept through to system
delivery.
The term “project plan” is used throughout this process area
to refer to the overall plan for controlling the project

11. Project Planning CMMI
Establish Estimates
Estimates of project planning parameters are established and
maintained.
include all information needed by the project to perform
necessary planning
organizing, staffing
directing, coordinating
reporting, and budgeting.

12. Project Planning CMMI
Estimate the Scope of the Project
• Project scope is the part of project planning
That involves determining and documenting a list of specific project
goals, tasks, costs and deadlines.
Effective scope management requires good communication to ensure that
everyone on the team understands the scope of the project.

13. Project Planning CMMI
Define Project Lifecycle Phases
The project lifecycle phases need to be defined depending on
the scope of requirements, the estimates for project
resources, and the nature of the project.

15. Project Planning CMMI
Estimate Effort and Cost
There are three main areas to estimate before your project Starts
Effort
Duration
Cost
Of the three, you must estimate effort first to understand the total
amount of work.
For example, if you have a project that you are estimating to be 800 effort hours,
the duration will depend on the resources that you can apply. If you only have one
person, the duration might be six months. If you have three people, the effort
might be three months or less.

16. Project Planning CMMI
• Once you understand the resources that you can apply to the project, you
are in a position to create the cost estimate.
Costs Include:

18. Project Planning CMMI
Develop a Project Plan
A project plan is a
formal
approved
document used to manage and control the execution of the project.
It is based on project requirements and established estimates

19. Project Planning CMMI
Plan Data Management
A data management plan is a formal document that outlines how you will handle
your data both during your research, and after the project is completed
1. Data management plan
2. Master list of managed data
3. Data content and format description
4. Lists of data requirements for acquirers and suppliers
5. Privacy requirements
6. Security requirements
7. Security procedures
8. Mechanisms for data retrieval, reproduction, and distribution
9. Schedule for the collection of project data
10. List of project data to be collected

20. Project Planning CMMI
Identify Project Risks
– Have not been done before
– Rely on new equipment
– Depend on training of personnel
– Allow extra margins for risky tasks

Plan Needed Knowledge and Skills
Assign tasks to specific people (or teams)
Order tasks so that they occur in a logical sequence
Match tasks to abilities of the team
Allow for flexibilities – the team can do sub-planning
One person (or team) may do multiple tasks (e.g. to reduce boredom).

22. Project Planning CMMI
Establish the Project Plan
A documented plan that addresses all relevant planning items is necessary
to achieve the mutual understanding and commitment of
individuals, groups, and organizations that execute or support the plans.
