- How do you make your time-based productivity perfect? It's simple. First, think of a change you want to make to the way you manage your time... You can pause this recording if you want a minute to think of an answer. Got one? Good. Why is it so challenging to put in place? After all, if it were easy, you'd have done it by now, right? To answer that question, let's assume that you are already a productive professional - you're not a novice and you've spent some time thinking about what makes you effective, efficient and high-performing. Does that fit? Now, imagine a classroom where you could get some answers. No, not a class of kids. Adults who are like you. Smart people who want more than trivial answers and top ten lists. That other stuff is for kids. You need some new insights that will help you to think differently - in a fresh, unique way. So let's start by dispelling a few myths. Number 1. Time cannot be managed. Time management - it doesn't exist. You may have already received that bulletin. How about Self-management? Noooo... that's too broad to be useful. After all, every kind of management there is involves some self management. So what DO you manage each day? It's Something called a time demand - an internal, individual commitment to complete an action in the future. See...You create a bunch of these time demands each day, and try to keep them alive until the actions you want to take are complete. Until that happens, you don't want to lose track of them. So myth #1 - is that time can actually be managed. It can't. Here are some more myths. Number 2. the myth Instant, magical change - It's just not possible, because we're changing habits, practices and rituals here - not a hard drive on your laptop. Myth Number 3. One-size-fits-all. Well.. that also doesn't work. Each of us needs a custom solution because the changes we want to make are all different. So what does work? Let's call it E-TaPS for short. Evaluate, Target, Plan and Support. Let's start with Evaluation - but not the kind you do when you open a magazine and do a quiz. It's the kind you can ONLY do when you have some new insights and have learned something new. Where can you learn this something new? Well, here's a hint. Not from the person who says, look at what I'm doing, it's new! It's better if it comes from data collected by researchers from a wide variety of fields - experts who have studied the behaviors of thousands of people After you have learned a thing or two from them, THEN you do your evaluation and develop your first profile - not one that's based on your personality, but on your current behaviors. But here's something interesting... During the process of learning how to you develop your profile, you will immediately see some gaps. COOL! But hold on a minute... don't immediately try to close the first gap you see with a quickie solution. Instead take a moment to target some new behaviors. Use these targets to put together a Plan of improvement that's easy to implement, and doesn't require you to be Superman...more like Clark Kent, maybe Once that's done- here's the hard part - Set up a Support environment that helps you achieve your goals That's it - not a guarantee of success, but a way to tip the scales in your favor so that you're more likely to succeed.
