Water Facts
• Americans are the biggest global consumers of water.
• Over the next 5 years, water efficiency and conservation will become critical factors in green
design, construction, and product selection.
- SmartMarket Report, Water Use In Buildings
• Buildings use 20% of the world’s available water.
- United Nations Environmental Program
• Commercial buildings use 88% of the potable water in the U.S.
- U.S. DOE
• Water-efficient fixtures can reduce consumption by 30% or more.

ROI Example Calculation
One-story building with four restrooms. There are 500 occupants who occupy the building: 250
male and 250 female.
1. Mens restroom
• 1.0 gpf urinals
• 1.6 gpf closets
• Sinks with push button metering faucets
2. Ladies restroom
• 1.6 gpf closets
• Sinks with push button metering faucets
Assumption: Males use urinals twice per day; closets once per day; Females
use closets three times per day. Both male and female use faucets three times
per day.

Example (cont.):
In calculating the design case, do NOT change the number of building occupants, the number of school days or
the frequency data.
Assume the following:
1. 0.125 gpf urinals will be used
2. 1.28 gpf water closets will be used
3. Electronic faucets with low-flow aerators (0.5 gpm) will be used. The electronics have been factored for a 12
seconds cycle time.

High-Efficiency Toilets
An HET is a fixture with an average flush volume of 1.28 gpf or less, and must meet the
performance requirements of ASME 19.2/CSA B45.1 and pass the 350 grams MaP.
That’s 20% less than most toilets on the market today. The current toilet standard is 1.6
gpf.
MaP Testing
• Simulates solid waste
• 1000 grams is the maximum Map Score

EPA WaterSense
• Voluntary labeling program - similar to the Energy Star Program.
• Provide consumers with easy ways to save water.
• Encourage innovation in manufacturing.
• Decrease water use and reduce strain on water resources and
infrastructure.
15
WaterSense helps consumers choose
cost-effective products by labeling those
certified at least 20% more efficient
without sacrificing performance.

High-Efficiency Urinals
An HEU is a urinal with a maximum flush volume of 0.5 gpf or less, and must meet the performance
requirements of ASME 19.2/CSA B45.1.
That’s 50% less than todays standard. The current urinal standard is 1.0 gpf.
HEU gpf options:
• 0.5 gpf
• 0.25 gpf
• 0.125 gpf
• Waterfree
• Hybrid
