  1. 1. 10 TIPS ON What Every artists Can Learn About Business , Royalties, copyrights From Taylor Swift
  2. 2. #1 Singer and songwriter Taylor Swift made a move that has shaken both music industry leaders and fellow artists alike.
  3. 3. #2 The Grammy awards winner has disrupted the industry with her decision to re-record her first six studio albums
  4. 4. #3 At age 15, Taylor was signed to Scott Borchetta’s Big Machine Records, now owned by Scooter Braun. For years, the singer was personally bullied and professionally attacked by Braun and his clients, which she described as incessant and relentless.
  5. 5. #4 Behind the glitz and glam, we see on our screens, some artistes are tied up in contractual obligations that limits their control over their own art and recordings. And Taylor wasn't having any of that.
  6. 6. #5 In the 80s and 90s, recording artists like Prince were one of the first to speak out against the inequity of the music.
  7. 7. #6 Prince was keen about the need to manage the timeline for creating and releasing his music and he believed artists should have more creative control.
  8. 8. #7 It didn't turn out too well for Prince because Warner bros refused to sell him his recording catalog. So, Prince turned to rerecording his songs but didn't have as much success as Swift's
  9. 9. #8 While rerecording is now easier, artists in the 90s were not presented with the opportunity of streaming and the internet. When an artist decides to re-record a song or an album, they’re re-creating the sound recording, but the underlying composition (song) is the same
  10. 10. #9 In Swift's case, her contract with Big Machine Records ended in 2018, and once her re-recording prohibitions were over, she released a new version of her 2012 breakthrough Red, now entitled Red (Taylor’s Version).
  11. 11. #10 So, it is more important than ever to understand contract terms and obligations, current copyright laws, and how to leverage the current music distribution trends to negotiate ownership in any recording contracts an artist may sign.
