digihealth impact trac reports are designed to improve understanding of how organizations, startups, government agencies, universities and others are testing, developing and commercializing digital solutions globally, in ways that go beyond investment reports released quarterly by various organizations.
Key trends highlighted in this report include digital-powered addiction solutions, GDPR's impact on digital health and virtual care.
Included in this report series is 'Patient Voices', a mini-research effort focused on providing a much-needed patient perspective on the human impact of the digital health revolution.

4. Why digihealth impact trac?
In Q3 2017, Enspektos released the first edition of digihealth impact trac, a
quarterly report series designed to improve understanding of how organizations,
startups, government agencies, universities and others are testing, developing and
commercializing digital solutions globally. This research compliments and expands
upon quarterly reports produced by StartUp Health, Rock Health and other
organizations focusing on U.S. and global digital health investment activity.
digihealth impact trac reports address key issues about how the digital health
landscape is evolving, including:
• Where people are focused from an implementation perspective: This can
include technology adoption, how care management is being reshaped by
digital innovations and more.
• How digital technologies are impacting health, well-being, workflows and
other factors: How are digital solutions being deployed? Who is benefiting?
This report series provides answers.
Like the Q1 2018 edition, this installment of digihealth impact trac
features Patient Voices. Too often, the patient perspective is missing from
conversations and research about digital health. With the help of Savvy
Cooperative, which connects patients with opportunities to share their experience
with innovators, we present qualitative and quantitative data featuring patient
perspectives on key trends highlighted in this report.
How can you benefit from digihealth impact trac? We hope the data and
insights presented in this report provide you with a more nuanced and holistic
perspective on the true shape, scope and impact of digital solutions on global
health. There is much to be learned from understanding how digital innovations are
being diffused globally, the differences between what organizations are focusing
on and the platforms that are receiving funding, and how patients feel about the
technologies being deployed to transform care. If you have any questions or
comments about this research please contact us at info@digitalhealthmaven.com.

DigiHealth Informer Savvy Cooperative
Data in this report was sourced
from the Digihealth Informer real-time
database. This is an intelligence and
productivity platform with more than 5
million data points (collected since
January 2015) focusing on the global
digital and emerging technology market,
including:
• Market Events: Product releases,

The Global Digital Health Strength Index: Q2 2018
Traditionally, the strength of the digital health market has been measured by
the level of investment dollars flowing into startups and other firms. While financial
strength is a valuable metric, it can provide an incomplete picture of overall market
potential. Other factors, specifically whether there is a focus on measuring digital
health-related outcomes, improving data infrastructure and global innovation diffusion,
also have a significant impact on whether digital technologies are (and will be)
successful.
To improve understanding of digital health’s impact and scope we created the
Global Digital Health Strength Index (displayed on the previous page) in Q3 2017.
The premise of the Index is that what people write about/reference online reflects
what they are doing. Using DigiHealth Informer, we can automatically analyze millions
of social media posts, news articles and other content to determine how often specific
concepts and topics are discussed and more. Based on this analysis, compared to Q2
2017:
• Infrastructure: Global emphasis on ensuring digital solutions are well-connected
and integrated from a data perspective to aid deeper analysis of population health
data sets and other topics was similar between Q2 2018 and Q2 2017
• Regional Diversity: Digital health’s global diffusion, which increased over
previous periods, was flat quarter over quarter
• Health Outcomes Emphasis: Health outcomes improvement continues to be a
major area of focus for global digital health innovators, especially in countries with
centralized health payment systems, such as the United Kingdom
• Financial Strength: StartUp Health reported more deal volume during the first
half of 2018, “414 deals compared to 344 in Q2 2017, which is the largest deal
volume we have seen since we began tracking funding in 2010.” (link)

9. Overview:KeyQ22018DigitalHealthTrends
What were the major digital health trends and themes
that drove interest and attention during Q2 2018? As
illustrated in the graphic below, during this period the advent
of new data privacy regulations in Europe raised concerns
about whether health data will remain accessible. Apple
made moves to penetrate the health market more deeply.
And, digital health addiction treatment and management tools
rose in prominence.

provide additional context on key trends that gained
prominence during Q2 2018, as measured via
DigiHealth Informer.
Savvy Cooperative conducted an online survey of its
diverse patient community to gather data from patients
facing addiction or with family members grappling with
this condition.
Savvy recruited 63 patients with addiction (or with family
members facing addiction) for this study.
To date, this is the first research revealing how
patients facing addiction (and those with family
members with the condition) view digital solutions
focused on helping manage and overcome
addiction.

What Patients Are Saying
Hopeful, But Realistic: “While I think there is potential for tech an apps to help
those with addiction, I feel there are challenges. One is getting that person with
addiction problems to not only admit there is a problem, but also take
recommendations for how to manage it. I feel there is a sense of defeat in just
admitting it and it takes time to come to terms with how to manage it. I don't feel if I
recommended a tech solution that my partner would use it. Therefore it would have to
seamlessly fit into their life and be individualized so that each person could make it
what they want. That could be very empowering and it could allow them to manage
their addiction in a way that gives them support, access and anonymity.”
Cautious About Potential Negative Impacts: “Opioid addicts struggle with
motivation — period. Their brain is affected [in terms of ] how they process the
cravings and what they feel they need. An addict would need to [benefit from] long
term treatment before being able to consistently use and benefit from a digital device.
Perhaps it could help more with other addictions during the beginning of recovery.”
Digital Solutions Can Be Helpful, But Human Support is Vital: “I believe that
CBT and social media support systems can be helpful as long as the person with the
addiction is also getting the proper in-person, managed care and working and proven,
tested, peer-reviewed and researched addiction treatment program like 12 Steps.”

23. Policy and Regulations:
What is some of the latest on this key trend?
Update: 2018 Trends That Matter
The European General Data
Protection Regulations (GDPR)
were a key area of focus during Q2
for some digital health innovators
collecting data from consumers in
the E.U.
The regulations requires
organizations to provide information
about what data is being collected
about them, explicit consent to have
personal information gathered, the
right to be forgotten (all data about
them deleted upon request) and
more.
Some innovators are worried
that the regulations will stifle how
organizations collect health data
from patients and limit the health
data sharing and aggregation
required to deliver digital solutions.

activated devices, such as the Amazon Alexa, have already generated
attention and interesting use cases in health.
