Cornerstones of the Public-Private Partnership
• Only public domain material may be digitised
• The cooperation with Google is non-exclusive
• We receive copies of all digitised items and can put them online
for non-commercial use
• Both partners are obliged to make all of the digitised items available
for online access free of charge
• We can make our digitised items available via other platforms
• We are fully autonomous in our decisions on which books are
to be digitised
• The logistics and digitisation processes are accompanied and
evaluated by our Restoration Institute Dr. Johanna Rachinger, 27th May, 2011

Public debate
“This coup by the National Library has saved it 30 million euros, places it in
the digital avantgarde, and creates for its readers and scholars in the whole
world significantly facilitated conditions for reading and working. What
formerly had to be garnered by wearying physical means in the best libraries
or was not available at all, is now only a click of the mouse away. That will
accelerate research, throw new light on the holdings of the best institutions,
and unburden the reading rooms.”

Public debate
“why representatives of authors or publishers, instead of looking at the
possibilities opened up for books (and readers), are painting fear scenarios,
while the allegedly most conservative group of participants, the libraries,
are going ahead and helping to shape the future.”
