Litany
From the Greek word “Litaneia” meaning supplication.
are collections of statements which identify the
qualities or noble aspects of the person honoured
which are then followed by the repeated
supplication, "Pray for us.“
5
6
At first, to prevent abuse, Pope Clement
VIII in 1601, permitted only two to be
used in public worship:
▸ Litany of All Saints
▸ Litany to the Blessed Virgin Mary
Today, there are six litanies approved by
the Catholic Church. Many other litanies
existed, and all of them may be prayed
privately.
Litany of the
Blessed Virgin Mary
This litany is a series of
beautiful invocations of our
Blessed Mother, addressing
her by various titles and
beseeching her intercession.
7
also known as
Marian Litany of Loreto
so called because of its use
in the sanctuary of Loreto
(Italy) since at least as far
back as 1531, was officially
approved in 1587 by Pope
Sixtus V.
8
Modern Additions to the Litany 9
▸ 1814 Queen of all Saints (Pope Pius VII)

Holy Mary, Holy Mother of God, Holy Virgin of Virgins 16
In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel
was sent from God to a town of
Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin
betrothed to a man named Joseph,
of the house of David, and the
virgin’s name was Mary. And coming
to her, he said, “Hail [Mary], favored
one! The Lord is with you.”
Feast day of “Annunciation” is on
March 25.
(ICT2): Ave Maria / Hail Mary / Bapu Maria 17
Mary,
the Mother
Facets of Mary’s role
as a Mother
18
▸ Mother of Christ,
▸ Mother of the Church
▸ Mother of Mercy
▸ Mother of Divine Grace
▸ Mother of Hope
▸ Mother most pure
▸ Mother most chaste
19
▸ Mother Inviolate
▸ Mother undefiled
▸ Mother most amiable
▸ Mother most admirable
▸ Mother of Good Counsel
▸ Mother of our Creator
▸ Mother of our Savior
The two cameos show Mary nursing and caring for
the child Jesus.
Two inscriptions framing the pictures highlight the
Mother’s love. Jesus is the beloved who rests in
Mary’s bosom (Canticles 1:3). She gave birth to him,
the firstborn, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes
(Luke 2:7).
“I carried you in my womb for nine months, nursed
you for three years, brought up, educated and
supported you.” (2 Maccabees 7:27).
(HUMSS2B): Mater Christi / Mother of Christ / Indu nang Cristo 20
At the same moment when Mary consented to become
the mother of God, she also consented to become the
mother of all the children of salvation, and bore them
already at that time beneath her heart.
One cannot talk about the Church if Mary, the Mother
of the Lord, is not present with His brothers.
Only Mary could make one heart and one mind of Jesus'
Apostles, as though Christ wanted to show us that He
entrusted to His Mother's maternal care the mission of
making the Church a single family.
Her memorial is on Monday after Pentecost Sunday.
(STEM2E): Mater Ecclesiae / Mother of the Church / Indu ning Sta. Iglesia 21
Mary, the inviolate mother, is the “mirror without stain”
(Wisdom 7). The light and power of the Holy Spirit
traverses her heart and is perfectly reflected; she is
inviolately passing on the Spirit’s grace so as to bring
light into the world (the burning candle) by the virginal
birth (“virginea generatio”).
Mary was an inviolate Virgin, for God Himself willed to
respect her before, during and after the Incarnation.
“Because she has loved chastity, she will be blessed in
eternity” (Judith 15:10).
(HUMSS2C): Mater inviolata / Mother Inviolate / Indung alang malit qng e matulid 22
Mary’s amiability is directed first of all to the Christchild as is
shown in the “Eleousa” (tenderness) expression of the
medallion. The hearts of Mother and Son are burning in
reciprocal love. Mary is the most amiable.
To attest this superlative, Mary is compared to prominent Old
Testament women figures, for example to Esther, who is of
elegant aspect (Esther 2); Judith, who is also of elegant aspect
(Judith 8); Rebecca, who is of exquisite beauty (Genesis 24);
Rachel, who is well-formed and beautiful (Genesis 29).
However, the verdict of the little angel is irrevocable, Mary is
“amabilis super omnes.” She is more lovable than all four of
them.
“You exceed through your amiability the love of all other
women” (2 Kings 1).
(HUMSS2D): Mater Amabilis / Mother most amiable / Indung kairug-irug 23
In the Alban Hills, not far from the city of Rome, lies the little
town of Genazzano, where the miraculous image of Our Lady
of Good Counsel is venerated which dates back to 1467.
Overshadowed by the Holy Ghost, Mary became the Mother
of God. His gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, and Counsel
belong to her. She is Our Mother of Good Counsel because
she is the Spouse of God the Holy Ghost.
If to her was granted the wisdom to counsel her Son, surely
she has the wisdom to counsel poor humanity. In her there is
the wisdom of ages.
Her feast day is on April 26.
(STEM2C): Mater Boni Consilii / Mother of Good Counsel / Indu ning masampac a usuc 24
Mary, although a creature, is really the Mother of Her
Creator, the Mother of God's Son to whom she has
given a human body: the fruit of her flesh and blood is
the Son of God in whom and by whom all things were
created.
Here we understand more than ever how Mary's dignity
reaches the threshold of the infinite.
"God could make a bigger world or a wider sky, but He
could not raise a pure creature higher than Mary, for the
dignity of the Mother of God is the highest dignity that
can be conferred on a creature" (St. Bonaventure).
(HUMSS2A): Mater Creatoris / Mother of our Creator / Indu ning Miglalang 25
Redemption has not only freed us from sin and
reconciled us with Our Lord. It has also made us into
children of God and has given us a Mother, the very
Mother who gave birth to the Word when He took
human nature.
She is the Mother of Jesus Christ who is the
Redeemer of human race by His Crucifixion and
Death.
Mary is the one of whom it is said, “She will bear a
Son and name him Jesus, and he will save his people”
(Matthew 1).
(STEM2D): Mater Salvatoris / Mother of our Savior / Indu ning Mengabus 26
Mary,
the Virgin
Merits and Effects of
Mary’s Virginity
27
▸ Virgin most prudent
▸ Virgin most venerable
▸ Virgin most renowned
▸ Virgin most powerful
▸ Virgin most merciful
▸ Virgin most faithful
28
The Virgin's power arises from her dignity as the Mother
of God, who is all-powerful with her Divine Son, and
whose prayers are most acceptable to Him on account
of her profound humility. He has thus armed this mighty
Woman, who crushes the head of the Serpent
wherever she is invoked for aid.
On the lower half of this illustration we find the
representations of two powerful typological feminine
figures of Mary in the Old Testament. To the left we
have Jael, who killed Sisera, the commander of
the Canaanites, hammering and crushing his head with
peg and mallet (Judges 5:26). The woman to the right is
Judith decapitating Holofernes (Judith 11:17).
(ABM2C): Virgo Potens / Virgin most powerful / Birhen a mayupaya 29
Mary is merciful because, after Jesus, her Immaculate
Heart is the most loving and compassionate. Her hands
folded and head inclined, Mary suggests meekness and
compassion.
Right and left of Mary’s portrait we discover two
allegorical animals emphasizing mercy: one is the Pelican
feeding her brood, with its own blood; the other is the
mother-hen protecting her chicks.
The bottom half of the illustration pictures the wedding
feast of Cana, a further reference to Mary’s
attentiveness to human needs and her merciful
intercession.
(ABM2A): Virgo Clemens / Virgin most merciful / Birhen a mapamacululu 30
The real reason for Mary’s title is illustrated in the
image below which features the crucifixion. Mary is indeed
the “faithful woman.” She is standing at the foot of the cross,
her heart pierced with a sword.
The Virgin Mary is faithful to her office of distributing grace
to her most needy children, as she was faithful to her Divine
Son while on earth. "Never was it known that anyone who
fled to her protection was left unaided."
Mary is loyal, true to her word and promises. She is reliable
and can be trusted. She is devoted, and always available as a
true friend in spite of our wayward choices. Mary draws us
closer to her Son so he may be known to all - all for the
greater glory of God.
(ABM2B): Virgo Fidelis / Virgin most faithful / Birhen a Matibe a Lub cing mayap 31

The title called “Seat of Wisdom” refers to the throne of
Solomon. Mary is personified wisdom sitting on Solomon’s
throne made of ivory and gold (1 Kings 10:18-20).
The cameo of mother and child is surrounded by symbols of
science and knowledge (globe, telescope, square). The throne
of Solomon is no longer that of human but of divine wisdom,
the Word of God made man.
In fact, sitting on the throne of Solomon she comes to be
the throne upon which her Son, “the Wisdom of the Father,”
is seated. For wisdom was incarnate in her Son Jesus whom
she carried in her womb.
Feast of Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom, is celebrated on June 8.
(STEM2B): Sedes Sapientiae / Seat of Wisdom / Luklukan ning Kabiasnan 34
The preeminent symbol in this illustration is the monstrance
containing Our Lady, and simultaneously Mary containing and
pointing to the radiating host on her chest.
The Immaculata (see twelve stars) is herself a monstrance,
meaning transparent of and to God. It is her honor to make God
visible through her sinlessness and as dwelling place of the Holy
Spirit and her Son Jesus Christ. Mary is, according to 2 Timothy
21 “a vessel for lofty use (“vas in honorem”), dedicated, beneficial
to the master of the house.”
The master of the house here is Christ himself, present in the
host held by the “vessel of honor,” his mother Mary. She is
indeed, as Immaculata, the work of the Almighty One, and thus an
“admirable vessel.”
(F&B2): Vas Honorabile / Vessel of Honor / Lulanan a sucat irangal 35
This is an ancient biblical symbol related to the temple of
God in Jerusalem, which God Himself commanded to be
covered with gold so that it would be worthy to be His
dwelling place on earth. (cf. 1Kings 6:22, 1Kings 7:48-50)
Mary was temple of God; her womb housed the Lord in
which His human nature grew and was nourished.
Our Lady is a House of Gold, means that Her soul was
resplendent and glowing with charity, with love of God
and Her neighbor—that is what made it so precious to
God, that it was a House of Gold.
(STEM2A): Domus Aurea / House of Gold / Bale Guintu 36
It refers to a little cloud appearing above the sea as a sign of
hope, implying that rain will come and free the land from
drought. The little cloud (small as a man's hand) seen from Mt.
Carmel is believed to be the 'Star of the Sea' and Mary, thus, the
sign of hope which announces freedom and renewal. (1Kings
18:41-45).
It came to be seen as allegorical of Mary's role as "guiding star"
on the way to Christ. Under this name, the Virgin Mary is
believed to intercede as a guide and protector of seafarers in
particular, amidst the storm-tossed waves of the sea, as she
illumine us to believe in Christ, born of her for the salvation of
the world.
Her feast day is on September 27.

The image of Mary is surrounded by the symbols of the
apothecary and medical professions. The image also
expresses Mary’s “compassion,” her suffering with those who
suffer. The lower half of the illustration contrasts sickness
(sickbed) and healing (pool of Bethesda).
Mary is a true physician, though she is not the ultimate
source of health and redemption, for it is God himself who
heals all our infirmities. But she acts as a healer by radiating
holiness (virtue).
With regard to the body, poor humanity is subject to many
illnesses, and the Virgin Mary has a loving compassion for all
of our woes, even the least. Traditionally, it is celebrated as
feast on August 25.

Mary,
the Queen
Mary’s role as Queen
41
▸ Queen of Angels
▸ Queen of Patriarchs
▸ Queen of Prophets
▸ Queen of Apostles
▸ Queen of Martyrs
▸ Queen of Confessors
▸ Queen of Virgins
42
▸ Queen of all Saints
▸ Queen conceived without Original Sin
▸ Queen assumed into Heaven
▸ Queen of the Most Holy Rosary
▸ Queen of Families
▸ Queen of Peace
The central picture of Mother and Son is surrounded by a
host of angels. Some of the angels are easily recognizable,
so Gabriel with his bunch of lilies. There is also Michael in
knightly armor and Raphael with the pilgrim staff.
More beautiful in her nature than the Cherubim, the
Seraphim, and the whole host of angels. Mary by grace was
free from all stains of sin. Mary was exalted above the
angels; so that she sees none above her but her Son, who is
the only-begotten of the Father.
Even the angels are surpassed in grace by Mary, and they
devotedly serve her as their Queen. Her feast falls on August
2.
(STEM1C): Regina Angelorum / Queen of Angels/ Reyna ning Angeles 43
Mary initiated her mission as Queen of Apostles in the
Cenacle. She gathered the apostles together, comforted
them, and assisted them in prayer. Together with them she
hoped, desired and prayed; with them her petitions were
heeded and she received the Holy Spirit on the day of
Pentecost.
Mary was made the apostles' Mother and our own by our
Savior on the cross. She exercised a universal apostolate,
one so vast that it embraced all others. The apostolate of
prayer, the apostolate of good example, the apostolate of
suffering -- Mary fulfilled them all.
Her feast falls on the first Saturday after the ascension.
(HUMSS1D): Regina Apostolorum / Queen of Apostles / Reina ning Apostoles 44
Mary in her immaculate body is assumed into heaven in
virtue of an uplifting grace, escorted and upheld by the
angels, raised aloft by grace. God embraced her, blessed
her, and declared her Queen of the universe, exalting
her above all the angels and saints.
It is also an Easter prayer as a wonderful tribute to our
Lord’s resurrection and to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Traditionally, it is prayed standing, often at noon, in place
of another well-known prayer, the Angelus, during the
Easter Season from Holy Saturday until Pentecost.
Feast days: August 15 (Assumption); August 22 (Queenship)
(STEM1D): Regina Coeli / Queen of Heaven / Reina miuli Banua 45
Mary is the Mother of the Prince of Peace.
She is the dawn of peace shining in the darkness of a
world out of joint; she never ceases to implore her Son
for peace although His hour is not yet come (John 2:4).
She always intervenes on behalf of sorrowing humanity
in the hour of danger. Today she who is the mother of
many orphans and our advocate in this tremendous
catastrophe will most quickly hear our prayers.
Her memorial feast is celebrated on January 24 and July
9.

“The outstanding characteristic of the Church
in the Philippines is to be a “pueblo amante de
Maria” -- a people in love with Mary…The
typically “Filipino” approach to Christ,
therefore, is with and through Mary. Devotion
to Mary has always been intimately
intertwined with Christ.” (CFC, 45-46)

  • 5. Litany From the Greek word “Litaneia” meaning supplication. are collections of statements which identify the qualities or noble aspects of the person honoured which are then followed by the repeated supplication, "Pray for us.“ 5
  • 6. 6 At first, to prevent abuse, Pope Clement VIII in 1601, permitted only two to be used in public worship: ▸ Litany of All Saints ▸ Litany to the Blessed Virgin Mary Today, there are six litanies approved by the Catholic Church. Many other litanies existed, and all of them may be prayed privately.
  • 7. Litany of the Blessed Virgin Mary This litany is a series of beautiful invocations of our Blessed Mother, addressing her by various titles and beseeching her intercession. 7
  • 8. also known as Marian Litany of Loreto so called because of its use in the sanctuary of Loreto (Italy) since at least as far back as 1531, was officially approved in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V. 8
  • 9. Modern Additions to the Litany 9 ▸ 1814 Queen of all Saints (Pope Pius VII) ▸ 1854 Queen Conceived without Original Sin (Pope Pius XII) ▸ 1883 Queen of the Most Holy Rosary (Pope Leo XIII) ▸ 1903 Mother of Good Counsel (Pope Leo XIII) ▸ 1917 Queen of Peace (Pope Benedict XV) ▸ 1950 Queen assumed into Heaven (Pope Pius XII) ▸ 1980 Mother of the Church (Pope John Paul II) ▸ 1995 Queen of Families (Pope John Paul II) On June 20, 2020, Pope Francis added three invocations: Mother of Mercy, Mother of Hope, and Solace of Migrants.

  • 17. In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin’s name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail [Mary], favored one! The Lord is with you.” Feast day of “Annunciation” is on March 25. (ICT2): Ave Maria / Hail Mary / Bapu Maria 17
  • 18. Mary, the Mother Facets of Mary’s role as a Mother 18
  • 19. ▸ Mother of Christ, ▸ Mother of the Church ▸ Mother of Mercy ▸ Mother of Divine Grace ▸ Mother of Hope ▸ Mother most pure ▸ Mother most chaste 19 ▸ Mother Inviolate ▸ Mother undefiled ▸ Mother most amiable ▸ Mother most admirable ▸ Mother of Good Counsel ▸ Mother of our Creator ▸ Mother of our Savior
  • 20. The two cameos show Mary nursing and caring for the child Jesus. Two inscriptions framing the pictures highlight the Mother’s love. Jesus is the beloved who rests in Mary’s bosom (Canticles 1:3). She gave birth to him, the firstborn, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes (Luke 2:7). “I carried you in my womb for nine months, nursed you for three years, brought up, educated and supported you.” (2 Maccabees 7:27). (HUMSS2B): Mater Christi / Mother of Christ / Indu nang Cristo 20
  • 21. At the same moment when Mary consented to become the mother of God, she also consented to become the mother of all the children of salvation, and bore them already at that time beneath her heart. One cannot talk about the Church if Mary, the Mother of the Lord, is not present with His brothers. Only Mary could make one heart and one mind of Jesus' Apostles, as though Christ wanted to show us that He entrusted to His Mother's maternal care the mission of making the Church a single family. Her memorial is on Monday after Pentecost Sunday. (STEM2E): Mater Ecclesiae / Mother of the Church / Indu ning Sta. Iglesia 21
  • 22. Mary, the inviolate mother, is the “mirror without stain” (Wisdom 7). The light and power of the Holy Spirit traverses her heart and is perfectly reflected; she is inviolately passing on the Spirit’s grace so as to bring light into the world (the burning candle) by the virginal birth (“virginea generatio”). Mary was an inviolate Virgin, for God Himself willed to respect her before, during and after the Incarnation. “Because she has loved chastity, she will be blessed in eternity” (Judith 15:10). (HUMSS2C): Mater inviolata / Mother Inviolate / Indung alang malit qng e matulid 22
  • 23. Mary’s amiability is directed first of all to the Christchild as is shown in the “Eleousa” (tenderness) expression of the medallion. The hearts of Mother and Son are burning in reciprocal love. Mary is the most amiable. To attest this superlative, Mary is compared to prominent Old Testament women figures, for example to Esther, who is of elegant aspect (Esther 2); Judith, who is also of elegant aspect (Judith 8); Rebecca, who is of exquisite beauty (Genesis 24); Rachel, who is well-formed and beautiful (Genesis 29). However, the verdict of the little angel is irrevocable, Mary is “amabilis super omnes.” She is more lovable than all four of them. “You exceed through your amiability the love of all other women” (2 Kings 1). (HUMSS2D): Mater Amabilis / Mother most amiable / Indung kairug-irug 23
  • 24. In the Alban Hills, not far from the city of Rome, lies the little town of Genazzano, where the miraculous image of Our Lady of Good Counsel is venerated which dates back to 1467. Overshadowed by the Holy Ghost, Mary became the Mother of God. His gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, and Counsel belong to her. She is Our Mother of Good Counsel because she is the Spouse of God the Holy Ghost. If to her was granted the wisdom to counsel her Son, surely she has the wisdom to counsel poor humanity. In her there is the wisdom of ages. Her feast day is on April 26. (STEM2C): Mater Boni Consilii / Mother of Good Counsel / Indu ning masampac a usuc 24
  • 25. Mary, although a creature, is really the Mother of Her Creator, the Mother of God's Son to whom she has given a human body: the fruit of her flesh and blood is the Son of God in whom and by whom all things were created. Here we understand more than ever how Mary's dignity reaches the threshold of the infinite. "God could make a bigger world or a wider sky, but He could not raise a pure creature higher than Mary, for the dignity of the Mother of God is the highest dignity that can be conferred on a creature" (St. Bonaventure). (HUMSS2A): Mater Creatoris / Mother of our Creator / Indu ning Miglalang 25
  • 26. Redemption has not only freed us from sin and reconciled us with Our Lord. It has also made us into children of God and has given us a Mother, the very Mother who gave birth to the Word when He took human nature. She is the Mother of Jesus Christ who is the Redeemer of human race by His Crucifixion and Death. Mary is the one of whom it is said, “She will bear a Son and name him Jesus, and he will save his people” (Matthew 1). (STEM2D): Mater Salvatoris / Mother of our Savior / Indu ning Mengabus 26
  • 27. Mary, the Virgin Merits and Effects of Mary’s Virginity 27
  • 28. ▸ Virgin most prudent ▸ Virgin most venerable ▸ Virgin most renowned ▸ Virgin most powerful ▸ Virgin most merciful ▸ Virgin most faithful 28
  • 29. The Virgin's power arises from her dignity as the Mother of God, who is all-powerful with her Divine Son, and whose prayers are most acceptable to Him on account of her profound humility. He has thus armed this mighty Woman, who crushes the head of the Serpent wherever she is invoked for aid. On the lower half of this illustration we find the representations of two powerful typological feminine figures of Mary in the Old Testament. To the left we have Jael, who killed Sisera, the commander of the Canaanites, hammering and crushing his head with peg and mallet (Judges 5:26). The woman to the right is Judith decapitating Holofernes (Judith 11:17). (ABM2C): Virgo Potens / Virgin most powerful / Birhen a mayupaya 29
  • 30. Mary is merciful because, after Jesus, her Immaculate Heart is the most loving and compassionate. Her hands folded and head inclined, Mary suggests meekness and compassion. Right and left of Mary’s portrait we discover two allegorical animals emphasizing mercy: one is the Pelican feeding her brood, with its own blood; the other is the mother-hen protecting her chicks. The bottom half of the illustration pictures the wedding feast of Cana, a further reference to Mary’s attentiveness to human needs and her merciful intercession. (ABM2A): Virgo Clemens / Virgin most merciful / Birhen a mapamacululu 30
  • 31. The real reason for Mary’s title is illustrated in the image below which features the crucifixion. Mary is indeed the “faithful woman.” She is standing at the foot of the cross, her heart pierced with a sword. The Virgin Mary is faithful to her office of distributing grace to her most needy children, as she was faithful to her Divine Son while on earth. "Never was it known that anyone who fled to her protection was left unaided." Mary is loyal, true to her word and promises. She is reliable and can be trusted. She is devoted, and always available as a true friend in spite of our wayward choices. Mary draws us closer to her Son so he may be known to all - all for the greater glory of God. (ABM2B): Virgo Fidelis / Virgin most faithful / Birhen a Matibe a Lub cing mayap 31
  • 32. Symbols of Mary Old Testament Symbols pointing out Mary’s virtues and role in salvation 32
  • 33. ▸ Mirror of Justice ▸ Seat of Wisdom ▸ Cause of our Joy ▸ Spiritual Vessel ▸ Vessel of Honor ▸ Singular Vessel of Devotion 33 ▸ Mystical Rose ▸ Tower of David ▸ Tower of Ivory ▸ House of Gold ▸ Ark of the Covenant ▸ Gate of Heaven ▸ Morning Star / Star of the Sea
  • 34. The title called “Seat of Wisdom” refers to the throne of Solomon. Mary is personified wisdom sitting on Solomon’s throne made of ivory and gold (1 Kings 10:18-20). The cameo of mother and child is surrounded by symbols of science and knowledge (globe, telescope, square). The throne of Solomon is no longer that of human but of divine wisdom, the Word of God made man. In fact, sitting on the throne of Solomon she comes to be the throne upon which her Son, “the Wisdom of the Father,” is seated. For wisdom was incarnate in her Son Jesus whom she carried in her womb. Feast of Our Lady, Seat of Wisdom, is celebrated on June 8. (STEM2B): Sedes Sapientiae / Seat of Wisdom / Luklukan ning Kabiasnan 34
  • 35. The preeminent symbol in this illustration is the monstrance containing Our Lady, and simultaneously Mary containing and pointing to the radiating host on her chest. The Immaculata (see twelve stars) is herself a monstrance, meaning transparent of and to God. It is her honor to make God visible through her sinlessness and as dwelling place of the Holy Spirit and her Son Jesus Christ. Mary is, according to 2 Timothy 21 “a vessel for lofty use (“vas in honorem”), dedicated, beneficial to the master of the house.” The master of the house here is Christ himself, present in the host held by the “vessel of honor,” his mother Mary. She is indeed, as Immaculata, the work of the Almighty One, and thus an “admirable vessel.” (F&B2): Vas Honorabile / Vessel of Honor / Lulanan a sucat irangal 35
  • 36. This is an ancient biblical symbol related to the temple of God in Jerusalem, which God Himself commanded to be covered with gold so that it would be worthy to be His dwelling place on earth. (cf. 1Kings 6:22, 1Kings 7:48-50) Mary was temple of God; her womb housed the Lord in which His human nature grew and was nourished. Our Lady is a House of Gold, means that Her soul was resplendent and glowing with charity, with love of God and Her neighbor—that is what made it so precious to God, that it was a House of Gold. (STEM2A): Domus Aurea / House of Gold / Bale Guintu 36
  • 37. It refers to a little cloud appearing above the sea as a sign of hope, implying that rain will come and free the land from drought. The little cloud (small as a man's hand) seen from Mt. Carmel is believed to be the 'Star of the Sea' and Mary, thus, the sign of hope which announces freedom and renewal. (1Kings 18:41-45). It came to be seen as allegorical of Mary's role as "guiding star" on the way to Christ. Under this name, the Virgin Mary is believed to intercede as a guide and protector of seafarers in particular, amidst the storm-tossed waves of the sea, as she illumine us to believe in Christ, born of her for the salvation of the world. Her feast day is on September 27. (GAS2): Stella Maris / Star of the Sea 37
  • 38. Mary, the Helper Mary’s role as advocate for spiritual and corporal works of mercy 38
  • 39. ▸ Health of the Sick ▸ Refuge of Sinners ▸ Solace of Migrants ▸ Comforter of the Afflicted ▸ Help of Christians 39
  • 40. The image of Mary is surrounded by the symbols of the apothecary and medical professions. The image also expresses Mary’s “compassion,” her suffering with those who suffer. The lower half of the illustration contrasts sickness (sickbed) and healing (pool of Bethesda). Mary is a true physician, though she is not the ultimate source of health and redemption, for it is God himself who heals all our infirmities. But she acts as a healer by radiating holiness (virtue). With regard to the body, poor humanity is subject to many illnesses, and the Virgin Mary has a loving compassion for all of our woes, even the least. Traditionally, it is celebrated as feast on August 25. (Caregiving1): Salus infirmorum / Health of the Sick / Kamasmas da reng Salunan 40
  • 42. ▸ Queen of Angels ▸ Queen of Patriarchs ▸ Queen of Prophets ▸ Queen of Apostles ▸ Queen of Martyrs ▸ Queen of Confessors ▸ Queen of Virgins 42 ▸ Queen of all Saints ▸ Queen conceived without Original Sin ▸ Queen assumed into Heaven ▸ Queen of the Most Holy Rosary ▸ Queen of Families ▸ Queen of Peace
  • 43. The central picture of Mother and Son is surrounded by a host of angels. Some of the angels are easily recognizable, so Gabriel with his bunch of lilies. There is also Michael in knightly armor and Raphael with the pilgrim staff. More beautiful in her nature than the Cherubim, the Seraphim, and the whole host of angels. Mary by grace was free from all stains of sin. Mary was exalted above the angels; so that she sees none above her but her Son, who is the only-begotten of the Father. Even the angels are surpassed in grace by Mary, and they devotedly serve her as their Queen. Her feast falls on August 2. (STEM1C): Regina Angelorum / Queen of Angels/ Reyna ning Angeles 43
  • 44. Mary initiated her mission as Queen of Apostles in the Cenacle. She gathered the apostles together, comforted them, and assisted them in prayer. Together with them she hoped, desired and prayed; with them her petitions were heeded and she received the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Mary was made the apostles' Mother and our own by our Savior on the cross. She exercised a universal apostolate, one so vast that it embraced all others. The apostolate of prayer, the apostolate of good example, the apostolate of suffering -- Mary fulfilled them all. Her feast falls on the first Saturday after the ascension. (HUMSS1D): Regina Apostolorum / Queen of Apostles / Reina ning Apostoles 44
  • 45. Mary in her immaculate body is assumed into heaven in virtue of an uplifting grace, escorted and upheld by the angels, raised aloft by grace. God embraced her, blessed her, and declared her Queen of the universe, exalting her above all the angels and saints. It is also an Easter prayer as a wonderful tribute to our Lord’s resurrection and to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Traditionally, it is prayed standing, often at noon, in place of another well-known prayer, the Angelus, during the Easter Season from Holy Saturday until Pentecost. Feast days: August 15 (Assumption); August 22 (Queenship) (STEM1D): Regina Coeli / Queen of Heaven / Reina miuli Banua 45
  • 46. Mary is the Mother of the Prince of Peace. She is the dawn of peace shining in the darkness of a world out of joint; she never ceases to implore her Son for peace although His hour is not yet come (John 2:4). She always intervenes on behalf of sorrowing humanity in the hour of danger. Today she who is the mother of many orphans and our advocate in this tremendous catastrophe will most quickly hear our prayers. Her memorial feast is celebrated on January 24 and July 9.
