The Python ecosystem is supported by some pillars that are - community, - theoretical material, - tools, - libraries, - PSF - and language itself. In this talk I would like to reflect on each of these pillars of the ecosystem What are the priorities and in terms of quality what are the vulnerabilities of each of them. I will mention the importance of all but focus on the quality of the ecosystem of libraries, tools and theoretical material. The reflection will be around answering some questions: - How to maintain the quality of libraries published in PyPI? - What are the biggest vulnerabilities and how can we help avoid the risks? - The importance of quality theoretical material (generated by the community) - Can we trust everything that is available in PyPI? - Are ecosystem teaching and documentation approaches safe, inclusive and easy to assimilate? - What can we do to help solve the problems identified? I will present some real cases and examples of problems encountered and security issues involving mainly PyPI

This presentation covers the TelaSocial project, how it got started within the ICMC-USP community, part of University of Sao Paulo. It covers the open-based goals of the project and specific scenarios related to the pilot program at the ICMC, the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science in Sao Carlos, Brazil. While the presentation covers the pilot case the messages within this documentation does not represent messages from ICMC. TelaSocial is a social-aware Web-based solution for kiosks. It uses an open model and aims for display-based system that does not get data from traditional broadcast. Instead, it uses the Web and promotes participation for public spaces. The project started in Brazil and we are looking for partners to move on in the direction of open education and to help communities with a participatory solution.

In this session we will examine how we are leveraging open source, Drupal 8 with one of the largest federated non-profit organization in the world, the YMCA. We will focus specifically on a community driven initiative, OpenY, which is a Drupal distribution custom built for YMCAs everywhere. Some specific topics we will go over include: Leveraging open source software to foster sharing and collaboration. Developing a communication strategy focused on key benefits of Drupal and open source, such as cost and speed of innovation. Story about building custom Drupal 8 Distribution The beginning of OpenY distribution. The biggest technical challenges: How to provide scalable and flexible architecture? It's true: Drupal 8 includes big and exciting changes to its core and how Drupal code is written. These include using outside PHP libraries (Guzzle, Symfony, etc) as well as embracing PHP 5.4 and object-oriented code. Scary, right? Definitely not! These changes give Drupal 8 so many "wins" and new possibilities that you're going to absolutely love it. In this keynote, we'll explore the changes together and start to realize all of the wonderful things that each will bring. These include a (much) larger community, many more libraries you can use, higher quality tools, easier future upgrades, and some fantastic new features. And because Drupal uses Symfony, you'll easily be able to use Symfony (or its little brother Silex) for any non-CMS projects. Being a great Drupal 8 developer means being a great PHP developer. Of course, Drupal 8 has its criticisms: it will be too hard for new developers to learn, or it will not be useable for smaller sites. We'll take on these concerns directly and see why they are valid, but exaggerated.
