The Lafayette Parish School System is in need of renovations and replacements to address aging school facilities. Over 20 schools are over 50 years old with only minor repairs, and the newest high school is 42 years old. Many schools are overcrowded, with approximately 250 portable classrooms added. The 2010 Master Facilities Plan calls for $561 million in Phase I to replace and renovate several schools, add additions, and conduct maintenance over 6 years. Phase I is estimated to cost the average homeowner $23 in additional property taxes per year and would fund improvements to address aging infrastructure and overcrowding issues facing the school system.
