HISTORY • FROM “VD” TO “STD” OR “STI”. • Venereal comes from Venus, the goddess of love from the Greek mythology. • Medieval times: Syphilis and Gonorrhea two most prevalent STDs in Europe • 18th and 19th centuries : mercury, arsenic and sulphur was used to treat venereal diseases often resulting in serious side effects and many people then died of mercury poisoning.

HISTORY • First known effective treatment for syphilis Arsphenamine was introduced in 1910. • 20th century : Penicillin and other antibiotics led to an effective cure of bacterial STDs. • Late 20th century : Transmission of viral STDs such as HIV and Herpes arose,not curable and may be fatal in some cases.

ATA GLANCE • >340 million cases of STDs occur throughout the world each year. • In pregnancy untreated early syphilis causes 25% stillbirths and 40%% perinatal mortality. • Untreated Gonoccocal & Chlamydial infection leads to PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) in 40%. • 1 in 4 of these will result in infertility.

AT A GLANCE • Worldwide every year up to 4000 newborn babies become blind due to untreated maternal gonoccocal & chlamydial infections. • STDs are now ranked among the top 5 diseases for which adults seek health care services in the developing countries. • STDs affect men & women of all backgrounds & economic levels. Most prevalent among teenagers & young adults. Nearly two-thirds of all STDs occur in people younger than 25 years of age.
  6. 6. AT A GLANCE • STDs range in severity from pubic lice, which usually causes only discomfort. • New vaccines can stop death of approx. 240,000 women from cervical cancer each year.
  7. 7. CLASSIFICATION OF STIs There are many different types of sexually transmitted infections, which can be broken down into three basic types: • BACTERIAL: • Vaginitis • Chlamydia • Gonorrhea • Syphilis • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
  8. 8. CLASSIFICATION OF STIs • VIRAL: • Genital Herpes • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) or Genital Warts • Hepatitis B • Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) / Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) • PARASITIC: • Trichomonas

  11. 11. MODE OF TRANSMISSION Sexual contact with an infected person: • Vaginal. • Anal. • Oral. • Blood to blood contact. • Sharing needles or other drug use equipment. • Tatoo or body piercing. • Infected mother to her baby.
