1.- GaN versus GaAs
An interview with Chris Day, Senior Director of Engineering with TriQuint Semiconductor:
Why is Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology a good choice for node and distribution
amplifiers in HFC networks?
Amplifiers utilizing GaN technology offer higher RF output levels than today’s current GaAs-based
solutions. Higher RF output from amplifiers provides a number of substantial benefits that lower both the
operating and capital costs in HFC networks. While GaN does provide for an increase in RF output level,
it is a more expensive technology than GaAs.
What are some key differentiators of GaN compared to other transistor technology that
makes GaN so attractive?
Within any technology family, whether it’s GaN FETs, GaAs FETs or Silicon BJTs, there is a tradeoff
between how much voltage or power the device can handle and how much speed or bandwidth it can
deliver. Device designers have to trade off between how strong a device is (breakdown voltage), or how
fast they want to make the transistor. GaN technology provides valuable margin in this design dilemma -
it’s possible to make transistors stronger without compromising the speed or bandwidth.
What are the drawbacks to GaN?
GaN is a new technology and with any new technology in infrastructure applications there are risks. It’s
also more difficult to fabricate than GaAs technology, so we can expect it will always be more expensive
than GaAs. To get the benefit of GaN in a hybrid, it turns out that the gain is often compromised. So while
a GaN hybrid can put out more RF power, it doesn’t provide the companion gain. At the physics level,
GaN operates as a Field Effect Transistor (FET). A FET device will have more variability from device to
device, which means it is more challenging for designers to achieve good performance for increasingly
digital content. By contrast bipolar devices, such as Silicon BJT or GaAs HBT, operate based on different
physical properties, which are much more repeatable.
Why do you think the future of RF amplifier design is going to focus on GaN?
I think the performance of GaN will make it a clear choice for future RF amplifiers. It delivers on the key
performance metrics of breakdown and speed - but it is not the only choice. I think it’s better to say RF
amplifier design will focus on higher RF output and better efficiency - using whatever technology that
helps lower overall system cost.
In terms of cost, where does GaN make sense?
2. fam’s teleco news (7ªEd.) 2/7
I believe nodes are the first place for GaN-based hybrids. The high price of nodes today makes the higher
cost of GaN hybrids less of an overall contributor to equipment cost.
What about the use of linear, integrated GaAs or discrete GaAs solutions?
Better device technology is not the only tool available for achieving higher RF output and better efficiency.
There are design techniques - such as linearization - that the industry has already utilized in other parts of
the network that can be used to greater effect in RF amplifiers. Integrated GaAs solutions have potential
to provide both higher RF output and lower cost using proven technologies.
Is a hybrid design that combines GaN and GaAs die into modules or another combination
of device technologies a likely solution to maximize performance and minimize cost?
Absolutely. GaN technology by itself doesn’t make such a good solution. I believe the best performance
happens when the best of GaN is combined with the strengths of GaAs.
In terms of a combo GaN/GaAs hybrid, how would these devices be configured?
RF amplifiers use a familiar cascode topology, which is the combination of a strong device, such as GaN,
with a higher gain linear GaAs device. In essence the strong device carries the large voltage swing and
the GaAs device provides the gain. There are a wide range of GaAs devices to choose from to provide
linear gain.
What has been the response thus far to TriQuint's solutions from OEMs that supply cable
operators?
Quite good. TriQuint has participated in the CATV market for quite some time via its foundry business unit
and with standard products. With the acquisition of TriAccess Technologies a year ago, there is an
extended focus on providing product solutions to the market. Our strengths to date are in head-end
amplifiers for DOCSIS content distribution and client side applications like drop amplifiers and optical
receivers for FTTH and RFoG.

5.- Huawei Announces World's First Intelligent Optical Distribution Network
(iODN) Prototype
[Shenzhen, China, 15 October 2010] Huawei, a leader in providing next-generation telecommunications
network solutions for operators around the world, today announced the world's first Intelligent Optical
Distribution Network (iODN) prototype. Huawei's iODN offers multiple intelligence functions and enables
operators to automatically locate and operate target optical fibers, paving the way for massive fiber to the
home (FTTH) rollouts.
"FTTx networks are now being deployed on a massive scale all over the globe and ODN is garnering
more and more attention from operators worldwide. This new prototype, along with our expertise in end-
to-end ODN delivery, including planning and engineering, will pave the way for massive fiber to the home
rollouts," said Wang Dexiang, Director of Huawei's ODN Service Department.
The deployment of fiber to the x (FTTx) networks is increasing rapidly, with the number of optical fibers
being used growing exponentially. When working with optical networks, operators face two major issues:
the high error rate when optical fiber connection data is entered manually, and the low efficiency and
continuity constraints that occur when optical fibers are manually connected or optical faults are manually
identified and located.
Huawei's iODN prototype is able to address these challenges through intelligent optical fiber
management, including setup and management of optical fiber connections. Its innovative design
automates the identification and the collection of optical fiber connections and splitters, ensures that
optical faults are correctly located, improves maintenance efficiency, and simplifies and enhances
operation and maintenance efficiency.
Huawei's iODN prototype was announced at the P&T / Expo Comm China 2010 trade show in Beijing and
will be exhibited at the Broadband World Forum 2010 in Paris. As of August 2010, Huawei's ODN
offerings are used by many of the world's leading operators, including British Telecom, Etisalat, Nucleus
Connect, Maxis, Saudi Telecom Company, and Qatar Telecom

8.- Broadband Forum Technical Reports: TR-156 Using GPON Access in the
context of TR-101
Executive Summary
TR-101 provided an Ethernet-based architecture that has become a global standard for triple-play
deployments for residential and business customers that use DSL as the broadband access technology.
However, many of TR-101’s architecture specifications are access agnostic, and they are also being
widely used today with other access technologies, especially FTTx / PON.
This Technical Report strengthens the TR-101 requirements as applied to GPON by providing more
detailed and specific requirements. In order to reduce operational complexity and maximize equipment
interoperability, a subset of the GPON’s flexible configuration arrangements are specified here to facilitate
the implementation of TR-101’s VLAN architecture options. Other parts of this specification enable
providers to take full advantage of GPON’s abilities to achieve TR-101 requirements for multicast, Quality
of Service (QoS), OAM and NMS.
TR-156 Issue 2 broadens the applicability to include XG-PON1 support.
