FILM
POSTERS
Fallon Krampah
I wanted to examine the other romantic posters that were out there
and their main features. Looking into other blockbuster movie
posters, has allowed me to widen my understanding and creativity.
By also looking into other movie posters, it has also allowed me to
see what kind of images to capture of the actors, in the upcoming
photo-shoot, to make sure that I have enough resources to produce
what is most desirable.
As I looked into the Romantic films and advertisement, I found that
many of the posters included the main actors, which are the two
lovers, embracing or standing in a position showing one of the two
protagonists having clear dominance of the other. A hint of comedy is
often shown in the posters, in the way the actors are smiling and
laughing.
Also another thing that I have noticed is that the movie posters
throughout the years have changed from dramatic love and death to
love, comedy and reality.
I have selected a number of posters to analyse the different
components of the posters, and see whether there are any of the
features that I would like to use in my own poster.
THE BACK-UP PLAN
This is a movie poster, that I personally really like. Due to the fact
that it has a clean and clear finish.
This is something that I most defiantly would like to recreate.
The use of the two protagonists laughing indicates their joyful
love/relationship towards each other. Showing that they are
comfort towards each other.
The colour pink that has been used to not just brighten the image
up a little but to also imply a youthfulness that is taking part in the
two protagonists relationships.
The film title ‘The Back-up Plan’ has been made a reasonable font
size underneath the films slogan “Fall in love. Get married. Have a
baby. Not necessarily in that order.” This at first does suggest a
traditional biblical way of living and building a family. Through the
circles around the ‘Have a baby.’ point and arrow pointing upwards
it strongly connotates that perhaps the two protagonists are not
living the traditional biblical way of becoming one with each other
and building a family but are rather conveying a more secular
couple. This links in great with the film title, suggesting that the
protagonists were having a baby assumingly unexpectedly they
needed a ‘Back-up Plan’.
The credits below the film title are vital in every film poster as it
gives recognition to the different people that took part in the film.
It also lets the audience know of any other actresses/actors that
are part in the film that perhaps have not been mentioned before.
It is also important to include any distributers at the bottom of the
film posters, to give them recognition too. this is mainly done
through the companies logo being places at near the bottom of
the page. The website of the film has been included to make sure
that the audience who want to find out more information about
the film can go there and browse information on the film or even
watch the trailer on there.
Many film posters have a date of when the film will be released,
however this film poster has a simple ‘Coming Soon’ keeping it
simple and plain indicating that there will be more information
released about this film in the later future.
Love Happens
This poster as well has the two main actor and
actresses names at the top of the poster just
like the poster in the slide before.
The central image of the protagonist shows
them being intimate and in love.
Even though this is a very plain and simple film
poster is carries just enough depth for the film
it is presenting.
The slogan “sometimes when you least expect
it…” fits perfectly with the title “Love
Happens”. This can be read either way top to
bottom or bottom to top, which makes it a
great idea.
The colour white again emphasises the
simplicity of this poster.
At the bottom of the film there are all the legal
writings that have to be included in every
movie poster.
These texts are always in white and are hard ti
read.
This film poster has a very modern feel and
look to it. Already you can tell that it is a Rom-
com through the nice bright colours and the
gestures/poses of the two main protagonists,
suggesting a youthfulness and contemporary
side to them.
Once again their names have been placed
above their heads. This technique is often used
to show the audience the famous main actors
and actresses that are going to be involved in
the film
The line at the middle that has divided the two
protagonists suggests that in this film we are
going to see both sides of the story. Opening
up to a wider and larger target audience.
The images in general have a nice clean and
professional finish to them, which is often
found in studio photography. the release days
has been placed right next to the film title to
ensure that the audience sees this very easily
without having to struggle finding it on the
poster.
FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS
THE HOLIDAY
In this movie poster we see all four main actors and actresses
which is vital to every film poster.
The white strip helps to distinguish between the two couples
suggesting that in this film we are going to see two stories play at
part.
This time however, we do not see the actors/actresses names
above their heads but in the white strip. The names however,
were put in order of the actors/actresses appearing from left to
right top to bottom on the poster. Making it easier for the
audience to pin point who is who.
Inside the white strip we also see “a film by Nancy Meyers” who
we as the audience assume to be an important person who came
up with the plot of the story.
At the bottom of the film title we see the a statement that is not a
slogan but rather film titles, that suggesting a link between the
films and “the Holiday”. Showing that the same people who were
involved in producing those well known films were also behind the
production of “the Holiday”. This helps them gain more publicity
and recognition.
At the bottom of the film poster once again we see the legal
writing in a faint white text, however the month ‘December’ has
been placed there in a solid white colour and bold text to help It
stand out and tell us that the film is going to be released in
December.
Overall I have seen that many of the
romantic movie posters out there have a
lot in common. I have seen quite a few
features of these movie posters that I
personally very like and would like to
exploit in my own production of my movie
poster.
The repeating conventions ( i.e. legal text
at the bottom of the poster) on some of
the posters have most definitely given me
confirmation that I must include these in
my own film poster to give it a realistic
look to it.
