The document discusses the dominance of binary thinking in Western thought and its limitations in fully understanding complex phenomena. It argues that binary codes, while useful for simplifying communication, oversimplify the world by reducing all issues into polar opposites. To develop a more comprehensive understanding, the document calls for moving beyond binary thinking towards holistic thinking that considers relationships and systems as a whole rather than just the sum of parts. It discusses how several thinkers have advocated for holism to provide a more complete view of reality.

THE IMPERATIVE OF REVOLUTION IN HUMAN THOUGHT
Fernando Alcoforado *
Communication with others as well as communication with oneself, depends on the
encoding. All perception, as well as its evaluation depends on the encoding. It is this
which makes the environment thinkable and communicable. One of the most common
binary encoding is that can be called polar duplication rule. Whereas the phenomenon
(A) is not its opposite (B) or (C) but not (A). The opposite of being existing is not
another being but nothing. Following the binary code replicates the existence in non-
existence, the momentum in the absence of a pulse [See Article Caos e ordem na teoria
sociológica (Chaos and order in the sociological theory) of Franz Josef Brüseke posted
on the website <http://www.anpocs.org.br/
portal/publicacoes/rbcs_00_22/rbcs22_07.htm>).
According Brüseke, MS and Ph.D. in Sociology from the Westfälische Wilhelms
Universität Münster, Germany, the latter principle, successfully used by the computer,
lets you work with impressive speed, responding as a specific schedule, yes or no.
Computers are part of our lives since the second half of the twentieth century. How can
we make a machine understand our orders? Through a compiler, a program that
translates the sophisticated language the programmer (closer to human thinking) to a
binary "zero" and "one", which is how they think the electronic brains.
The binary code brings the advantage of reducing the complex to a minimum level of
information complexity, enables the creation of clear rules and eliminates reflection,
within the encrypted communication, no doubt. If someone did not act right, did wrong.
What is not behind the lead. What is left is not right. The complex world is divided thus
into East and West or North and South, free and not free, rich and poor. What for some
is the bourgeoisie and the proletariat, for others it is man and woman. Who runs away
from it all is at least one certainty: a theory is rational or irrational. The thinking in
opposites of this type, works with binary code to order the chaotic assault signals the
communicative system.
In the opinion of Brüseke, the binary scheme dissolves in minimum time, the most
complex phenomena in polar duplication. Moreover, it is, as a communication rule, easy
to understand, strengthen, because of its simple structure, the ability to act and decide.
This is what builds your success, if we measure this success with the criterion of
elimination. He is also responsible for their own inability to understand phenomena and
systems that do not have a binary structure. Overcoming binary code seems so difficult
as not achieve the degree of differentiation. The rational thinking of the Western type
seems to suffer paralysis, or become impossible under the polarization.
The history of Western thought is the history of struggle for understanding of complex
structures. In modern science of nature triumphed binary code. All communicative
systems of the world structure their communication with the support of the binary code.
Thus, the legal system works with justice and injustice code, the economy, referring to
the property, the code has not owning etc. Binary code is a specific way to simplify
reflection and human communication. However, we can also see that the theoretical
developments beyond, making it therefore more difficult to understand.
The dominance of the binary code over other forms of thought and communication is a
historical product. However, thinking in two dimensions renounces the possibility of

more comprehensive understanding of the world and the possibilities not yet realized it,
according Brüseke. In contrast to the binary code that prevails in our society urges the
introduction of holistic thinking. It should be noted that the term holism comes from the
Greek holos, meaning whole or all. It is the idea that the properties of a system cannot
be explained only by the sum of its components. It is also called non-reductionism, to be
the opposite of reductionism. It is a theory that establishes the world as an integrated
whole, as an organism.
We live in an era in which we must prepare a critical and reflective to the current reality
of human technological world. In this context, a progressive approach is feasible along
with teaching and research in a holistic perspective. It is understood by holistic, from
the Greek "holos", "total", a doctrine that emphasizes consideration of whole in an
attempt to explain reality. Although throughout history many thinkers have asserted, in
one form or another, the principle of holism, the first philosopher who instituted to
science was the Frenchman Auguste Comte, to establish the importance of the mind-set
(or synthesis) on the spirit of details (or analysis) for a proper understanding of science
itself and its value to the whole of science and human existence.
Holism is the rescue of the ethical dimension in the deepest sense. Consists of a
commitment to the whole, with the global, with humanity, with nature conservation and
the establishment of a revolutionary relationship between humans, animals and plants.
All elements are part of a large body. The holism brings a proposal for a full life. It is a
path that is not new, considering that finds support in the pre-Socratic thought. The
holism should be imposed because, in recent centuries, the Cartesian project in science
has been insufficient intended to break matter into ever smaller pieces, in the pursuit of
knowledge.
In 1973, Edgar Morin outlines new perspectives for the advancement of human thought.
This is a prelude to his major work: The method that will be developed for about thirty
years. The goal of "The Method" is to promote thought reform. A procedure of the spirit
which seeks to rearticulate what the specialist research separated. This does not mean
the promotion of a "holistic" thinking that would abolish the differences, but to resume
the challenge already proposed by Blaise Pascal: "I defend the idea that it is impossible
to understand the whole without understanding each party, as well as understand each
one of the parts without knowing the whole".
The method does not intend to search for a "philosopher's stone" designed to solve all
problems. Unlike the Discourse on Descartes Method, the Morin procedure refused, at
first, the idea of an ultimate truth, it would be possible to be achieved, and an absolutely
rigorous knowledge to be put into action. The idea of the unfinished, the uncertainty of
the relativity of knowledge is at the center of his thought. It is initially learn to
overcome the binary oppositions of nature / culture, individual / society, determinism /
freedom, subject / object.
