As presented by the chart above, overall 30 people had taken part within our survey; 10 male
and 20 female. The target audience for our film, “Visions”, is mainly aimed at female audience
therefore we ensured to have a higher number of female rather than males to participate in our
survey. This is in order to get a clear indication of what this gender requires in a film magazine
and which specific aspects attracts them into purchasing it.

What is the first thing you look for in a film poster?
Actors featured Colours used Distribution company Director of film Images used Other
Through this question, I aimed to find out what initial features draw in and spark interest amongst my target
audience. This is in order to use this information and incorporate similar features when creating my own film
poster. As conveyed by the image above, 13 participants stated that the actors featured on the film poster is the
first thing which they look for, making this the majority. A total of 10 participants also stated that the images used
on the film poster were a contributing factor in drawing them in. On the other hand, as shown within the data
above, the participants did not believe that the colours used, distribution company and the director films were
as important. Using this information, I will ensure that on my film poster, I display which actors will be featured
and also incorporate an attractive and effective image in order to draw in my target audience.

What colours do you think relate to the horror genre the most?
As displayed within the pie chart on the
left, 43% the participants within the survey
believed that colour black is the most
reflective of the horror genre, making this
the majority. This is followed by the
second most popular colour, red at 33%
and white at 10%. However, at joint last
place are the colours grey, blue, yellow
and other at 3%.
The participants stated that they believed
the colours black and red were more
reflective of the horror genre as they hold
connotations to themes such as danger,
blood and death which are conventions of
this genre.
I therefore will ensure to use a black, red
and white colour scheme when designing
my film poster in order to reflect the horror
genre to my audience.

Out of the film posters presented below, which do you most prefer?
The pie chart on the right demonstrates that the
majority of people which took part in the questionnaire
preferred ‘The Eye’, taking 67% of the votes. This is
followed by ‘Scream’ at 20% and ‘Friday the 13th’ in last
place at 13%.
The participants stated that they believed that ‘The Eye’
was most effective due to its unsettling and original
image as it intrigued interest. Also, the image used was
a direct representation of the film title, therefore giving
the audience an indication of what the plot of the film
will be based around.
The results for this question, worked in my favour as my
horror film is also based on a theme similar to ‘The Eye’
therefore I can use similar features present on the film
poster and mirror them onto my own.

Which type of typography should be utilised?

by 8 participants choosing ‘Bold’, 5 participants choosing ‘Sans-Serif’, 3 participants choosing

What sort of information would you like to see on a horror poster?
As reflected by the data above, 16 of the participants included in our questionnaire would like to see the
release date of the film displayed on a horror poster. This is followed by the age certification being second
most popular with 6 participants choosing it. Leaving 4 participants choosing the tagline of the film, 2
participants choosing the production company and lastly the name of actors and others at only 1.
