Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) is the process the U.S. Department of Defense uses to reorganize its military installations to adapt to changing circumstances.
The 2005 BRAC law will result in the transfer of 14,000-19,000 Department of Defense jobs to Fort Belvoir in September 2011

By this time we have all heard of BRAC – Base Realignment and Closure The 2005 law will result in the transfer of 14,000-19000 Department of Defense jobs to Fort Belvoir In response we have been vigorously planning for BRAC and a robust service plan to help alleviate some of the predict traffic congestion
This is a summary of the service plan. There will be a total of approximately 19,000 of new service and 9 new peak buses. The 159 will become a limit stop service using the REX stops. The 171 will be split into the 171/371 and frequency will be increased along Route 1 The 304 was scheduled for change, but that has been postponed until the construction is complete along the Fairfax County Parkway – the recommendation in the TDP is not feasible due to a change in the configuration of the parkway. i.e. eventually we will not be able to cross the parkway and head north though this route will be taken off it’s extended detour. The 305 will be a combination of the old 305 and 307 and run from Franconia-Springfield Metro to Lorton VRE. The 331 and 332 will become the 333/334. We are removing I-95 Circulator service from central Springfield and Loisdale Road north of Spring Mall Road. We are removing I-95 Circulator service from Backlick Road which will be served by proposed Route 371. The route provides a cross-I-95 connection via the Fairfax County Pkwy and will maintains service to NVCC-Springfield Medical College, Gateway 95, Boston Boulevard, and DLA-Ft. Belvoir. In short we are concentrating our resources to the south to provide a connection to DLA. The 380D will be renamed to the 395 and the Gambrill Road/Backlick P&R detours will become permanent.
Weekday peak-direction service on existing Route 159 would be changed from local service to limited-stop service. Route 159 provides northbound a.m. service from Engleside and Sequoyah to Huntington Station (south) and southbound p.m. service from Huntington Station (south) to Sequoyah and Engleside via Richmond Highway. Route 151 and 152 service will not be impacted; frequent local service along Richmond Highway will be maintained via enhanced Route 171 service.
Service in the Richmond Hwy corridor comprises approximately 25 percent of typical weekday boarding in the Fairfax Connector system. Route 171 is the busiest bus route in the Richmond Highway corridor and second busiest in the Fairfax Connector system. As you can see we are increasing the headway from 30 minutes to 20 minutes in the peak period, which mean there will be 3 buses per hour instead of 2.
Instead of cutting through this little neighborhood, we will coming out to Route 1. As you can see, the 171 starts at the Huntington Metro and truncated at the Lorton VRE.
Routes 333/334 are proposed to provide circulator service to the Loisdale Road, Newington, Gateway 95, Ft. Belvoir-DLA, and Boston Boulevard areas weekdays only. The routes are based off of restructured 331/332 existing circulator service (serving primarily east of I-95 and south of Central Springfield) to and from Metrorail at Franconia-Springfield Station on the north end of the route.
Route 305 is proposed to provide bi-directional service to the Newington Forest, Silverbrook, Laurel Hill and Lorton communities and Lorton VRE during weekday peak periods. The revised route is based of the combination of existing routes 305 and 307 and will provide Newington Forest, Silverbrook, and Laurel Hill riders with service options to Metrorail at Franconia-Springfield Station on the north end of the route or VRE at Lorton Station to the south. We are proposing providing service to the Lorton Valley HOA. The purpose is to provide a connection to the VRE and would serve this little neighborhood, southbound, toward the VRE in the AM and, northbound, from the VRE in the PM. The routing through the neighborhood would be: Lorton Road Westbound, left on to Windemere Hill Drive, Windemere Hill changes to 5 th Place, left on Middle Ruddings Drive, left on Sloway Coast Drive, left on Dixon Street, right on 5 th Place, changes to Windemere Hill Drive, right on Lorton Road.

Route 371 is proposed to provide bi-directional service to Patriot Ridge, Fullerton Road, Saratoga Center, Lorton VRE, Laurel Hill, and Lorton. Route 371 is proposed to serve the southern/Lorton portion of existing Route 171 with service to and from Metrorail at Franconia-Springfield Station on the north end of the route.
