Your Best Camera Just
Might Be in Your Pocket
Orientation
I cannot stress this enough. Video is landscape, if you shoot with your
phone in the portrait orientation, when folks watch your video, it will
appear as a thin vertical sliver in the middle of a giant horizontal black
rectangle.
*If you only remember one rule, this is it!
Always landscape
Never portrait
Resolution
Most smartphones today have cameras that can
shoot HD video. At the Nashville office we work in
1080P, so if your phone is capable of 1080P, that
would be awesomely awesome.
720P is okay too, but if the resolution gets any lower,
it will stand out in a bad way.
Resolution: iPhone
iOS7 always shoots at the highest video resolution
available to your device. There are no settings to adjust.
■ The 5s, 5c and 4s all shoot 1080P, while the 4 shoots
720P.
■ If you have to use the front facing camera, do it only
on the 5s and 5c, since their FaceTime cameras
shoot 720P.
Resolution: Android
Because of the diversity of Android implementations on the market, I’m
going to focus on the official Google Camera app (Available for free on
the Play Store for any device running Android 4.4 or higher).
■ In the camera app, swipe from left to right to reveal the menu of
camera options.
■ Tap the gear that appears in the bottom right to bring up camera
settings.
■ Under “General Settings,” tap “Resolution & Quality”
■ Set the “Back Camera” resolution to 1080P
■ If you can set your “Front Camera” to 720P or higher, you may use
the front facing camera.
Storage
Make sure you have enough space on your phone to shoot.
■ iOS go to Settings>General>Usage to see how much space you
have available.
■ Android go to Settings>Storage to see how much space you
have available.
If you are running low, back up your photos and video to your
computer, or to a cloud service like dropbox, or Google+ then delete
them from your phone.
Talking Heads
So you’re shooting a
testimony, or you’re giving us
an update. Awesome! Here are
a few tips to get the best
possible quality with your
smartphone.
Talking Heads: Location
Face it, the microphone on your camera phone is not good. That in addition to other
factors limits where we can shoot.
■ Avoid echoey rooms, crowded places, anywhere near a busy loading dock--noisy
places in general.
■ If you shoot outdoors, make sure it isn’t too windy, or near heavy traffic, or an
airport--again noisy places in general.
■ Make sure the light isn’t behind you. Don’t shoot standing in front of a window for
instance, or silhouetted by the sun.
■ If possible, find as interesting a backdrop as possible. Whether that’s in your
library, or in front of your building, or in front of a map or even a brick wall.
■ If you’re going for a blank, minimal aesthetic, try to keep it blank. Nothing ruins a
shot against a solid background than an errant thermostat or doorstop.
Talking Heads: Framing
Your phone’s camera is
capable of decent audio,
you just need to be
relatively close to it. We
recommend a medium shot
like this:
Talking Heads: Be Prepared
It is difficult to near impossible to make up for
unpreparedness in editing. Have a succinct 60
seconds rehearsed and ready. Trust us, when the
camera is running, all your natural instincts will
suddenly disappear, and you’ll be glad you didn’t just
wing it. Having your message prepared in advance will
actually help you be natural on camera.
Talking Heads: Talking Points
■ General greeting, since our target audience is EN churches in
North America (i.e. “Greetings from <Church Name> in <Church
City>”).
■ Successes and updates. We want to encourage those who have
partnered with the 2020 North American Church-Planting
Initiative and bring the joy that comes with knowing that God is
growing the seed they helped to plant.
■ Talk about the 2020 North American Church-Planting Initiative
and its impact on your ministry and for church plants to come.
Action Shots
Now depending on what you choose to talk about in
your update, these shots may vary, but here are few
general suggestions that would be really great to
have.
Action Shots: Establishing
Whatever successes you
mention, whether it’s a meeting
location, or a coffee house, or
college campus, we need a wide
establishing shot of all locations.
Action Shots: Church Service
■ Shots of attendees in worship. The more diverse
the better.
■ Worship team shots. Singers, Band, Tech Crew,
etc.
■ Attendees praying, taking notes, etc.
■ Shots of you preaching.
■ Children’s ministry, or youth ministry (if
applicable)
You can never have too much footage.
Action Shots: Outreach
Anything else you mention, make
sure someone is going out getting
footage with their smartphone at
these important moments.
And make sure they’ve read this
presentation.
Accessories
There are a lot of products to enhance
your smartphone shooting experience,
ranging in price from DIY to DSLR. If you
don’t know someone with a steady hand
do a google search for your smartphone
+ “Stabilizer.” Personally I’d opt for a
friend with steady hands, like Mikey
here.
I can pretty much work with any cloud, or file sharing
solution you like the most. Dropbox, Google Drive,
Hightail, etc. For all of these options you can upload them
directly from your phone, or if you prefer, transfer it all to
your computer and upload it from there.
Either way, when you’re ready, shoot an email to
jay.kim@everynation.org
Happy shooting!
