1. Cry of the Soul
By Dr. Dan B. Alexander & Dr. Tremper Longman III
Chapter 1-3
2. Chapter 1 Emotions: The Cry of the Soul
• Emotions link our internal and external worlds (20)
• A failure to feel leaves us barren and distant from God and others
(20)
• Its difficult for us to feel because it can open the door of reality
about our situation whether its positive or negative (21)
• Emotions are the language of the soul. They are the cry that gives
the heart a voice (26).
• Listening is the first step toward altering destructive emotions. i.e.
Are you pursuing God? (27)
3. Chapter 2 The Psalms: The Voice of the Soul
• No section of the Bible teaches us the language of the soul better
then the Psalms, which reflect the movement of the human heart in
rich, evocative, and startling language. (31)
• The Psalms teach us how to praise and worship (31).
• They also teach us how to wrestle with doubt… (31).
• The Psalms provoke us to move out of denial (32).
• Psalms of joy and praise are in less number then Psalms of
complaint, accusation, confusion, doubt heartache (32)
• They also compel us to look beyond our surface tumult, deeper
into our soul and into our battle with God (32).
• The Psalms help us realize that every emotion is a theological
statement (34)
• All dark emotions are tied with our wanting to “flight” response
since Eden, and our “fight” response is to regain access back into
4. Chapter 3 Relationships: The Context of the Cry
•Every person lives a unique story, composed of
moments of great joy and tragic pain (42).
•All our emotions find their final object focus in Him
(43).
•Our feelings are provoked when people relate to
us in three ways(44-50):
•They move against us: attack
•Anger- propels us into battle
•Fear: causes us to flee
•They move away from us: abandonment
•Jealousy
