Past simple
1. PAST SIMPLE
•It is used to talk about events in the past
•It is often used to tell stories
2. EXAMPLE:
Peter arrived at Manchester
Airport and checked in.
He waited for the plane.
When he landed in Milan, he
traveled by bus to the hotel…
3. FORM:
For regular verbs we add –ed to the
infinitive form of the verb.
Example: landed walked
watched waited
4. REGULAR VERBS: SPELLING
Verbs ending in –e, just add –d.
race – raced trade - traded
Verbs eding in consonant + y, change y to
i and add –ed
bury – buried try – tried
Verbs ending with a single vowel +
consonant, double the final consonant and
add –ed when the stress is on final vowel.
plane – planned prefer - preferred
6. IRREGULAR VERBS
For irregular verbs, there are no rules.
Each irregular verb has its own past simple,
and they have to be learned by heart
see – saw go – went
buy – bought meet – met
read – read do – did
7. INTERROGATIVE AND NEGATIVE FORMS
We form the interrogative and negative forms
of the past simple using the auxiliary do in
the past: did and the infinitive without “to”.
She went outside
Did she go outside?
She didn’t go outside.
