Why eportfolios often fail: Neglecting student and teacher needs
1. If we want our implementation of an eportfolio to fail we should definitely:
Make the students fit the system we select
Needs a PC to work – not Macs, iPads or mobiles (Doesn’t support core technologies)
No thought, no preparation, and mandate use
No support or training. Everyone will know how to use it and why.
Create firewall issues – on campus only with no bandwidth allowed!
Don’t tell IT people
Jump when the VC says so without any background knowledge
Change system after one year – ensure no continuity
Don’t allocate resources, time, money, training resources etc
Don’t include in strategic plans
Only one area of an institution using a particular system.
Don’t define business rules or policy
Confuse with the LMS - don’t define where the system sits
Roll out on a massive scale in a complex way
Text based only
Self sign up for accounts – don’t tell them how to find it
Make it unit level only
As a teacher dive straight in without support, assistance or guidance
The student will be OK - don’t bother talking to them
1 tutor for 400 students – it is all online therefore easy to mark
Don’t give feed back
Make it only private - no sharing or discussing things
Use everything in the system with the first group
Very structured no personalisation allowed
Don’t embed in the curriculum
Lock them in! No transfer - single purpose
Only trial with confident students
