This workshop will provide a brief survey of how the evolving theory and practice of using contemporary technology and technology-assisted research methods are impacting scholarship in the arts and humanities.

Participatory research, that is when people who are not employed as scientists do research – on their own, in groups and potentially in cooperation with people who are employed as scientists. There are many different methodologies and approaches to participatory research, for instance DIY science, Community-based Research, Participatory Action Research and Citizen Science. Such concepts are not often considered in discussions on Open Science, which are usually focussing on developments within scientific institutions. In my talk I will argue that it is important to extend the idea of Open Science beyond academia by considering another shade of openness – openness for participation of volunteers and cooperations with civil society organisations. With a focus on Citizen Science, I will introduce a pluralistic concept of participatory research, highlight current developments and discuss challenges of this growing field of practice in Europe.

These typologies do no explicitly examine learning. At the same time, projects and activities striving to fulfil multiple goals (excellent scientific output, satisfying engagement, good recruitment, learning …). Within ythe range of citizen science project, we can consider different aspects of learning that are occurring in them, Projects and use examples from a range of project, and raise some aspects that can help those who are designing co-created projects.

Data Science is described as the process of knowledge extraction from large data sets by means of scientific methods. The discipline draws heavily from techniques and theories from many fields, which are jointly used to furthermore develop information retrieval on structured or unstructured very large datasets. While the term Data Science was already coined in 1960, the current perception of this field places is still in the first section of the hype cycle according to Gartner, being well en route from the technology trigger stage to the peak of inflated expectations. In our view the future development of Data Science could benefit from the analysis of experiences from related evolutionary processes. One predecessor is the area of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The intrinsic scope of GIS is the integration and storage of spatial information from often heterogeneous sources, data analysis, sharing of reconstructed or aggregated results in visual form or via data transfer. GIS is successfully applied to process and analyse spatially referenced content in a wide and still expanding range of science areas, spanning from human and social sciences like archeology, politics and architecture to environmental and geoscientific applications, even including planetology. This paper presents proven patterns for innovation and organisation derived from the evolution of GIS, which can be ported to Data Science. Within the GIS landscape, three strategic interacting tiers can be denoted: i) Standardisation, ii) applications based on closed-source software, without the option of access to and analysis of the implemented algorithms, and iii) Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) based on freely accessible program code enabling analysis, education and ,improvement by everyone. This paper focuses on patterns gained from the synthesis of three decades of FOSS development. We identified best-practices which evolved from long term FOSS projects, describe the role of community-driven global umbrella organisations such as OSGeo, as well as the standardization of innovative services. The main driver is the acknowledgement of a meritocratic attitude. These patterns follow evolutionary processes of establishing and maintaining a web-based democratic culture spawning new kinds of communication and projects. This culture transcends the established compartmentation and stratification of science by creating mutual benefits for the participants, irrespective of their respective research interest and standing. Zooniverse (https://www.zooniverse.org/) is a world-leading academic crowdsourcing organization based at the University of Oxford, the Adler Planetarium and the University of Minnesota. This talk will provide an overview of the types of metadata extraction and full text transcription projects and tools that are currently available on the platform. It will give an overview of the design and lessons learned from projects such as Operation War Diary, Science Gossip, Shakespeare’s World and Measuring the ANZACs, and suggest ways in which crowdsourced data can be used in the humanities. The talk will also provide an overview of the free Project Builder (https://www.zooniverse.org/lab), where anyone with an internet connection can create their own project and obtain their own data.

Biodiversity data is extremely approachable – the concept of a specimen existing in time and place is clear to grasp and interesting to a wide range of people. I exploited this inherent feature of Biodiversity data to create an educational framework for teaching undergraduate Data Science. The project utilized Discovery Learning theory, based in the belief that it is best for learners to discover facts and relationships for themselves. Students were given a choice of databases and were mentored through an entire data analysis pipeline, including gathering, cleaning, analyzing, and visualization of the data. Their work culminates into a tutorial posted online (curiositydata.org) – instilling proper documentation, open science, and data management techniques. These tutorials can then be used and remixed as documentation for the databases, curriculum, and workshops detailing how to access and analyze the databases data. Increased documentation will overcome accessibility challenges that plague many Biodiversity databases, in an overarching aim to increase the usage and in turn value of these vital data resources. Computer Science, Statistics, and Biology undergraduates are increasingly “data literate”, and if mentored properly, we can foster a symbiotic relationship between the real-world Data Science education and the increase of usability of Biodiversity databases.
