8. “The space is important, it gives
young people a safe space to be.
In Westwood there is so little
space and places where young
people can just be. They can’t
seem to escape it [Westwood]”.
“some people they are doing
this [work with young people]
willingly but that is not
everyone’s view. This is not
what we trained for”.
“We do get complaints from adults.
People [adults] have a traditional
idea about what a library represents.
For many customers, it is place of
quiet, a place to read. That idea is
unrealistic for a community branch.
We need to adapt to the community
we are working in”.

10. Absolutely love it, it’s … a lovely
way to meet other mums, it’s a
really nice social thing as well,
children benefit from singing, and
the enthusiasm from the staff

11. [In the library] yes, there will be a collection
of people all trying to ignore each other
saying, 'We're not really homeless; we're just
sitting here reading a book'. (service user)
I usually go to the library. Get in, sit and read ….
You've just got to fill your time. It's hard because it
is a long day because you can't get in to the
shelters until half nine at night. So that's like 14
hours to fill.
Today I was in the library: I sent my CV to
companies, asking the company about more
information. There are loads of us there.
