3. A national coeducational service fraternity,
Alpha Phi Omega was founded in 1925 by
United States Navy veteran Frank Reed
Horton. Mr. Horton had served in World War I
and, backed by his studies at Boston
University Law School, had been assigned to
hear court martial cases against others in his
division. This experience led him to reflect on
the need for America's youth to develop
strong values and learn what it meant to be a
responsible adult member of society.
4. After his service ended, he enrolled in Lafayette
College. Through friends he met there, he
became involved in scouting and encountered the
codes of behavior laid out in the Scout Law and
Scout Oath. Inspired by the tenets of service,
leadership, and responsibility that formed the
basis of scouting, he created a Greek
organization that would embody the same
values. Alpha Phi Omega was thus born and has
since developed into a nationwide organization
with partnerships abroad.
