The document discusses how the author's music video fits conventions of the pop genre. It compares shots, editing techniques, and camera movements in their video to other pop music videos as examples. Typical pop conventions shown include showing the background of a scene while keeping focus on the artist, and having lyrics appear in the video, usually in the chorus. The author aimed to take inspiration from similar pop videos to give their video a professional pop look while avoiding extremes that could be controversial. They focused on the artist as the main element, connecting to Goodwin's "star theory" about music videos being based around the star.

Question one. A2 evaluation
1. Question one
In what ways does your media product use, develop
or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
2. My music video fits under the genre of pop, you can see this when I compare Alex and I’s
music video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx6OLqu5vrQ to other pop music videos
such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=29GWMT0GB6s and
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaKr9gWqwl4 There is some very similar shots,
editing techniques and camera movements which shows that Alex and I’s music video has
the same typical pop conventions which they also have in their pop music video. This is
demonstrated in the screen grabs below.
All of these show a similar pop convention which occurs in the pop genre music video
which is, showing the background of the scene to highlight the location but still keeps
focus on the main artist or people who are involved. This is a shot type that would
appear in a pop genre music video because it would appel to the audience since the
position of the shot reveals what fashionable clothes that the artist is wearing, this is
what young teenagers my take their fashion inspiration from, this is one need of the
audience of a pop music video met.
3. The typical pop conventions which appear in that genre music video is listed on the
PowerPoint below.

Having the lyrics appear in the video is a very poplar convention that happens in many pop
music videos. They use this technique to make the lyrics stand out the audience, this is
normally used in the chorus or at the start or end of the video. We used it in our music
video in the chorus since this is when most people are going to sing along. We also used the
bright writing to make it stand out in contrast to the background, the writing on the other
two pictures also has the same affects.
Over all we felt that it was important to take inspiration from similar pop videos since we
wanted our video to have the same professional pop look. Most of the pop videos follow
these conventions since they know the type of people who watch music videos will enjoy
them. However some videos try to go away from these conventions or take them to the
extremes to make them stand out and potentially go viral. Such as a pop convention is having
a women sexualised, blurred lines took this to the extreme by having three naked women in
the video. We avoided going to any extremes in our music video since we wanted to ‘play it
safe 'and fit the pop genre. This avoided any contrcial sterotypes which would stop anyone
feeling offended.
4. In a pop music video the artist is usually the main focus, this is described in
Goodwin's star theory. This is a theory which highlights particular elements of a
music video to show the music video is based on the star. We was inspired by this
theory since it links with the pop genre and will work very well for our target
audience. Below is a mind map of the elements which pop music videos uses and it
links it to the star theory, we used this mind map to get shot ideas, how to lay out
the mis-en-scene and how to use the camera to our advantage. There is also a
prezi below which explains in more detail what star theory is.

These two shots link with the star theory
because it feeds one of the audience needs
which is seeing the artist. Both pictures
demonstrate this by having the main star in the
middle of the shot taking over three quarters of
the screen and the lighting focused on them.
