3. The National American Woman
Suffrage Association (NAWSA)
• The National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) was an American women's
rights organization formed in May 1890 as a unification of the National Woman Suffrage
Association (NWSA) and the American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA).
• The NAWSA was the largest and most important suffrage organization in the United States, and
was the primary promoter of women's right to vote.
• The NAWSA pushed for a constitutional amendment guaranteeing women's voting rights, and
was instrumental in winning the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States
Constitution in 1920.

5. The leader of the Women's Suffragette
movement, Mrs. Emmeline Pankhurst is
arrested by Superintendant Rolfe outside
Buckingham Palace, London while trying
to present a petition to HM King George
V in May 1914.
In 1910, Pankhurst led a march on
Parliament of more than 300 women.
They were met with an aggressive and
violent police response - ordered by
then-home secretary Winston Churchill -
in which officers punched protesters and
"pulled on women's breasts"
6. • The Representation of the People in
1918 extended the vote to all men
over 21 and women over 30 who
were property owners or graduates
voting in a 'university constituency.‘
• The difference between men and
women in this law was introduced to
prevent men becoming an electoral
minority following the huge loss of
life in the Great War.
7. Ratification Of The Nineteenth
Amendment
• On August 18, 1920, the
Tennessee legislature narrowly
approved the 19th Amendment.
On August 31, the Tennessee
House of Representatives voted
to rescind their previous vote,
but the U.S. Secretary of State
had already proclaimed the
amendment ratified on August
26.
• Women’s right to vote was
achieved through the national
and local efforts of both the
NAWSA and the NWP.
