Tightening budgets, increasing terror threats and need for real time detection and response is changing the way physical security is done. The proprietary systems are being replaced by open standards based system which make them interoperable. The different organizations and control centers are now beginning to talk to each other and correlate information. The processes are getting automated which make monitoring easier and less prone to human error. With globalization, where organizations have facilities dispersed across borders, this simplification is leading to consolidation of control centers to central locations. This results in tremendous savings of facilities and personnel. This also help is disaster recovery and business continuity as one facility goes down the other facility located at a totally different location can take over the control remotely and mange the operations and recovery. An important change underway is also the convergence of network security with physical security. With more and more physical security devices getting network enabled, a secure network infrastructure becomes utmost important. Cisco has a well establish architecture for secure borderless network which provides anytime anywhere access of information securely. The network is protected by cisco’s leading network security technologies such as ASA Firewall, IPS etc. The inter linkages with the network security and infrastructure are also visible in the way videos are being stored now in the datacenter or in the cloud for anytime, anywhere access. Physical security can now be offered as a service where in the customers need not make upfront capex investments, they can chose to pay as they grow
Today, every community in the world faces ever-increasing threats of natural calamities and man-made disasters. No one is immune and far too often these threats lead to unpredictable and tragic events with catastrophic impact on our lives, property and sense of well-being. Recent examples include the Mumbai Terror Attack, Hurricane Katrina, the London Bombing, 911, the San Diego Fires, the Virginia Tech tragedy, the Haiti Earthquake, and more. What is becoming increasingly relevant is that these events cause ripple effects in communities all over the world, and within communities they shine a bright light on shortcomings of effectively dealing with these events. A terrorist event in Mumbai, India affects the daily lives of people in Holyoke, Massachusetts. A shooting on the campus of a local university takes over 4 hours to neutralize and several are killed or wounded in the process. How is this possible and more important, what can communities do to ensure their citizens, employees and critical infrastructure are safe and secure. Severity of incidents can be divided into domains ranging from a local and unintentional event like a minor accident to a large scale national/international event like an earthquake. The needs are multiple varying from securing transport systems, mass events and venues, prisons, education campuses etc. All these domains are disparate in terms of the scale, severity and impact to populations. A common architectural framework can help address all these domains in a consistent manner which can scale from local to international by the way of networking. This is where Cisco adds value to its customers, citizens , governments etc.
An “architectural” approach to safety and security begins with the network. Use cases will determine what technologies need to connect, but the underlying network infrastructure should always remain consistent. Network design should be “borderless” so that the user experience is transparent whether they are tethered to a workstation in a Security Operations Center, moving in a vehicle, or roving around a city campus. That infrastructure should ensure secure and reliable communications and also provide a level of scalability that accommodates growth as the community expands. That infrastructure should also be shared so that the variety of services communities can provide are enhanced and cost-reduced because of the common infrastructure. In essence, the network enables technologies to peacefully interact, not just as a path for data, but as a platform for interoperability
All this complexity and new trends are best handled by a connected and architecture based safety and security system that can address the domains and trends highlighted above. Below are the advantages unique to Cisco in this safety and security domain - Industry leading Open & IT Standards Platform Interoperable with existing systems and applications Security applications tightly integrated within the networkCommon software and hardware to support fixed and mobile environments Modular web-centric architecture and componentsCisco Networking ExpertiseAll the various components ranging from collaboration, radio, video, surveillance, access control are network based. The network for most part is cisco and so who better than Cisco to provide a truly scalable, interoperable security solution.
