Introduction <ul><li>The idea of a telecentre network has been a common initiative in many emerging regions in a try to address the digital divide and clearing the disparities between urban and rural areas </li></ul><ul><li>In Sri Lanka some telecentres in the Nenasala network </li></ul><ul><li>are situated in semi-rural areas like Kirindiwela/Gampaha </li></ul>
  4. 4. Aim of the Study <ul><li>This paper exhibits on-going, empirical research on telecentres focusing upon learning and education form a gender perspective in semi-rural Sri Lanka. The theory to a larger extent is based upon our own previous research. Two papers have been presented at earlier eIndia conferences (2009 & 2010) </li></ul>
  5. 5. Learning Modes <ul><li>Different ways of learning: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Formal learning </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Non-formal learning </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Informal learning </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Lifelong learning </li></ul></ul>
  6. 6. Lifelong learning <ul><li>“ Teachers must be aware of how to support children so they </li></ul><ul><li>can develop a desire for lifelong learning.” (Wanzare, 2002) </li></ul>
  7. 7. Technology Enhanced Learning <ul><li>The operators use ICT as an aid and a complement to teachers rather than fully rely on that ICT could replace the teachers </li></ul>
  8. 8. Outcomes of the Study <ul><li>The student learns non-formally in the telecentre, teaches their parents informally, and brings her/his knowledge into the formal class room </li></ul><ul><li>This is a combination of all the three learning forms discussed in our article </li></ul><ul><li>The study shows that these three forms of learning can fruitfully be combined in lifelong learning </li></ul>

Outcomes of the Study <ul><li>Managers believe that there are no real differences based on gender </li></ul><ul><li>We state there are, although they are not as obvious as in other countries that we earlier have studied </li></ul><ul><li>Women prefer basic training </li></ul><ul><li>Men prefer training connected to their profession </li></ul>

Our Recommendations <ul><li>A network of telecentres should also include the semi-rural areas of a country </li></ul><ul><li>More attention should be paid to the analysis of formal education to understand more in detail why several children found the telecentres even more important than the formal learning based on the national curriculum </li></ul>
