It is not new to say that the scholarly communication system is sick. One way to put it is that the publishers have built a paywall around the papers written by our faculty and make us librarians pay for it. For years, Open Access via the green and gold route have been touted as a joint solution. To this end, as academic librarians, we focused on building institutional repositories and getting open access mandates. However, recently, many prominent members of the open access community have begun to express doubts about the viability of institutional repositories as a solution given the lack of success. Some, like Stevan Harnad self-dubbed “Open Access Archivangelist” for Green Open access, claim to have given up, while others, like Eric Van de Velde, suggest that we rethink other ways to accomplish Green Open access beyond just institutional repositories. In this webinar, we will summarise all the arguments and attempt to give a librarian’s point of view about the future of IRs.

Slides accompanying a presentation given by Dan Gillean on June 7th, 2018 at Open Repositories 2018, held in Bozeman, MT. Access to Memory is a web-based open source application for standards based description and access. AtoM was first released in 2008 and much of the codebase is now relying on deprecated frameworks and libraries – and at the same time, new standards and technologies are changing how our profession approaches description and access. Currently Artefactual Systems, a Canadian based company, uses a services model to support the project. Artefactual is looking ahead to AtoM3, and considering building a linked data driven platform for archival description and access. As we consider AtoM's next generation, we are also examining governance and maintenance models to sustain the project and better empower our user community as Artefactual wasn't originally intended to be AtoM's organizational home. This presentation will offer some thoughts on existing open source project governance models, challenges, and possibilities for the future. Synopsis: Biological research increasingly depends on computational analysis of large and complex data sets. These slides were used in a one-hour webinar that provided a comprehensive look at platforms, tools, and services for large-scale data analysis provided by CyVerse, a cyberinfrastructure (CI) project of the US National Science Foundation. The webinar is available at https://youtu.be/QErkkoDFdyU. The webinar was aimed at viewers interested in the compute and platform architecture of Cyverse. It introduced the basic components of CyVerse CI including the Discovery Environment (a simple web portal for managing data, analyses and workflows); the Data Store (scalable, secure, and reliable storage for terabyte-scale data management); Atmosphere (one-click, on-demand cloud computing); and the Visual and Interactive Computing Environment (flexible implementations of Jupyter Labs, Rstudio, and R Shiny). CyVerse provides a full stack of CI services with entry points for computational novices and software developers. All resources are freely available to the community and free accounts can be obtained at user.cyverse.org. Retrieval augmented generation (RAG) is the most popular style of large language model application to emerge from 2023. The most basic style of RAG works by vectorizing your data and injecting it into a vector database like Milvus for retrieval to augment the text output generated by an LLM. This is just the beginning. One of the ways that we can extend RAG, and extend AI, is through multilingual use cases. Typical RAG is done in English using embedding models that are trained in English. In this talk, we’ll explore how RAG could work in languages other than English. We’ll explore French, Chinese, and Polish.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
