Lighting 1 Key Light – The most important light, the anchor light, the light on which the exposure is based. 2 Fill Light – The light used to “fill in” shadow, or reduce the lighting ratio, by definition no brighter than the key. 3 Backlight – A light that illuminates the subject from roughly the opposite side of the subject from the camera. Sometimes referred to as a hair light. • Kicker – A light used to accent the edge of a subject or object, usually brighter or of a different color temperature than the key light • Background Light – A light used to illuminate the background behind the subject.
