COMPANY BACKGROUND
MasBiru Sdn. Bhd. or D’Masbiru PLT is a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)
company which “is an alternative business vehicle regulated under the Limited Liability
Partnerships Act 2012 which combines the characteristics of a company and a conventional
partnership” (SSM, 2016). MasBiru Sdn. Bhd. was started in 1994 by the late Haji Jalani Bin
Amit along with his wife, Hajah Zabedah Binti Hitam under the name, Masbiru Enterprise. In
March 2013, the company was converted to a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) company
with the purpose to update company’s regulation and to improve the company’s business
from a normal restaurant to a complete catering service.
MasBiru Sdn. Bhd. owns a business named Zabedah Hitam Restaurant & Catering
based in Merlimau, Melaka. It is a food & beverages business which provides both dine-in
restaurant and catering services on special occasions. Currently, it has adequate facilities and
systematic cooking area to cook for up to 8000 people at one time. It has more than 150 staffs
including the full time and part time workers which have been trained and monitored very
well. The catering business can covers all type of events from a formal occasions to a casual
event, either in a hall, canopy or a stall in the garden concepts, family days, picnic or even a
cultural events. The business can attend all orders from all over Melaka to Tampin,
Gemencheh and also Muar.

To become a number one well-known catering company who provides its services
professionally with reasonable prices in Melaka.

A) WHAT IS THE COMPANY’S COMPETITIVE STRATEGY?
As Vitez (n.d.) stated that “A competitive advantage allows a company to produce or sell
goods more effectively than another business. Business owners commonly develop business
strategies in order to maintain a competitive advantage” (p 1). Based on our analysis, Mas
Biru Sdn. Bhd. used two type of company competitive strategy which are differentiation, and
price strategy.
Differentiation
MasBiru Sdn. Bhd. used competitive business strategies to differentiate their services
from others catering business competitors in Malacca in terms of administration, product and
services. The company image is more towards the corporate style and they applies the
computerized system to record the database as known as SQL Financial System. In the SQL
System, the company records data such as quotation, invoice, sales order and official receipts.
Next, in terms of product and services, the company offers “nasi arab” in their catering
package while the other competitors in Malacca area. Usually caterers offers “nasi beriani”
and “nasi minyak”.
Price Strategy
In price strategy, MasBiru Sdn. Bhd. used economy and promotional strategies to
maintain a competitive advantages. In economy strategy, they offer 4 type of package with
affordable price starting at RM 10.00 per pax, RM 12.90 per pax, RM 15.50 per pax and RM
30.00 per pax. Usually MasBiru Sdn. Bhd. make promotional price during Independent Day,
Eid Fitri,Ramadhan and the latest one year end sale. Promotional pricing strategies may
allow them to offer additional benefits to customers, such as during holy month Ramadhan,
they include open house package and combo set. Furthermore, for year-end sale, MasBiru

Sdn. Bhd. offer a lucky draw offering a reward in the form of a set of home appliances.
Besides, they also offer discount 3% until 10% for the first 10 customers.
B) ANALYZE HOW DOES THE COMPANY’S HRM PRACTICES CONTRIBUTE
TO THE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES OF THE COMPANY.
Masbiru Sdn Bhd recruits employees with experience, skills and has potential to perform
better in the future date. As the first catering company in Malacca who implements a
corporate style, Masbiru Sdn Bhd wants their employees to fit into their organization and can
give the best for the company. The first criteria when they want to recruit employees, is based
on their work experience, and then they will look at the academic records and also the skills
possessed by the candidates as the next important criterias. The company usually recruits
based on the job vacancy needed for the organization. For example, if the company needs a
clerk, they will select the candidate that has experience working in data collection, filing
system and data analysis. However, the company may not giving any tests to the employees
during the interview, but they will hire the candidate based on the impression during the
interview session whether they can answer the questions asked by the interview panels
flawlessly.
Human resource (HR) department is given the power to hire the potential candidates by
the leader. If they see any opportunities where the employees are in urgent need at the
company, they will find methods to advertise the jobs to the public to gain the attention of the
job seekers. The basic job advertising made by the HR department in this company is hanging
a banner on the job vacancy at the high-visibility areas. Besides, they also advertise the
vacancy jobs online at Mudah.my and JobStreet. Another example is, HR department in
Masbiru Sdn Bhd was once participated as one of the exhibitors for Career Fair located at

MITC Malacca on last 6th
of August 2016. There are 99 exhibitors who participated in this
fair, where they are the only catering company who joined the fair. The purpose of the HR
department wanted to join the fair is because they want to recruit more of the workers to
work under the Operation Department and F&B (Food and Beverage) Department. The
outcome from this career fair is the company got more than 200 applicants who are interested
to become one of their organization members.
After hiring the employees, the HR staff in Masbiru Sdn Bhd will provide a quick training
to the employees according to their department by assigning them a temporary supervisor and
to work under their supervisor for three (3) months trial. During these months, the employees
will be assigned a customer and they have to monitor this customer under the supervision of
the manager, to make them see the flow of their job. For example, a new sales consultant who
has been hired will be assigned a customer who will be married in 3 months time. In this 3
months, this sale consultant needs to monitor the preparation for this customer’s wedding and
need to prepare the quotation, layout, and to update any changes made in the catering order
before the wedding occurs.
Hr department in the company is given a tool to monitor and reward the employees who
works hard for the company’s welfare. The employees in Masbiru Sdn Bhd who get a
customer for the company, no matter from which department he or she is, that employee will
be given a bonus of 1% from the total sales of that customer. This method makes the
employees become motivated to get more customers for the company because they will gain
reward. For example, the staff department gets a customer who order catering package sum
up to RM22,500. The staff will get 1% monetary reward from the total sales, which is
RM225 (1% x RM22,500).

10. D) HOW WOULD YOU SUMMARIZE YOUR RECOMMENDED STRATEGY
POLICIES FOR THIS COMPANY?
Based in the strategy management Mas Biru cooperation I would recommend for Human
Resource management police because they are need to improve their management and more
focus to long-term goal. Strategic human resources management s formulating and executing
human resources policies and practice hat produce the employee competencies and behaviour
the company needs to archive its strategic aims. There are some factors that Mas Biru
cooperation need to improve they are weakness.
Firstly the Human resources management police which is manager should provide more
training for their all employees. By giving training for their employee will help the active the
goal of the company. Other advantage having training which is can make employees
innovation and productive. Besides that, Mas Biru needs to hire more employees in the
department for human resources management, sale and marketing and accounting
department. Because there not enough worker in these department. Improving the
performance of the workers in term of sale or productive. The next human resources strategy
they manage employee engagement. Mas Biro Company needs to provide cross functional
training then it will make the relationship among employees are good.
To conclude, MasBiru Sdn. Bhd. needs to improve their Human Resource Management to
achieve long term goal for the future. The Human Resource Management policy is very
important apply for this company because there are have some issue to solve.
