FAIRY TALES OR FAITH
Barry Kennedy
How many of us have told our children “bedtime” stories? Some of those stories
are what might be called “fairy tales.” We do not expect our children to believe that
these stories are true; they are simply meant to be entertaining. It is true that a good
fairy tale can make one feel calm or ease one’s mind, but the truth is the only thing that
will set one free (John 8:32). What are we looking to for our comfort and strength? Is it
the “Faithful Truth of God’s Word,” or just some “Fairy Tale?”
Fairy Tales can lead us astray. The apostle Paul repeatedly warned Timothy
(a young preacher) about the dangers of “fables,” as opposed to true (i.e. sound)
doctrine.
As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus, when I went into Macedonia, that
thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine, neither give heed
to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly
edifying which is in faith: so, do (1 Timothy 1:3, 4).
If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good
minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good
doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. But refuse profane and old wives' fables
and exercise thyself rather unto godliness (1 Timothy 4:6, 7).
Notice the contrast Paul made between fables (fiction or tale) and good doctrine. The
difference is summed up in one word “godliness.” No one would ever be so foolish as to
allow a fable to be their guide for life, would they? Maybe not consciously, but
subconsciously many do allow the ideas of fairy tales to be their source of guidance in
life. Think of how many marriages have failed because “Prince Charming” and
“Cinderella” turned out to be nothing like what the story book had promised. How many
times have you seen people throw their money into the “wishing well” never to have
their wish come true? Of course, who has not wished upon a falling star? All are the
source of fairy tales and childish dreams. That is all well for a bedtime story book, but is
it adequate for the guidance of the soul? “Godliness with contentment is great gain”
(1Timothy 6:6).
Paul’s warnings became even more intense with his second letter to young
Timothy.
I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge
the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be
instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering
and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;
but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching
ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned
unto fables (2 Timothy 4:1-4).

Those who do not want the truth will not hear the
truth, but rather, they shall follow after fables (fairy
tales) and be led away from the Lord. Are we
following fairy tales?
Faithful Truths will make us free. As we
have already noted, Paul has instructed Timothy to
preach the word. Notice that Paul did not say preach
opinions, for that would make Timothy (or any
other preacher) the authority. Yet Jesus said, “All
power (i.e. authority) is given unto Me in Heaven
and in earth” (Matthew 28:18). This same Jesus is
the one who wants all men everywhere to be saved
(1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Peter 3:9). Salvation is defined as
freedom from our sin (Acts 2:38; 22:16). So, what
does all this have to do with the subject of fairy
tales or faithful truths? Jesus said, “And ye shall
know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”
(John 8:24). Jesus is excluding all other ways for
freedom from sin. “For other foundation can no
man lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus
Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:11). “Neither is there
salvation in any other: for there is none other name
under Heaven given among men, whereby we must
be saved” (Acts 4:12). We must never forget the
truth is the standard for salvation and that truth is
the word of God (John 17:17) and not the fairy tales
of the world.
Are we finding our guidance in the “Fairy
Tales” of man or in the “Faithful Truths” of God’s
Word? The choice is ours. May God help us all to
search the scriptures and to find the life God has
made available to all mankind (John 5:39; 10:10).
