DID YOU THINK TO PRAY

Of all the great blessings we have been given through Christ, prayer
should be one of the most precious. Of course, forgiveness of sins, hope, grace,
etc., are all wonderful blessings and should never be taken for granted, but how
awesome is it to know that we can step into the very throne room of God. “Let us
therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and
find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
God has offered mankind a golden opportunity to have an audience with
Him whenever we want or need Him. “God is our refuge and strength, a very
present help in trouble” (Psalm 46:1). Getting through life without God should
be unimaginable, yet many people are choosing to go through life without God,
never willing to ask for His blessings or seek His forgiveness (James 4). Yet,
there are still many who long for communication with the Almighty. They read
His Word to hear His will and direction and they open their hearts to Him in
prayer. In fact, some have written hymns concerning prayer. For example, in
1875 Mary A. Kidder wrote the lyrics to the song “Did You Think to Pray.”
Consider a couple of points Kidder set forth in this song and how we should
answer the question, “Did You Think to Pray?”.
Verse one: Ere you left your room this morning, Did you think to pray? In
the name of Christ our Savior, Did you sue for loving favor, As a shield today?
As we begin the business of the day do we start with a word of prayer? Do we
petition the Almighty in search of His favor, and ask Him to be our shield of
defense (Psalm 91:1-9)? Faith is our shield (Ephesians 6:16), and faith comes by
hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). That does not mean that we can leave
God out of our plans and expect a victory (Matthew 26:41). Can we answer,
“Yes, I thought to pray.”
Refrain: Oh, how praying rests the weary! Prayer will change the night to
day; So when life seems dark and dreary, Don’t forget to pray. Prayer should be a
rest to God’s children. Prayer is the Christian’s opportunity to cast all his cares
upon God, with a heart full of assurance that He cares for His own (1Peter 5:7). It
gives a Christian the ability to put the cares of this world behind him (Philippians
4:6), and reach forth to a brighter home awaiting (John 14:1-6; Philippians 3:13-
14). Mary Kidder wrote three other verses to this song, emphasizing prayer in
times of temptation, anger, and trails. All the while asking, “Did You Think to
Pray?” Well, did we?

from the Lord, who made heaven and
earth. He will not allow your foot to be
moved; He who keeps you will not slumber”
(Psalm 121:1-3).

The Privilege of Knowing God
Paul confided, “For this reason I also suffer these
things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know
whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is
able to keep what I have committed to Him until that
Day” (2 Timothy 1:12). He said, “I know whom [not
merely what] I have believed.”
The Christian’s assurance is linked to God the
Father’s character. God the Father has some
astonishing metaphysical attributes:
• Self-existent (Psalm 90:2; John 5:26)
• Eternal (Psalm 90:1-2)
• Omniscient (Hebrews 4:13)
• Omnipotent (Daniel 4:35)
• Holy (1 Peter 1:15-16; Revelation 4)
• Faithful and just (John 7:24)
• Merciful (Titus 3:4-7)
He has an even more amazing moral characteristic:
God is a being of absolute love (1 John 4:8, 11). This
is one of the great themes of the New Testament (John
3:16; 10:28-29; Romans 8:31-39; Ephesians 2:5, 8-9;
1 Peter 1:3-5; 1 John 4:7-21). God’s love shows that
He gave His Son to die in our place (John 3:16), while
we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8). It also shows that
He does not want a single person to be lost (2 Peter
3:9; 1 Timothy 2:4).
