This newsletter provides information on upcoming conferences and projects related to immersive technologies. It discusses the ImREAL project which is studying how to create adaptive learning simulations. It also describes projects at De Montfort University to develop interactive 3D models of historic sites for cultural heritage and tourism using augmented reality. Finally, it lists upcoming conferences on topics like serious games, virtual worlds, and simulations.

Adaptive Learning Simulations: Augmented virtuality gets real!
ImREAL Screenshot
Training needs more and more tools and applications that are able to adapt, not only to the user, but also to the context. Both can
change rapidly and being able to design an instrument that follows these changes in a short timeframe represents an investment
that can save time and resources. Using standard methods that are detached from users’ personal experiences and from the
working context are not only obsolete but also ineffective. The ImREAL project (www.imreal-project.eu) is studying how to create
services that are simulator-independent (so that theoretically any simulator could add these) in order to a) exploit activity theory
to be able to update contents with changing reality really quickly b) add affective-metacognitive scaffolding to support learning
and reflection and c) to extend learner modeling with information coming from the web 2.0. Follow @imreal project and join
conversation on LinkedIn (in the ImREAL group).
Immersive Technologies for Culture, Heritage and Tourism
3D Visualisation of Rosslyn Chapel by Students at De Montfort University
The use of high-fidelity interactive 3D environments is no longer the sole domain of games consoles and high specification
desktop computers. With the rapid development of high quality graphic capabilities on portable devices like the iPad and the
embedding of sensor technologies, come massive opportunities for rich interactive multimedia experience in culture, heritage and
tourism applications. Six students at De Montfort University used the Unity games engine to develop an accurate interactive
model of Rosslyn Chapel for use at the heritage centre, complete with the ability to navigate freely around the chapel and explore
artefacts with pop-up textual information.
If you are interested in sponsoring further development or would like more information on this and/or any other 3D visualisation
work from the Game Art Design Course at De Montfort University, contact Michael Powell – mlp@dmu.ac.uk
2. Virtual Roman Leicester in 210 AD
Another project which has been ongoing at De Montfort University for some time is the visualisation of Roman Leicester and its
overlay onto modern day Google maps with access to interactive 3D visualisations of artefacts dating from the same period, geo-
locating them on map overlays. The use of GPS enabled augmented reality on portable devices will enable tourists to gain a richer
insight into the city’s cultural heritage.
