Absalom’s revolution is over;
2 Samuel 19b
DavidThe people want David to come
back to Jerusalem as king.
The King is Coming
4. 4
2 Samuel 19:15 So the king
returned, and came to
Jordan. And (the men of)
Judah came to Gilgal, to go
to meet the king, to conduct
the king over Jordan.
16 And Shimei the son of
Gera, a Benjamite, which
was of Bahurim, hasted
and came down with the
men of Judah to meet king
David.
Shimei was the one
who cussed David
and threw rocks
and dirt at him as
he left Jerusalem.
5. 5
17 And there were a
thousand men of
Benjamin with him, and
Ziba the servant of the
house of Saul, and his
fifteen sons and his
twenty servants with him;
and they went over Jordan
before the king.
Ziba was the servant
of Mephibosheth; he
had told David that
Phib stayed in
Jerusalem hoping to
gain the throne.
6. 6
18 And there went over a ferry
boat to carry over the king's
household, and to do what he
thought good. And Shimei the son
of Gera fell down before the king,
as he was come over Jordan;
19 And said unto the king, Let not
my lord impute iniquity unto me,
neither do thou remember that
which thy servant did perversely
the day that my lord the king went
out of Jerusalem, that the king
should take it to his heart.
Now he repents;
when David is
returning
victorious, he
repents.
7. 7
20 For thy servant doth know
that I have sinned: therefore,
behold, I am come the first
this day of all the house of
Joseph to go down to meet
my lord the king.
Abishai
21 But Abishai the son of
Zeruiah answered and said,
Shall not Shimei be put to
death for this, because he
cursed the LORD'S
anointed?
8. 8
Abishai was a warrior, right down to his bones, and
he was a defender of his Uncle David.
Shimei deserved to be put to death.
But, thank God, we don’t always
get what we deserve!
9. 9
22 And David said, What have I to do with you, ye
sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adver-
saries unto me?
Both Abishai and Joab were sons of
David’s sister, Zeruiah.
They were quick to speak their minds,
and often disagreed with David.
10. 10
22b shall there any man be put to death this day in
Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king
over Israel? 23 Therefore the king said unto Shimei,
Thou shalt not die. And the king sware unto him.
David didn’t want to turn a day of
celebration into a day of death.
11. 11
Too often hot-headed people turn what should
be a blessed day into an uproar.
Family holiday Wedding
Who got what
Who does what
David didn’t want a killing to
mar his return as king.
12. 12
But, as he lay dying, David instructed Solomon to
deal with Shimei for his cussing and rock throwing.
1 Kings 2 (NIV) 8 "And remember, you have with
you Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahu-
rim, who called down bitter curses on me the day I
went to Mahanaim. When he came down to meet
me at the Jordan (as David returned to Jerusalem
victorious), I swore to him by the LORD: 'I will not
put you to death by the sword.' 9 But now, do not
consider him innocent. You are a man of wisdom;
you will know what to do to him. Bring his gray
head down to the grave in blood."
13. 13
Shimei had asked forgiveness, but apparently he
had not truly repented of his rebelliousness.
He gave David trouble, and David believed he
would also give Solomon trouble.
David told Solomon to deal with him before he did.
14. 14
Matthew 3 7 But when he
saw many of the Pharisees
and Sadducees come to his
baptism, he said unto them,
O generation of vipers, who
hath warned you to flee from
the wrath to come? 8 Bring
forth therefore fruits meet
(worthy) for repentance:
John the Baptist
Water baptism does not wash away one’s sins.
We must turn from sin unto righteousness.
15. 15
2 Timothy 2 19 Nevertheless the foundation of God
standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth
them that are His. And, Let every one that nameth
the Name of Christ depart from iniquity. … 22 Flee
also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith,
charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out
of a pure heart.
Depart from iniquity; flee youthful lusts.
Grow up! Be a man or woman of God.
Follow righteousness, faith, love, and peace
With them that call on God with pure hearts.
16. 16
1 Peter 3 10 For he that will love life, and see good
days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his
lips that they speak no guile: 11 Let him eschew
(shun or turn from) evil, and do good; let him seek
peace, and ensue (pursue) it. 12 For the eyes of the
Lord are over the righteous, and His ears are open
unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is
against them that do evil.
To follow God we must turn from sin.
Not to be saved, but because we are saved.
17. 17
Luke 9 23 Then He said to them all: "If anyone
would come after Me, he must deny himself and
take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 For who-
ever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever
loses his life for Me will save it.
2 Corinthians 5 17 Therefore if any man be in
Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed
away; behold, all things are become new.
(TLB) 17 When someone becomes a Christian, he
becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the
same anymore. A new life has begun!
18. 18
Just as David knew that Shimei had not truly changed,
and would one day bring trouble to Solomon,
There are many today who profess salvation, but
are never truly transformed.
They may shed some crocodile
tears, but without repentance.
They say, “I’m sorry.”
But are not truly sorrowful for
their sins.
