Foreword
Much is written about strategy, but very little about how
to implement that strategy. We have all been carried
away by grand strategic plans, only to revisit those
plans a year later to see that nothing has changed and
nothing has been implemented. This book changes
all that…effective execution of a business strategy is
at its heart. The Visual System of Work provides a
method and tools to help an organization work better,
make money and generate cash…in other words, to be
successful.
I have had the pleasure of working with David over
the past 15 years on various projects and initiatives in
private, educational and non-profit organizations and
have always found him to bring value to any dialog
with his holistic thinking and process analysis skills. He
is an excellent communicator, encourager and problem-
solver and knows how to create order out of chaos.
David understands the challenges of running a small
business, using dialog, data and visual management

INTRODUCTION
Making Work Visible
Twenty years ago, while working as a small business consultant,
I discovered an ingeniously simple method for helping a
business get better. The method’s concepts are simple, easy to
implement and can be used on any size or kind of business.
The method, making work visible, uses simple visualization as a
vehicle for understanding complex business structure. The simple
act of seeing how a business works naturally leads employees
to more personal involvement as well as better communication,
cooperation and coordination of effort within that business.
When employees can see the interconnections within an
organization they have the information they need to work together
as a cohesive unit…and that transforms a business.
This method continues to work over time, even when you take into
account all the changes and renovations that will naturally take
place in every business. Often, when I go back and check in with
businesses that I had once helped make better, I find that they are
still using the same visual tools and methods I had once showed
them. Those are also the businesses that continue to get better,
make money and generate cash.
When I see that kind of progress, it is my greatest reward. As a
business consultant, my goal is to take a business from the depths
of economic uncertainty to the heights of financial security. It
would give me great pleasure if you, too, decided to take your
business on that journey. By applying the method and tools in
this book, your company will soon be working better, having
happier employees, and more loyal customers and, most
importantly, making more money and generating more cash.

  • 13. 14 Introduction INTRODUCTION Making Work Visible Twenty years ago, while working as a small business consultant, I discovered an ingeniously simple method for helping a business get better. The method’s concepts are simple, easy to implement and can be used on any size or kind of business. The method, making work visible, uses simple visualization as a vehicle for understanding complex business structure. The simple act of seeing how a business works naturally leads employees to more personal involvement as well as better communication, cooperation and coordination of effort within that business. When employees can see the interconnections within an organization they have the information they need to work together as a cohesive unit…and that transforms a business. This method continues to work over time, even when you take into account all the changes and renovations that will naturally take place in every business. Often, when I go back and check in with businesses that I had once helped make better, I find that they are still using the same visual tools and methods I had once showed them. Those are also the businesses that continue to get better, make money and generate cash. When I see that kind of progress, it is my greatest reward. As a business consultant, my goal is to take a business from the depths of economic uncertainty to the heights of financial security.
