2. Background
• Research Week has been conducted by the
Faculty of Medicine since before 1994 to assist
postgraduate medical students in coming up
with a research proposal, conducting their
research and analysing the data.
• However for 2014, the time period is
shortened to only 5 days due to unforeseen
circumstances, leaving only 3 days for lectures
and 2 days for SPSS classes.
3. The Lectures
• Research Opportunities in PPUKM
• Developing & Submitting a Project
Proposal
• Patient Information Sheet, Informed
Consent and Ethics in Clinical
Research
• Designing, Validating & Pre-Testing A
Questionnaire
• Clinical Trial & Randomization
• Cross Sectional Study & Sampling
Method
• Cohort Study
• Case-Control Study
• Clinical Disagreement and The Kappa
• Meta-Analysis
• Screening in Clinical Research
• Avoiding & Controlling for Biases
• Critical Appraisal
• Sample Size Calculation

• Statistic VII: Non-Parametric Tests
4. Why do research?
• As a requirement of your masters/PhD, you’re
required to write a thesis/dissertation based
on your scientific research.
• To help you decide on the topic of your
research, the dept would have nominated a
supervisor for you. The following lecture
would also help;
“Research Opportunities in PPUKM”
5. Preparing a proposal
• Once a topic was decided, you will have to prepare a
research proposal. The proposal would be vetted at the
respective dept before being submitted to the ethics
committee.
• These lectures would help;
– Developing & Submitting a Project Proposal
– Patient Information Sheet, Informed Consent and Ethics in
Clinical Research
– Designing, Validating & Pre-Testing A Questionnaire
– Sample Size Calculation
– Procedure for Animal Ethics Approval
– Avoiding & Controlling for Biases
– Critical Appraisal (in preparing literature review)
6. Deciding Your Study Design
Usual design
• Clinical Trial &
Randomization
• Cross Sectional Study &
Sampling Method
• Cohort Study
• Case-Control Study
Advanced
• Clinical Disagreement and
The Kappa
• Meta-Analysis
• Screening in Clinical
Research (Diagnostic
Testing)
7. Analysing Your Data
• Statistic I: Data
Collection & Handling
• Statistic II: Exploring
Data & Testing
Hypothesis
• Statistic III: Chi-Square
Test
• Statistic IV: t test and
ANOVA
• Statistic V: Correlation
and regression
• Statistic
VII: Non-Parametric Tests
8. Writing it up
• These two lectures will help in writing up and
presenting your data;
– Presentation Skill
– Manuscript Writing
