2. Introduction
Known for his resiliency planning and historic preservation work, R.
Christopher Goodwin, PhD, is an archaeologist who directs a preservation
planning firm with offices all over the country. Commissioned to lead a
range of projects, from preserving shipwrecks to surveying cemeteries, Dr.
R. Christopher Goodwin helps owners of historic properties obtain the
proper recognition and protections for their buildings.
Recently, the Connecticut State Historic Preservation office commissioned
Dr. Goodwin's firm to assist the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society in listing its
building on the Connecticut Register of Historic Places. The building was
originally constructed in 1836 and sold to the society in 1929. Beginning in
the mid-20th century, the organization used the building as headquarters
from which to help Portuguese immigrants assimilate to their new home in
America.
The society offered assistance with registering children for school, starting
the citizenship process, and learning English. Today, the Portuguese Holy
Ghost Society has shifted roles and works to preserve Portuguese culture
and heritage in the community.
