1. Deciding Which Documentary Mode To Use:
After our research on documentary modes was completed we came together as a group and
discussed the findings of our research and whether we should use only one documentary mode
or use different elements of each documentary mode. At first we wanted to have a combination
and a mixture of all the different documentary modes however, after lengthy discussion we
decided we should only use documentary modes that were relevant to us and the way we wanted
to depict our documentary. Therefore, we began to eliminate documentary modes that we felt
were irrelevant to us and would not aid the documentary.
Immediately we all agreed that observational mode would not used in our documentary. We
disregard this for many reasons. Firstly this documentary mode did not allow us to interact us
the characters involved therefore, we would be unable to find out their opinions on the topic and
how it has effected them personally which was crucial aspect needed in our documentary.
Secondly, this documentary mode is extremely time consuming as it would involve following
the characters none stop wherever they went. This would not meet our time scale for when the
documentary had to be completed plus, it would leave us with hours of footage which again
would be too costly on our editing time.
Finally, we discovered from our research we discovered that documentaries that use this
documentary mode are either wildlife documentaries or celebrity based documentaries. From
this it was clear that observation mode would not fit the genre our documentary and therefore
we decided to not to use it in our documentary.
2. We then went onto discuss the expositional mode and whether or not it could be used in
our documentary. Firstly, we began to discuss how we wanted to depict our documentary
and after our ideas were formed we decided expositional mode would be vital in our
documentary.
We decided to use expositional because it involved using a narrator. We thought a
narrator would be highly useful to have in our documentary as it would not only highlight
the facts of the recession and supply information to our target audience, but it would also
explain the implications the recession has had on peoples lives and because it would has
affected our target audience it will relate to them urging them to continue to watch the
documentary as it will be appealing to them.
Furthermore, from our research we discovered that conventionally nearly all modern day
documentaries use a narrator and therefore expositional mode. Therefore, from this we
gathered that by using expositional mode it would create more realism and
professionalism for our documentary urging a larger segment of our target audience to
watch it.
3. We then began exploring participatory mode and decided we would be using this
documentary mode. We came to this conclusion as a group we would all be involved in
the filmmaking and as this documentary mode involves us interacting with characters it
was only logical to incorporate this mode in our documentary.
In addition, this documentary mode similar to expositional mode allows us to create
more realism about our documentary as majority of documentaries today use this
documentary mode. Our goal for our documentary was to make is as realistic and
believable as possible and we believe that this documentary mode allows us to achieve
that goal. As a result, this will allow us to entice a large section of our target audience
and urge them to watch the documentary thereby, increasing our documentary rating and
making it a success.
We then began exploring poetic mode and decided to use this documentary mode as it
aims to make the target audience feel a particular way about the topic. This was relevant
for our documentary as we wanted our target audience to feel that the recession was
ruining young peoples lives, making them unable to achieve the goals they hoped to
obtain such as progressing onto higher education and receiving employment. The poetic
mode allowed us to portray the recession in any way we wanted to which was attractive
to us because as the filmmakers, it allowed us to have a greater sense of power on the
way we wanted our documentary to be depicted.
