2. Stages of Pregnancy The mother is now in labour. The baby is surrounded by a bag or sac containing fluid. As the uterus slowly pushes the baby out the sac bursts letting out the fluid. A baby is ready to be born when it is 9 months old. Usually it ’ s head it pointing downwards since this position makes it easier for birth.
3. The start of birth is when the mother feels the muscles of her uterus start to “ squeeze ” . These “ squeezes ” are called contractions and at first they happen every 30 minutes and become stronger and come about every 3 minutes. When the baby is born it is still attached to the placenta by the cord which must be cut and tied. Later the rest of the cord and the placenta come out and this is called the after-birth.
