This tutorial gets you familiar with NYSCI's Choreo Graph Noticing Tool where you get to play with angles, graphs, and coordinate geometry to create an animated symmetrical dance routine.

Choreo Graph?

5. Choreo Graph was inspired by dance
and movement
We developed a tool that
allows students to explore
the deep mathematics
that is involved in
choreographing the motion
of things kids care about.

7. In the app, you’re playing with angles, translations (sliding
a part from one spot to another), and coordinate grids.
The graphs are mathematical models for the way motion
changes throughout your animation.

Express symmetry in
the movements of your
dancer.

You will be
prompted to take
a picture.
Then, choose one picture from the scroll.

You can begin to
digitally cut out the
parts of your
dancer that you
would like to make
move.
Trace carefully with your finger− you can pinch out to
zoom in and improve precision. If satisfied, tap the check
mark, or click the X and discard what you’ve done.

Your Dancer
Once you have all the parts you want for your
dancer, you are ready to make your dancer move
on the ANIMATE stage.

17. The line graph shows how the selected part
changes through time. You can set the angle at
moments in the animation represented by nodes
in the graph.

Stretch a node of the line graph up or down to set
the part’s angle of rotation at that moment of the
animation.

This will show you all the angles of rotation that you
have applied to your dancer. (Angles are also displayed
on the graphs above).

Paying close attention to these angle measurements
can be helpful in creating symmetry.

TRANSLATION.
This will show
the path your
dancer travels.
To add translations to your dance, select the part
you want to move and then choose a node on its
line graph. Drag the part to a new position on the
stage.

You can set the location of your dancer for each
node of the line graph.

Tap the wrench
and TOGGLE on
GRID.
The GRID will display the coordinates of each part at
any given point in your animated dance sequence.

Helpful Hint:
COPY or CLEAR
all rotation

Copying allows you to paste those values into another
line graph, resulting in the other part replicating
the movement.

Looking at the two graphs allows you to easily
manipulate the values so that they are opposites,
and thereby symmetrical.

Choreo Graph will automatically save your project, but
you can save a video to your camera roll that you can
share over email or on other social platforms.

reflection report about their projects in TELL THE STORY.

you’ve already made to access it, edit it, or share it.
