23. Time swirled around us like strangers on a busy street;
She was wrapped in every color I had ever seen,
Crouching in a corner where Leonardo used to lean
And study passing faces. Now it was her seat.
Her hair was greasy and her feet were bare,
But her eyes glowed like dark red Tuscan wine
In Venetian glasses, and the same shine
Of his and Titian's sun lit her sitting there.
For age and beauty you cannot prepare.
So walk the halls of frames and broken stones,
Temples, churches, fountains, bones-
And still you'll see her ever waiting there.
