4. Romans 5:1, Therefore
• NAU Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by
faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ,
• NAU Romans 3:28 For we maintain that a man is
justified by faith apart from works of the Law.
• NAU Romans 4:3 For what does the Scripture say?
"ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS CREDITED TO
HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
• NAU Romans 4:10 How then was it credited? While he
was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while
circumcised, but while uncircumcised;
4
5. Romans 5:1, Therefore
• NAU Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been
justified by faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
• Romans uses the word “faith” more than any
other any other NAU book of the Bible. Almost
40% more than any other (Psalms, 150
chapters).
• Romans chapter 7 uses it more than any other
chapter, 23 X’s.
5
6. Romans 5:1, Peace Of God
• NAU Romans 5:1…we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ,
• Thank God for his peace,
• NAU Romans 5:10 For if while we were
enemies [hostile] we were reconciled to God
through the death of His Son, much more,
having been reconciled, we shall be saved by
His life.
7. Romans 5:2, We Exult In God
• NAU Romans 5:2 through whom also we have obtained our
introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and
we exult in hope of the glory of God.
• Mac dictionary defines “exult” as; “show or feel elation or
jubilation, especially as the result of a success”
• “exult” is only used here in Romans 5, NAU (3X’s)
• NAU Romans 5:3 And not only this, but we also exult in our
tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about
perseverance;
• NAU Romans 5:11 And not only this, but we also exult in
God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have
now received the reconciliation.
7
8. Romans 5:3, Trials and Tribulation
• Romans 5:3 And not only this, but we also exult in our
tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about
perseverance;
• James 1:2 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter
various trials,
• 1 Peter 1:6 In this you greatly rejoice, even though now for a
little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various
trials,
• John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me
you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take
courage; I have overcome the world.”
• Elias Boudinot said, “To have a God who is almighty, all wise, all
good and merciful to go to as your constant friend, as your
continual benefactor, as your safeguard and guide, it should- it
must- sweeten every bitter drought of life.”
10. Romans 5:8, Christ Saves Sinners
• NAU Romans 5:8 …while we were yet sinners, Christ
died for us.
• Billy Graham said, “One of the best-kept secrets in
Christianity is that God accepts us. True, He can't stand
our sinful acts, but He loves us. He doesn't have us on
performance-based acceptance; He has us on Jesus-
based acceptance.”
• Blaise Pascal said, ”There are only two kinds of men: the
righteous, who believe themselves sinners; the rest,
sinners who believe themselves righteous"
11. Romans 5:8,
Why did God want to save sinners?
• NAU Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own
love toward us…
• Some other reasons the Bible gives are in;
• NAU Ephesians 2:7 so that in the ages to come He
might show the surpassing riches of His grace…
• NAU Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus for good works…
• NAU Titus 2:14 …to redeem us from every lawless
deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own
possession, zealous for good deeds.
• NAU 1 John 4:8 …for God is love.
12. Romans 5:8, Sinners
• The advantage of not sinning;
• Psalm 51:13, 1:1, How blessed is the man who
does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the
seat of scoffers!
• The good news for sinners;
• Hosea 6:6 Matthew 9:13 "But go and learn
what this means: 'I DESIRE COMPASSION, AND
NOT SACRIFICE,' for I did not come to call the
righteous, but sinners.”
13. Romans 5:9
Saved From The Wrath of God
• NAU Romans 5:9 Much more then, having now been
justified by His blood, we [Paul included] shall be saved
[future tense] from the wrath of God through Him.
• Paul and all Christians have been saved (past tense)
from the penalty of hell. And will be (future tense)
saved from God's wrath during the Great Tribulation.
• Colossians 1:13 For He rescued us from the domain
of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His
beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the
forgiveness of sins.
13
14. Romans 5:10, Shall Be Saved
Romans 5:10
…we shall [future
tense] be saved
by His life.
There are
three tenses of
“saved” used
in the NT (past,
present, and future)
14
15. Romans 5:10, Shall Be Saved
• NAU Romans 5:10 For if while we were enemies we were
reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much
more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His
life.
• Past=penalty, Present=power, Future=presence
• NAU Acts 16:31 They said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and
you will be saved…
• NAU 1 Corinthians 1:18… but to us who are being saved it
is the power of God.
• NAU 1 Corinthians 3:15 If any man's work is burned up,
he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as
through fire. 15
16. Romans 5:10, We Were Enemies Of God
• NAU Romans 5:1…we have peace with God through our Lord
Jesus Christ,
• NAU Romans 5:10 For if while we were enemies [hostile] we were
reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more,
having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
• NAU 1 Corinthians 15:25 For He must reign until He has put all
His enemies under His feet.
• NAU Philippians 3:18 For many walk, of whom I often told you,
and now tell you even weeping, that they are enemies of the
cross of Christ, 19 whose end is destruction, whose god is their
appetite, and whose glory is in their shame, who set their minds
on earthly things.
17. KJV Romans 5:11, “atonement”
• KJV Romans 5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God
through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received
the atonement.1
• This word, “atonement,” is one of the most important words
in Leviticus. The “covering” required to approach an infinitely
holy God. There is only covering, blood, one way (John14:6,
Isaiah 6:5, 59:2 “burned with fire”).
• Hebrews 9:22 And according to the Law, one may almost say,
all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of
blood there is no forgiveness.
• 1/2 of all NAS uses of this word are in Leviticus (45/88), 3X’s as
much as any other book (Numbers has 15). There are no NT,
NAU, uses of this word (1ea. KJV, Rom 5:11, 1ea. NIV Hebrews 2:17,
9:5).
18. Romans 5:12 –21 Is The Heart Of The Gospel And
The Core Of The Book Of Romans
• NAU Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through
one man sin entered into the world, and death
through sin, and so death spread to all men,
because all sinned—
• This is the pinnacle of theology.
• If you get this you will get the gospel.
18
19. Romans 5:12, “one”
• NAU Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through
one man sin entered into the world….
• Romans chapter 5 has one of the most
concentrated uses of the word “one” in the
entire Bible. It's used 13 X’s here.
• Paul really wants you to understand that the
fall of the one man (Adam) resulted in the
curse, and the victory of the one Man (Christ)
resulted in salvation from it.
19
20. Romans 5:12, Sin Entered In Eden
Laura Groves relates that, “One day, my son Jonathan
came home from preschool with a picture of Adam
and Eve he had colored. He began to tell me the
story of creation, and it seemed as though he had
his facts down pretty well. "Adam and Eve
disobeyed God because they ate the fruit God told
them not to eat," he explained. Impressed by how
much he knew, I pointed to the picture and asked,
"What's this place called?" Jonathan replied
earnestly,
"The Garden of Eating."
22. Romans 5:12,
Death Spread, Because
• NAU Romans 5:12 …death spread to all men, because all
sinned—
• Mankind inherited a sin nature from Adam, but are not being
punished for Adam’s sin. Mankind will be punished (each of us)
for our individual sins. The only exceptions are for those whose
punishment was executed upon Christ.
• Just like when the father has a genetic deficiency and the
children inherit it, they are not being punished for the fathers
deficiency, but they do bear the consequences of it.
• God has promised repeatedly (Jeremiah 31:29-30, Ezekiel 18:2-
20) that He will not punish the children for the sins of the
father.
2
2
23. Romans 5:12,
Death Spread, Because
• All humans became sinners in Genesis 3. And when
those sinners reproduced, they bore more sinners,
“after their kind” (4327, Heb. min) and we do too.
• NAU Genesis 1:24 Then God said, "Let the earth bring
forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and
creeping things and beasts of the earth after their
kind"; and it was so.
• NAU Genesis 7:14 they and every beast after its kind,
and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping
thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every
bird after its kind, all sorts of birds.

25. Romans 5:13-17, Is a parenthetical
insertion
• NKJ Romans 5:12 …death spread to all men, because all
sinned— 13 (For until… 17…Jesus Christ.)
• Romans 5:12 +18 is Paul's complete thought. 12-17 is
Paul's elaboration/explanation
• NAU Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin
entered into the world, and death through sin, and so
death spread to all men, because all sinned—… 18
Therefore, as through one man's offense judgment came
to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through
one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all men,
resulting in justification of life.
25
26. Romans 5:14, Adam Palindrome
• NAU Romans 5:14 Nevertheless death reigned
from Adam until Moses, even over those who
had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of
Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.
• Have you ever heard the palindrome "Madam,
I'm Adam"? With a palindrome, the letters are
exactly the same whether you read the
sentence from left to right or from right to left.
26
27. Romans 5:15, The Gift Of Grace
• NKJ Romans 5:15 But the free gift is not like the offense. For if by the
one man's offense many died, much more the grace of God and the
gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.
• Acts 15:11 …we are saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus…
• Romans 11:6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works,
otherwise grace is no longer grace.
• 1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His
grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all
of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.
• James 4:6 But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, "GOD IS
OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”
• Philip Yancey said, “Grace means that God already loves us as much
as an infinite God can possibly love.
28. Romans 5:15,
Common Grace Or Limited Atonement
• NKJ Romans 5:15 But the free gift is not like the
offense. For if by the one man's offense many died,
much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace
of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.
• How many “died” in Adam?
• NAU 2 Corinthians 5:14 For the love of Christ controls
us, having concluded this, that one died for all,
therefore all died; 15 and He died for all, so that they
who live might no longer live for themselves, but for
Him who died and rose again on their behalf.
• The group “they who live” is a subset (the elect) that
should live for Christ.
29. Romans 5:15,
Common Grace Or Limited Atonement
• Calvinism (Reformed Theology) is usually expressed in the acronym TULIP:
• Total Depravity
• Unconditional Election
• Limited Atonement
• Irresistible Grace
• Perseverance of the Saints
• The difference between a four point Calvinist and a five point Calvinist
centers around the disagreement over “Limited Atonement”
• Did Christ die for everyone or only the elect?
• Do the elect have no choice in the matter because God’s grace is irresistible,
and it is Christ's blood only available to them?
• Or is Christ’s atonement available to everyone, but only the elect will receive
him as Lord and Savior?
30. Limited Atonement, 4 Point
Calvinism
• NAU 2 Corinthians 5:15 and He died for all, so that they
who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him
who died and rose again on their behalf.
• Paul is making a distinction between “all” and “they who
live”. If universalism were true he would not have had to
add “they who live”. If limited atonement were true he
would not have needed to say “all”.
• NAU 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise,
as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not
wishing for any to perish but for all to come to
repentance.
30
31. Romans 5:15,
Common Grace Or Limited Atonement
• Calvinism (Reformed Theology) says that if Christ had died for everyone
then everyone would be saved.
• Yet Jesus says in;
• NAU Matthew 23:37 "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and
stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your
children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and
you were unwilling.
• NAU John 1:12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to
become children of God, even to those who believe in His name,
• NAU 1 Timothy 2:3-4, …God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved
and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
• NAU 1 John 2:2 and He Himself is athe 1propitiation for our sins; and not
for ours only, but also bfor those of the whole world.
32. Romans 5:20, Law And Grace
A Rock and a Soft Place
• NAU Romans 5:20 The Law came in so that the
transgression would increase; but where sin increased,
grace abounded all the more,
• NAU John 1:17 For the Law was given through Moses;
grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
• Anna Zogg tells that, “Soon after my brother moved, he
made a point of meeting his new neighbors. He found
that a Christian family lived on one side and an attorney
on the other. My brother remarked,
• "We've got law on one side and grace on the other."
32
33. Romans 5:20, The Law came in
• NAU Romans 5:20 The Law came in …
• KJV Romans 5:20 …entered…
• 3922 παρεισέρχομαι pareiserchomai …
• Meaning: 1) to come in secretly or by stealth,
or creep or steal in 2) to enter in addition,
come in besides …
• To come in alongside. Used of for an
secondary actor coming in as a secondary role
(not the main thing)
35. THE END
NAU 1 Peter 2:16 Act
as free men, and do
not use your freedom
as a covering for evil,
but use it as
bondslaves of God.

37. Romans 11:33, Our Multi-
Directional Genetic Code
• “Have you ever heard the palindrome "Madam, I'm Adam"? With a palindrome, the letters are
exactly the same whether you read the sentence from left to right or from right to left.
• Chemical structure of DNABut did you know your genetic code is a different kind of palindrome
that conveys one series of messages when it is read from front to back and a different series of
messages when it is read from back to front? Other meaningful information can even be found in
overlapping portions of the genome! Think about your genetic code as if it were a novel. It would
tell one story when read from front to back, an additional story from back to front, and many
other stories as you read overlapping messages of the code!
• Evolutionists find this very troubling. After all, their whole theory depends on random mutations
resulting in improvements. But as scientists at the FMS Foundation point out, this multi-
directional coding makes it impossible for a random "typo” to benefit one code without disrupting
the others. This fundamental problem, they said, has been overlooked until now. "The bottom
line," they conclude, "is that overlapping codes cannot arise by any natural process – they must be
very carefully designed."
• Yes, evolutionists must come to grips with the fact that the genetic code was designed. Chance
mutations would only destroy the code. While evolution can't even begin to account for the
genetic code found within every cell of your body, it was an easy task for our Creator!

38. Hebrews 11:1-2, OT Saints, Saved By Grace
• QUESTION FOR THE DAY
• Dear Compass,
• I would like to know what happened to the faithful in the OT. Were any of them saved? I have heard that they were held in the bosom of Abraham
but cannot find that info in the Bible.
• Another wrote:
• Prior to Jesus, who was saved and what scriptural passages support the position?
•
ANSWER:
• Everyone who goes to heaven, those living prior to the cross and those living after the cross, will have been saved the same way—by faith.
• Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval. —Hebrews 11:1-2
• For by grace you have been saved through faith . . . —Ephesians 2:8 (See also Hebrews 11:1-39, Romans 3:28, Romans 5:1-2)
• Those who lived prior to the cross could be saved, by faith, by trusting that God would send a future Messiah to pay for their sin. Those saved after
the cross look back to the cross, by faith, that Jesus was the Messiah sent by God.
• Today, when a believer (saved by faith) dies, he/she goes directly into the presence of the Lord.
• we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. —2 Corinthians 5:8But those saved
prior to Jesus' death on the cross could not yet go into the presence of the Lord when they died. They had to wait until the Messiah came and paid
for their sin.Since those who were saved and died prior to the cross could not yet go to heaven, God provided a place for them to wait for the
Messiah to come. This waiting place was called "Abraham's bosom" and was located next to Hades in the center of the earth. In fact, those who were
in Hades, conscious and in an agonizing flame, could look across the divider and see those in Paradise. This is all found in Luke 16:19-31, the account
(not a parable) of the rich man and Lazarus.
• When Jesus came and died on the cross, the first thing He did was to "descend" (Ephesians 4:9-10) to Abraham's bosom to bring up the saints of old
and take them to Paradise/heaven (Luke 23:43; 2 Corinthians 12:4; Revelation 2:7). Some scholars even speculate that the strange verses in Matthew
about the dead saints appearing after Jesus' death (Matthew 27:51-53) are referring to redeemed saints from Abraham's bosom passing through the
surface of earth on the way to heaven.
39. Rom 5:21 Matthew 25:30, Hell
• Today is May 7, 2013
•
Verse of the Day -- Matthew 25:30
•
. . . cast out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
•
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
• Never let anyone tell you that God won't send anyone to hell.
•
MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY
• A cover of a past U.S. News and World Report boldly proclaimed that hell was "out of fashion" and that "modern thinking" says there is no longer a
place of torment. Really? Can you believe a national magazine would actually print an article that says hell is not politically correct?! Even worse,
clergyman after clergyman agreed. But we'll leave that for another day.
• The Bible says that God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
• Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. —Hebrews 13:8God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said, "Thus you shall say to the
sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" —Exodus 3:14
• He never changes. Nor do His words. Jesus described hell as a place whose inhabitants are alive, in the dark, and in tremendous pain.. . . the fiery
hell —Matthew 5:22
• soul and body in hell —Matthew 10:28
• the unquenchable fire —Matthew 9:43
• . . . outer darkness . . . weeping and gnashing of teeth —Matthew 22:13
• Always remember, you are saved, by God's mercy, FROM hell.. . . how shall you escape the sentence of hell? —Matthew 23:33
• . . . sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. —Rom. 5:21
• PTL!

40. Romans 5:14, God Put Adam To Sleep And
Made A Woman
• 1 Timothy 2:13 For it was Adam who was first created, and
then Eve.
• I'm reminded of that second grade girl who came home
from Sunday school one day. She was so excited about what
she had learned. Her daddy asked her, "What did you learn
in Sunday school?" The little girl replied, "Oh, Daddy, it was
just so great, because you see, God created Adam first. Then
God saw that it was not good for Adam to be alone, so God
put Adam to sleep and took out
• his brains and made a woman out of them."
• And all the women said — Amen! No, that's not in the Bible.
That's in Second Allusions 3. No, we must remain biblical.
41. Romans 5:9 Acts 2:17-21 Joel 2:28-32 2
Thes 2:3, Falling Away Or Revival?
• Falling Away Or Revival?
• Monday, February 10th, 2014Interpreting Verses
• Prophecy
• Q. If we are in the end times 2 Thes. 2 speaks to a falling away. But Acts 2 seems to speak to an end times revival. Can you reconcile these two
apparently contradictory verses?
• A. In 2 Thes. 2:3 Paul said the day of the Lord cannot come until there has been a falling away (apostasy) and the man of lawlessness (anti-Christ) is
revealed. He said this revealing will consist of him standing in the temple proclaiming himself to be God (2 Thes. 2:4). In Matt. 24:15 Jesus called this
the abomination of desolation and said it will kick off the Great Tribulation. Then in 2 Thes.2:7 Paul said the anti-Christ cannot be revealed until the
one holding the secret power of lawlessness back is taken out of the way. Pre-Trib scholars see this “restrainer” as the Holy Spirit, and His being taken
out of the way away as a hint that the rapture of the Church will take place before the anti-Christ appears. However we don’t need to rely on this to
prove the pre-trib rapture because in Romans 5:9 and 1 Thes. 1:10 Paul said the Church will be rescued (delivered) from (out of the time and place) of
the coming wrath.
• In Acts 2:17-21 Peter was quoting Joel 2:28-32 to show that the manifestation of tongues that had just taken place was the fulfillment of prophecy. In
doing so he used the widest possible interpretation of the term “in the last days” to make it include the entire church age. But beginning in Acts
2:19 it’s clear the prophecy is about the end times judgments and in Acts 2:20 Joel’s reference to the Sun becoming dark and the moon turning to
blood is repeated only here and in Rev. 6:12 in the 6th seal judgment. This is the event that will cause the kings of the earth to declare that the great
day of God’s wrath has come (Rev. 6:15-17).
• Acts 2:21 is the verse I assume you’re referring to as an end times revival. If so, it will happen after the time of God’s wrath has begun and after the
Church has been raptured. I believe the rapture of the church will trigger a great revival on Earth as many of those left behind will realize the rapture
proves the Bible to be right about the need to be saved. I see evidence of this in Rev. 7:9-10 where a multitude too large to count from every
nation will arrive in heaven. Rev. 7:15shows why this group can’t be part of the church. They will serve God day and night in His temple but they are
not called priests, and there is no temple in the New Jerusalem where the church will be (Rev. 21:22).
• I believe that a comparison of these two passages shows that both the falling away and the revival will take place.
• Romans 5:9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.
42. Romans 5:12 Did We All Come From
Noah’s Sons?
• Did We All Come From Noah’s Sons?
• Sunday, February 23rd, 2014Bible Accuracy
• Bible Origins
• Old Testament
• Q. I understand Genesis 11 says in reference to the Tower of Babel that: “So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was
called Babel —because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.” Was this a case in which God
scattered them instantaneously across the earth? If not, how was this accomplished? How did Adam & Eve’s descendants multiply AND cross major bodies of waters to populate other
entirely new/unpopulated areas?
• Also, how can other races, i.e. Native Americans, Asians, be attributed to Noah’s children? If not Noah’s children, then where did they start? I know that the world’s languages originated at
the Tower of Babel, but I’m wondering where and when skin colors and unique physical attributes of the worlds races came to be. On top of all this, time for the creation of their own
cultures, seemingly void of the God of the Jewish tradition, all in around 6,000 years. I know it’s an involved question, but any insight would be a huge help and much appreciated.
• A. In Genesis 10 we’re given an overview of the descendants of Noah’s three sons (Shem, Ham, and Japheth) and how they grew to become 70 distinct people groups (nations) after they
were scattered. Today the UN recognizes over 200 nations, but all people on Earth are descended from these three brothers. Genesis 11 gives us more detail about man’s scattering before
focusing on the descendants of Shem.
• Here’s a quick overview on how all of this might have happened. Nimrod was two generations removed from Ham and built the City of Babylon where the Tower of Babel was located and
from whence the people were scattered.(Genesis 10:8)
• Peleg was three generations from Ham’s brother Shem. It was during Peleg’s time that the land was divided (Genesis 10:25). Many scholars believe this refers to a separation of Earth’s
single land mass into continents. There could have been several hundred years between Nimrod and Peleg. (Genesis 10:25)
• Originally everyone spoke the same language (Genesis 11:1). When God scattered the people, he did it by giving each people group a unique language making it impossible for any of the
families of the three brothers to understand any of the others’ languages (Genesis 11:7). This created mistrust and caused them to separate. God put it into their hearts to continue roaming
until there were great distances between them. Initially no oceans impeded their wandering so they kept going until they were scattered all over the single land mass. Then God further
isolated them by breaking the land mass up into the continents we see today.
• This forced people of like language to marry only among themselves. Their dominant traits became more so. For instance Ham’s name means dark, as if sunburned. He named one of his
sons Cush, which is the Hebrew word for black. Cush is the father of the black African races. Another son, Mizraim, founded both Upper and Lower Egypt. Shem is the father of the Arabs
and Jews. Japheth is the father of the Europeans and Russians. The Chinese are most likely descended from the Sinites, a branch of the Canaanites whose father was Ham. Recently
conducted DNA studies show that the American Indians are descended from the people of Eastern Asia. Genetic science has shown that all the races we know today could have begun to
show distinguishing characteristics within a relatively few generations. But it all began with Noah’s three sons.

44. Romans 5:3 Deuteronomy 30:19,
Euthanasia, choose life, GotQuestions.org
• Question: "What does the Bible say about euthanasia / assisted suicide?"
Answer: Euthanasia, sometimes called “mercy killing,” can be a difficult issue. On one hand, we do not want to take a person’s life into our own hands and end it prematurely. On the other
hand, we do not want to prolong the process of dying more than necessary—that is, we want to preserve life, but not prolong death. At what point do we simply allow a person to die and
take no further action to extend his or her life?
A related issue is that of assisted suicide. Essentially, a person seeking assisted suicide is seeking to euthanize himself, with the aid of another person to ensure that death is quick and
painless. The person assisting the suicide facilitates death by making preparations and furnishing the needed equipment; but the person seeking death is the one who actually initiates the
process. By taking a “hands-off” approach to the death itself, the facilitator seeks to avoid charges of murder. Proponents of assisted suicide try for a positive spin by using terms like “death
with dignity.” But “death with dignity” is still death, “assisted suicide” is still suicide, and suicide is wrong.
We live in what is sometimes described as a “culture of death.” Abortion on demand has been practiced for decades. Now some are seriously proposing infanticide. And euthanasia is
promoted as a viable means of solving various social and financial problems. This focus on death as an answer to the world’s problems is a total reversal of the biblical model. Death is an
enemy (1 Corinthians15:26). Life is a sacred gift from God (Genesis 2:7). When given the choice between life and death, God told Israel to “choose life” (Deuteronomy 30:19). Euthanasia
spurns the gift and embraces the curse.
The overriding truth that God is sovereign drives us to the conclusion that euthanasia and assisted suicide are wrong. We know that physical death is inevitable for us mortals (Psalm 89:48;
Hebrews9:27). However, God alone is sovereign over when and how a person’s death occurs. Job testifies in Job 30:23, “I know you will bring me down to death, to the place appointed for
all the living.” Ecclesiastes 8:8 declares, “No man has power over the wind to contain it; so no one has power over the day of his death.” God has the final say over death (see 1
Corinthians 15:26, 54–56; Hebrews 2:9, 14–15; Revelation 21:4). Euthanasia and assisted suicide are man’s attempts to usurp that authority from God.
Death is a natural occurrence. Sometimes God allows a person to suffer for a long time before death occurs; other times, a person’s suffering is cut short. No one enjoys suffering, but that
does not make it right to determine that a person should die. Often, God’s purposes are made known through suffering. “When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad,
consider: God has made the one as well as the other” (Ecclesiastes 7:14). Romans 5:3 teaches that tribulations bring about perseverance. God cares about those who cry out for death and
wish to end their suffering. God gives purpose in life even to the end. Only God knows what is best, and His timing, even in the matter of one’s death, is perfect.
We should never seek to prematurely end a life, but neither must we go to extraordinary means to preserve a life. To actively hasten death is wrong; to passively withhold treatment can
also be wrong; but to allow death to occur naturally in a terminally ill person is not necessarily wrong. Anyone facing this issue should pray to God for wisdom (James 1:5). And we should all
remember the words of former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, who warned that the practice of medicine “cannot be both our healer and our killer” (from KOOP, The Memoirs of
America’s Family Doctor by C. Everett Koop, M.D., Random House, 1991).
