Matisse created cutouts late in his life when he was ill and confined to his bed. He would cut colorful paper shapes and overlap them to create compositions, which he called "drawing with scissors." For a chapel in France, Matisse designed stained glass windows, tile murals, and vestments using small paper models. His cutout works often featured organic shapes in bright colors layered to form scenes from nature or stories.
