Senior high school implementation

  1. Rita S. Reyes SSP – IV/Discussant
  2. And what is it exactly we aim to achieve? It is easy to fixate on the obvious with regard to the K to 12 Basic Education Program. Yes, together we will make early childhood education a reality for all Filipinos and not just for those who can afford to pay. Yes, together we will fundamentally reform the basic education curriculum so that our learners have a true mastery of basic competencies and a more deliberate path to the world of work and entrepreneurship or are better prepared for higher learning. Br. Armin F. Luistro, FSC Secretary Department of Education
  3. COMPARISON OF THE OLD CURRICULUM AND K TO 12 EDUCATION BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM (BEC) 2002 BEC is restructuring of the NESC (1983) and the NESC (1989) in order to raise the quality of Filipino Learners and graduates and empower them for lifelong learning. 2010 SECONDARY EDUCATION CURRICULUM The 2010 Secondary Education Curriculum (SEC) is the revised 2002 BEC incorporating Understanding by Design (UbD) which seeks to contribute to functional literacy for all and the development of 21st Century core skills needed for global competitiveness. K TO 12 CURRICULUM 2012 The K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum is geared towards the development of holistically developed Filipino with 21st Century skills who is ready for employment, entrepreneurship, middle skills, middle level skills development and higher education upon graduation.
  4. The K to 12 Basic Education Program The K to 12 Program covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education (six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts and skills, develop life long learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education, middle level skills development, employment and entrepreneurship.
  5. K to 12 Structure 2002 BEC CURRICULUM 17 to 18 years old Senior High School Grades 11 to 12 High School Year 1 to 4 12 to 16 years old Junior High School Grades 7 to 10 Elementary Grades 1 to 6 6 to 11 years old Elementary Grades 1 to 6 Optional Pre School Education 5 years old Mandatory Kindergarten
  6. Strengthening Early Childhood Education (Universal Kindergarten) Building Proficiency through Language (Mother Tongue Based Bilingual Education Making the Curriculum Relevant to Learners (Contextualization and Enhancement) Gearing Up for the Future (Senior High School) Ensuring Integrated and Seamless Learning (Spiral Progression) Nurturing the Holistically Developed Filipino (College and Livelihood Readiness, 21st Century Skills
  7. GEARING UP FOR THE FUTURE (Senior High School) Senior High School is two years of specialized upper secondary education; students may choose a career track based on aptitude, interests and school capacity. The choice of career track will define the content of the subjects a student take in Grades 11 and 12. These subjects fall under the Core Curriculum or Career Pathways.
  8. CORE CURRICULUM There are six subjects under the Core Curriculum. These are Humanities, Languages (English and/or Filipino), Math, Philosophy, Science and Social Sciences. Current content from some General Education subjects are embedded in the SHS Curriculum.
  9. CAREER PATHWAYS Each student in Senior High School can choose among different tracks:
  10. Students undergo On – the – Job Training or immersion, which may include earn – while – you learn opportunities, to provide them relevant exposure and actual experience in their chosen track.
  11. TVET (Technical Vocational Education & Training) National Certificate After finishing Grade 10, a student can obtain Certificates of Competency (COC) or a National Certificate Level (NC I). After finishing a Technical Vocational Track in Grade 12, a student may obtain a National Certificate Level II (NC II), provided he/she passes the competency based assessment of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). NC I and NC II improves employability of graduates in fields like Agriculture, Electronics and Trade.
  12. NURTURING THE HOLISTICALLY DEVELOPED FILIPINO (COLLEGE AND LIVELIHOOD READINESS, 21ST CENTURY SKILLS) After going through Kindergarten, the enhanced Elementary and Junior Curriculum, and a specialized Senior High Program, every K to 12 graduate will be ready to go into different paths – may it be further education, employment, or entrepreneurship.
