  18. 18. Science 2.0 : some aspects • Communities & collaboration powered by web 2.0 • Resources: creating, storing, organising, sharing, exchange, distribution, browsing, searching, re-use, enrich, re-create • Faster, more efficient, greater competetiveness, repeatable, more productive … • Enables open feedback and reviews of work • A machine-understandable format allows others to take the data and analyze it independently
  19. 19. What are Researchers looking for (on the Web)? • Tools for improving their workflow, to gain efficiency • Communication, sharing, collaboration, dissemination research ideas and output • to possibly get bigger recognition and reward of their research output

  • Coordinator, no editor, no reviewer, although second life..
Author.... Well, nothing compared to previous speakers
    facilitating
  • Still very Exited to work here
Dynamic, combination heath care, education and research inside this house.
Processes that all basically all evolve around INFoRMATION!,
    Research, authors
But also excited because what is going on outside!
    Great place, exciting environment
    Inside but also outside!
  • Medical library CMB, beautiful place where mainly students use our facilities en services in the physical library.
Staff is mainly using the digital library
But there is a huge part of our services, resources and tool, digital library,
  • At bottom, traditional library services and role
    At top: Into The Workflow
  • The cause or at least an important cause is the Web. I want to show what scientist are doing and looking for on the Internet and why
  • Trends!!!
The introduction of the HP IPAQ as standard mobile phone in hospital was a breakthrough. Doctors, specialist Researchers can be pretty independent, and IT standards in a large organisation can be pretty restrictive, or at least lacking a bit behind in latest innovations...
    Anyone recognizes this?
With this phone they were abled to manage things themselves, email became portable, accessible outside, schedule/calendar, and .... The web!
Web 2.0 gave users even more control and creativity to make things work their way...
This was the time of the so-called "pirate" era
  • It are these things that actually invite researchers.
Jisc Libraries of the Future Debate 2009, he also said the researchers are bypassing the library… he mentioned a scientist that was actually mainly using the offered space and tools by the publisher, and the web. And wasn’t been in the library for quite a time. Physicall or digitally
The effect is not as strong in all areas of science. Roughly you could say that probably it is related to the percentage of electronically available content in the field. In science and medical science in particular the perception of the library.
  • When I was at a meeting of our Epidemiology Department in a room full with researchers, student and medical staff. I was there to talk about new services and resources. First problem is a common know problem, Library disconnect, unaware, wrong perception of library services and content, invisibility of the library. I had a hard time explaining why they should not only use Google Scholar, and also why some content on the web, seemingly freely available on the web was not all fulltext available for them. They told me they have various ways and systems to get what they want, .. But without going to the library. Hard to find, hard to use, too much, convusing, while it all seems to be out there on the web, for free and easy to use…
Which brings me to the second related problem. Not only are they disconnecting from the library, but also are they getting the information elsewhere or arranging &making it themselves. They bypass the library completely there. We want to do something about that.
  • I'de like to know if this is simular to your organisations?
The amount of external corporate cms activity is an indication for the level of user-driven IT-development and support ( or the lack of it)
  • Science 2.0 research 2.0
    Open science ....
  • What are they looking for?
    So much to choose!
  • Where is innovation and web stuff influences workflow of research?
Where is the connection with the library, my focus!
You will see a couple of services and tools in a short while!
  • What are they looking for?
    So much to choose!
  • Its about choice. The user chooses.
And the library facilitates, advices, keeps them in the loop on the options
  • Research Data Management
A special service department in the UMCG is created to support research in statistical, technical and other ways, for, in most cases clinical studies and projects, http://tcc.umcg.nl/en/26/Statistiek.html. (this not related to the library)
For data management they never thought of the library as possible partner, neither for selection or critical appraisal of literature, or for making publications lists available etc.
  • The idea
My main belief is still that libraries will never be no 1 on the priority list of any researcher; the actual research will always be his primary focus. Stuff that libraries do or supply can only marginally contribute to his work directly.
If we understand this complex process of research in detail, we will be able to identify where exactly libraries can facilitate.
Basically i think the primary workflow of the individual researcher is a good way to start
A few years ago we were not involved in any support to researchers specifically, other than the document delivery system.
Research programs and departments can work very autonomic and because of separate financing they like to act pretty independent.
  • Put all information relevant in a start page
  • Doing research
    Publishing
    Tools
  • Had to put the lists on myuniversity, preapring them for Intranet UMCG, but if you want any, just email cmb@umcg.nl
  • Search Help
We started with targeting researchers with specific help:
Setting up initial search strategies, advice database selections, and setting up alerts
Help with the creation of systematic reviews & clinical trials, as far as this was related to search and appraisal.
Offering workshops in evidence based medicine, improving search skills, reference management.

  • Integration & embedding
We are (just now)  involved in the new Electronic Patient Record System.  (EPD) to think about integration of scientific literature or any library services/licenses, for improve the updating mechanism for instance protocols, but also to support the research activities, collecting data during patient care. We don’t want researchers (but not only them of course) have to leave this system to go and search for literature. Relevant here is also the selection, saving, re-use of references & lists.

  • ¥ Two of our colleagues talk on regular basis with educational and research coordinators across all departments of the UMCG. These tours take two years before returning to the first department again. Almost every visit generates new tasks or request, workshops, demos etc.
  • Search Smarter with Google
Google is the most used search engine, but most users don't use its full power. Learn how to search more effectively with Google in this short , practical workshop
  • iPad on Loan
¥ The iPad on loan project introduced also researchers to this new innovative instrument, giving them more control, and even new ideas to reorganize work. How they can be more efficient, working towards paperless meetings. The library is now seen by many in the hospital as a partner to take part in many projects touching it- and information management. Working together in these projects giving advice & input about the needs of users (including researchers) is very rewarding and boost again the perception of the library in general. We advise individuals in relevant apps and technology to help their workflow, communication, writing, searching etc.
  • Support the Research Office
We help the Research Office in creating their research output overview and analysis tools.
We advise them in new possibilities and developments that can influence their workflow to improve quality or efficiency.
  • ¥ Research UMCG Twitter account publishing research output, events, PHD-ceremonies, press releases... https://twitter.com/researchumcg
  • What we know is a challenge for everybody ....
So many options besides just letting your email box getting crammped by alerts
  • Comparison, early 2013
    Institutions registration, free
    Start ups
    3 months
    Support for all 4
  • Browzine app, tablet & smartphones including android and iphone
Thinking of a web version too!
  • Workshop focus on research support.
    getting to know researchers
one-on-one, get out of the library
