Essay on Why Is Religion Important?
"Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life."
–– Buddha
"So I say to you, Ask and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will
be opened for you."
––Jesus Christ
Whether you consider yourself a religious person or not, or whether you think religion has played a
positive or negative role in history, it is an incontrovertible fact that from the beginning of time,
humans have engaged in activities that we now call religion, such as worship, prayer, and rituals
marking important life passages. Moreover, religions have always asked fundamental questions,
such as: What is the true meaning of life? What happens to us after death? How do we explain human
suffering and...show more content...
By studying different religious doctrines, rituals, stories, and scriptures, we can also come to
understand how different communities of believers–past and present, East and West–have used their
religious traditions to shape, sustain, transform themselves.
More than ever before, the world we live in is both multicultural and global. We no longer need to
travel across the ocean to visit a Hindu temple or an Islamic mosque or to meet a Sikh or a Jain.
The chances are that you can find a temple or mosque within a few miles of where you live, and it
is almost certain that you will be meet someone from any and all of these religious traditions on
campus or on the street. This makes it even more essential that we cultivate our ability to understand
and interpret other people's religious traditions.
Finally, the academic study of religion is inherently multidisciplinary. This is reflected in our
program here at Washington University, which draws faculty from different disciplines in the
humanities and the social sciences, such as history, anthropology, literature, art history, and political
science. Studying religion thus provides you an opportunity to learn about a range of disciplinary
approaches, and, even more

Essay Christianity
Christianity is the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Most followers of
Christianity, called Christians, are members of one of three major groups––Roman Catholic,
Protestant, or Eastern Orthodox. These groups have different beliefs about Jesus and His teachings.
But all consider Jesus central to their religion. Most Christians believe God sent Jesus into the world
as the Savior. Christianity teaches that humanity can achieve salvation through Jesus. Jesus lived in
Judea (later called Palestine), a Middle Eastern land ruled by the Romans. The Romans crucified
Jesus about A.D. 30. Jesus' followers were convinced that He rose from the dead, and they soon
spread Christianity to major cities throughout the...show more content...
Two practices important to Christian worship usually take place in churches. These practices are
(1) baptism and (2) the Eucharist, also called Holy Communion or the Lord's Supper. The
ceremony of baptism celebrates an individual's entrance into Christianity. The Eucharist
represents the Last Supper, the final meal that Jesus shared with His disciples. Worshipers share
bread and wine in the Eucharist as a sign of their unity with each other and with Jesus. Christians
see Jesus as continuous with the God of Judaism. A collection of Christian writings was added to
the Jewish scriptures known as the Old Testament, or Hebrew Bible. The Christian writings,
called the New Testament, record the life and teachings of Jesus. They also describe the
development of the early church and explain what faith in Jesus means. The Christian Bible
includes both the Old and New Testaments. Some Christian groups also accept as part of the Bible
a collection of writings called the Apocrypha. The origin of Christianity Jesus' ministry.
Christianity originated in the ministry of Jesus. During His lifetime, Jesus preached the gospel,
meaning good news, that God was coming to earth to be among His people in a special way. Jesus
called this special way the Kingdom of God. He warned His listeners to repent their sinful ways to
be ready for the approaching Kingdom of God. In urging

Reflection Paper On Religion And Religion
When asked the question on my definition of religion, I decided to look at it in a way that goes
beyond just my religion. Religion goes much deeper than being something that we just believe in,
it is a relationship or a part of a person's culture. My purpose of religion is something for me to try
and understand what my goal in life is, as well as building a relationship with a higher being.
Religion gives people that higher being that they can look to for guidance and comfort. I feel that
you can also express your culture through religion as well as explain some of the reasons for some
of the things that you have done in your life. My religious beliefs go deeper than what I am about
to tell you but for the most part my beliefs are that I have a God that I put my trust in to guide me
through this crazy world and bring me to be something more than I could ever begin to
understand. I view my beliefs as part of a relationship. I believe that you are responsible for your
actions and if you sin that is between you and God to work through. I believe that word of God
should be shared with all the world and that it should be done so in a way that it does not make it
seem that I am trying to shove my religion down someone's throat. My religion does include a
belief in God and the concept of God is that he is the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. He is the
ultimate healer and provider. God is someone that I have a relationship with; someone I can go to
when I need to get things off of my

Reflection Paper On Religion And Religion
During the course of this class, I have learned a lot about different religions. I still have an
unprejudiced view of religion. However, I did not suspend my belief to have an understanding of
religion. I have been able to learn of other religious beliefs without feeling threatened of my own. I
found there are many different practices in other religions, some I agree with and some I do not
agree with. I have come to except others, ways of worship without getting upset. I have become
humble in my conclusion now that I have a better understanding of others beliefs. The world seems
to jump to conclusions and be judgmental about other religions. Postponing ones judgement on a
religion is a difficult thing to do. Being raised and taught a certain religion and set of beliefs is
distilled in to one's mind. I, on the other hand, reserved my personal judgement until I have
learned more about it. I have come to know of religions other than my own, and each has different
ways of worship. By taking the time to learn the different religions of the world has helped me
with understanding what others believe. In learning of others beliefs will help me in recognizing
the way they dress, act and respond. Religion runs deep in different cultures all over the world, and
with many it is sacred, symbolic, and law. Religion brings people together in time of need such as
deaths, destruction or pain, also in celebration of birth and marriage.

Essay on Why Is Religion Important?
In this essay we will discuss the importance of religion in society. We will attempt to explain why
societies have religions and what functions their belief system has for them. We will also ask if these
functions are now out–dated and if religions have any meaningful function in today's world or are
they just stained glass windows into a bygone era? 'Religion' can be defined by two main groupings.
'The inclusive definition' covers all topics and subjects of a persons life including, not only, their
belief in a deity but also their belief and belongingness to music, sport and any other interests the
person may hold. 'The exclusive definition' refers to just their belief system regarding a
'supra–human' (Browne 2005, p. 311). It is mainly...show more content...
The church was able to explain why such devastation had happened and gave the social masses an
explanation to something they could not fathom. The church used this opportunity to gain the
respect and belief of the Irish public (Larkin 1984). Religious identity can come in two forms, one
from a nation of people all believing in the same values and another from the personal view of
each individual or family within that nation. In a family or local community sense, it ties the
smaller community together against its neighbouring ethnicities. It provides a feeling of
togetherness and strength for the society. It is the basis for 'ethnic honour: the excellence of one's
own customs and the inferiority of alien ones' (Weber, cited in Bruce 1996, p. 96). Religious
identity brings great pride and hope to the citizens of any particular society and lends itself
towards social cohesion (Browne 2005). In a national sense, religious belief and identity can
separate whole nations from one another, like in the case of Ireland and England, one of the
defining differences is our belief in a different branch of Christianity. This can have disastrous
effects on the world as a whole. Religion can be held accountable for the majority of warfare and
bloodshed in the world today as nations attack each over their differing beliefs and ideals. Many
nations will use religion and beliefs to try to justify the awful atrocities they commit on one another.
In this sense, religion

Essay on Religion is a Set of Beliefs
"Religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially
when considering religion as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving
devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of
human affairs", as stated by Webster's dictionary.1Religion is basically the belief in a higher being
who controls the life of the people, and ultimately decides the fate of a being after death. There
about 21 major religions today each with thousands of different denominations, this branched from
under them. Christianity is responsible for 32 of them by itself! There are so many different
religions because of the difference of opinion in beliefs, and in...show more content...
First there are those who have monotheistic views. Religions with a monotheistic view believe in
only one God only and believe that he is the only true creator and that the people should obey that
God and forsake all other Gods.
There are also polytheistic religions, these religions believe in more than one God. They believe
that there are different Gods that control certain aspects of life, for example Greeks had Zeus the
God of the sky and rain, and Hades who was the God of the under world.2 Greek Gods seem to have
a sense of checks and balances to make the world run.
Some religions have what is called a Mandate of Heaven, in which a human being is appointed as
a God and worshipped. The ancient Mayans had a practice similar to this. Their king would shed
the blood of his queen as well as himself from the tongue and genitals in order to bring prosperity
among their people and their lands.
There are even some philosophies of life that have no faith in a religion at all. These people are
known as atheist, scientologist, etc. They generally believe in the theory of evolution as a reason
for man's existence today. The theory of evolution is the belief that man slowly evolved from a
single cell organism over billions of years as the earth progressed. Charles Darwin claimed that
organisms adapted to the environment over time in order to survive, with each generation being
better than the one that preceded it. The only binding factor in

Reflection On Religious Education
INTRODUCTION:
In this essay, I am going to discuss religious education under various topic headings including R.E
and the R.E teacher, World Religions and morality and ethics. Through attending lectures and
seminars, I have learned a lot about the Religious Education system in Ireland and further afield.
Furthermore, in my reflective journal, I have reflected on a world of possibilities of what religion
means to me. Throughout the year, my opinions on certain topics has changed, or has strengthen
and I feel the reflective journal has helped me. In the essay, I am hoping to include reflections,
readings and my experiences from the lectures and seminars to discover the various of topics.

"Religion is a ritualized system of beliefs and practices related to things defined as sacred by an
organized community of believers." (Basirico et.al. 379). Religion is an important element in the
society because it influences the way individuals act and think. It has shaped the relationship and
bonding among families as well as influenced the decision made in economics and politics. Religion
in general has contributed to shape a society and a government structure which will influence the
way the individuals under certain governmental structure behave. Sociologists are interested in

However, no matter how sociologists and scientists view religion, there are a lot of people who
will still believe in their own religion and that there exists a power that science cannot explain. For
example, in an Islamic country such as Indonesia, government is organized base on what is
appropriate according to Islam. Even though, there are a lot of people questions the existence of
supernatural power and hundreds of books publish that study the scientific view of religion,
government and people in that country still believe in their religions. Students at school also
study about science and sociological perspective toward religion and almost every student still

speech is allowed and knowledge can be shared quickly by internet, every person in US knows
about scientific study of religion but Christianity is still emphasized in everyday life. People may

Essay on Religions of the World
The Religions of the World Religion is big part of human life. Every area of the world has some
kind of religion or belief system. Religion is defined as "a personal set or institutionalized system
of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices" ("Religion" Def.2). With such a large amount of
religions today, religion is widely variegated, usually with divisions in each one. Despite the large
amount of religions, I will only be covering only three religions: Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism.
Christians are those who believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came down to earth from
Heaven in order to save humanity from its' sins. The reason for Jesus dying for the human race is

His entire life was devoted to delivering the message that God had given Him, the theme of which
was forgiveness and a new life, in which we could have eternal life through the death of Christ
(John 3:16). His means of sharing this message were often in parables, "earthly stories with
heavenly meanings," but at other times they were blunt and straightforward (Bowker 141). There
was much division among the people because of Him, and the religious leaders of the time wanted
to kill Him, mainly because He claimed to be Son of God, while He looked like any other human to
them (John 7:8–9, 8:40–53). Their anger rose and, eventually, they set out to capture Him and
crucify Him. Jesus' Death was a tragic event indeed. There was so much division about Him that
His own people had decided to vote in favor of crucifying Him, and that is exactly what happened
(John 19:6–7). Jesus was lead to Golgotha, while carrying His own cross, to be crucified. As
horrific as this was for many, it fulfilled all the scriptures pointing to Jesus. Because He had lived
a sinless life, He became the perfect and final sacrifice for humanities' sin (1 Peter 2:22). Jesus
was raised on the third day after His death, showing His supremacy over the power of Death.
Obviously, a main belief of Christians is that of Jesus' death and resurrection. Christians also
believe in the teachings Jesus' gave them while He lived His life on the earth, which are recorded in
the four gospels in the New Testament

Science and Religion Essays
Science and religion have always been in conflict with one another because they each represent
complete opposite ideals, science is about how nature controls how the universe works and religion
is about how God controls how the universe works. In the five models on science and religion I
believe that Conflict best describes the relationship between the two. Conflict tells how either
science is completely right and religion is wrong or the other way around and that religion and
science are completely different. It also tells on how many scientists are religious and may be
inspired be many religious ideals but on the other side is that if God created the universe he also

I'm my opinion since God is the creator of the universe and all life then he is the creator of
science as well. There are four other models that explain the relationship between science and
religion but in my opinion they do not explain the relationship between the two. Independence
tells how the two are complete opposites which is true but it also says that religion seeks to
explain experiences of inner life which I don't believe to be true. Religion does try to explain
experiences of inner life but it's much more than just that, religion tries to explain how and why
were created, how God created the world, and what purpose do serve on this earth. Complimentary
tells how science and religion benefit each other and that information from one enriches the other. I
don't think this model fits at all because I believe that the two are completely different and do not
enrich or fulfill one another. I believe that in the world there opposites to everything, good and evil,
white and black and science and religion. The only way science and religion compliment the other is
to be the opposite of the other.
Integration is the model that tells how science

Religion and Psychology Essay example
Religious faith is important to most Americans, with approximately 95% of Americans reporting
belief in God and about 50% being active in church organizations (Gallup & Castelli, 1989).
Despite the widespread prevalence of religious beliefs in society, some researchers have maintained
that religion and religious beliefs are often neglected in psychological research (Jones, 1994; Plante,
1996). This neglect stems from a couple of different factors. First, it is difficult for psychologists to
overcome the fact that believers in many religions claim to have unique access to the truth. Secondly,
truly theological questions such as the existence of God or the nature of an afterlife are often ignored
by scientists. This may be in part a...show more content...
For example, William James studied religious experience and suggested that the spiritual process
works to curtail people's negative behaviors (James, 1936). For James, spirituality helps
individuals recognize their own earthly suffering as either a consequence of individual pathology
or addictive behavior, or both. When people begin to criticize or consciously reject problematic
individual behaviors as a permanent way of being, then they become open to the possibility of
rising to a higher awareness. This higher awareness of his or her own behavior is then integrated as
a part of the person's psychology. James was already considering the role religion plays in a person's
consciousness early in the twentieth century.
Alfred Adler, another pioneer of psychology, believed that our ideas about God are important
indicators of how we view the world (Ansbacher H., & Ansbacher R., 1956). According to Adler
these ideas have changed over time as our vision of the world and our place in it has changed.
Adler suggested religion was of importance because our view of God embodies our goals and
directs our social interactions. Compared to science, Adler believed that religion was more advanced
because it motivates people more

Growing up, church was never a huge aspect of my life, but it was always around me. My

What Is Religion? Essay
What is religion? Each person's definition of religion is different. Each person's faith is different.
This is a question that has been asked for centuries, and regardless of the answer given there is no
right or wrong answer. Religion can be defined as a group of people who have shared beliefs who
feel their life has purpose or meaning. This feeling or belief that their life has meaning can come
from outside of themselves, as well as within. Taking this one step further, these shared beliefs put
into action in the form of worship, can be easily identified because they happen regularly. It can be

They are teachings learned by previous generations then passed down, they are not always

assurance that reality is on our side and can be counted on." Lastly there is mystery. For this there
is no exact definition, but it is all of what a religion cannot explain, it is all that the human mind
cannot grasp, it is the certain "higher power" that religion offers. Of these six features, there are
three that are present in most all religions, they are: authority, tradition, and mystery. Authority,
tradition, and mystery further explore and define religion when looking specifically at Primal
Religions, Confucianism, and Taoism. Primal Religions are often mistaken to be the religion of the
primitive man, often thought to be unintelligent. There is a definition of "primal" that is better
suited than unintelligent or primitive. Primal in terms of religion, refers to the lack of exposure to
technology, it is not "knowing" the state of consciousness given to many by the technological
environment. Primal religions preceded organized religion as we know it today by thousands of
years, in some cases millions, but are still present in the world today; we now call them tribal
religions. Within primal religions there are people who are knowledgeable about life, who are

each other, like the sacred text, symbol, and traditions. These qualities are what make each religion

Each religion has its own set of 'rules' or teachings that the followers practice. In Christianity, there

Despite that, Confucianism continues to have many followers. Two religions that are more
related than any other religions are Christianity and Judaism. Both religions have similar beliefs.
They also both believe in God and Jesus. This is where there is a difference: Christians believe
that Jesus is the Messiah and died to save its followers from sin. Jews believe that Jesus is only a
prophet, and the Messiah has not yet arrived. Another similarity is the sacred site. Jerusalem is a
sacred city for three religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In addition to Jerusalem, Islamic
people travel to Mecca and the city of Medina to pray as well. Another important site for Christians
is Bethlehem–the birthplace of Jesus.
Karma is a belief that Buddhists, Hindus, and Christians believe in. Karma is simply "what goes

reincarnation in the next life. Christians believe that karma can take place in the current life as well.
Buddhism and Hinduism also believe in dharma, which are the ethics and duties.

Essay On Religious Discrimination
There is discrimination everywhere at anytime, anywhere in the world. Discrimination can occur
in many ways due to different opinions and perspectives. One of them occurs by religion of
different people. Religious discrimination is to treat someone differently with others in a bad way
due to their religion or beliefs. There are lots of religious discrimination around the world. People
should be against religious discrimination because it keeps people from harassment on their
religious beliefs, prevent less wars happening, and people will correct their stereotypes on others.
Standing against religious discrimination will decrease harassment on different religion of different
classes. Muslim women experienced racism in workplaces. People determine others by their
appearance. Muslim women often follow rules of their own religion, but people will start isolate

they have decided to take a stand for their faith'." (Amrani). In the column, a muslim women feels
her identity has been threatened, harassed by people. But still, she chose to stand for her faith. If we

Religion, Religion And Religion
When discussing religion, many people have different perspectives about religion beliefs and how to
approach it. Religion is grouped in different sections such as, religion and spirituality, religion and
philosophy, and religion and politics. Religion has many different views from different cultures
because everyone approaches it differently with different beliefs also. To make somethingreligion, is
to have some type of belief in God, but everyone's belief is different depending on the culture
someone is located in. In society back then and today, religion has no set essence of a definition
because of the different aspects people group religion in. This paper will explain the different
aspects of what people believe constitutes different types of religion. The different approaches in
how many people define religion gives different effects on how people actually group the word in
different categories. According to the book "introduction to the study of religion" the authors gives a
brief statement about how religion is interpreted. They state two definitions "1. Religion is
awareness expressed through symbols of relationship to, or participation in, the fundamental power
of life. And 2. Religions are symbol systems that facilitate relationship to, or participation in, what
the members understand to be the fundamental power of life." (Ring, Nash, MacDonald, and
Glenmon, p 79). This explanation the book gives explains why it is so difficult to define religion.

executive order issued by the US. Likewise, on September 11th, 2001, a group of Muslim
terrorists hijacked a plane, killing thousands. In present day, people only connected to them by
their religion are still being judged for actions they didn't perform. Another situation in which
bigotry occurred was in World War II. The Nazi Party attempted to gain control of many European
and Asian countries, all the while trying to rid the world of races and religions they saw as inferior.
Now the Neo–Nazis have the right to march freely and spread their hateful messages. Religious
intolerance is a pressing issue, causing harrassment, inequality, violence, and

Abstract A look at religion, its beliefs and fallacies that throughout history have continued to have
negative effects on contemporary society. The usefulness of religion is in the past, and its
foundational books are fables. It is a man–made imposition which has been an enemy of science and
inquiry. Religion has subsisted largely on lies and fears, and been the accomplice of ignorance and
guilt as well as of slavery, genocide, racism, and tyranny.
George Carlin once said "I worship the sun for several reasons. The first reason is that unlike god,
you can actually see the sun which really helps with its credibility....show more content...
I feel that grown adults have a predication to act like small children when it comes to religion, in
that they often abandon all rational thoughts of logic, and turn to what they have been taught in
their own personal sheltered religious beliefs. It's amazing how defensive people become if you
question their god, worship or religious practices, while at the same time most are taught to believe
that everyone else's opposing religious beliefs are inaccurate and that those following them will
themselves go to hell.
A huge problem I have with religious belief is that most people that call themselves faithful
followers often do not "practice what they preach". In other words people often attempt to force
religion and its strict policies onto others while they themselves are commonly the biggest violators
of its basic rules. An example would be the numerous scandals involving priests molesting young
children, or even regular Church attendants that participate in adultery, drinking, gambling and
premarital sex. I feel that if you are going to make it your practice to faithfully observe your
religion, then you should at least be capable of adhering to the standards and regulations that your
chosen faith requires of you. Don't get me wrong, there are people that follow and adhere to their
religious beliefs very closely and rarely sway from its

  • 1. Essay on Why Is Religion Important? "Just as a candle cannot burn without fire, men cannot live without a spiritual life." –– Buddha "So I say to you, Ask and it will be given to you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you." ––Jesus Christ Whether you consider yourself a religious person or not, or whether you think religion has played a positive or negative role in history, it is an incontrovertible fact that from the beginning of time, humans have engaged in activities that we now call religion, such as worship, prayer, and rituals marking important life passages. Moreover, religions have always asked fundamental questions, such as: What is the true meaning of life? What happens to us after death? How do we explain human suffering and...show more content... By studying different religious doctrines, rituals, stories, and scriptures, we can also come to understand how different communities of believers–past and present, East and West–have used their religious traditions to shape, sustain, transform themselves. More than ever before, the world we live in is both multicultural and global. We no longer need to travel across the ocean to visit a Hindu temple or an Islamic mosque or to meet a Sikh or a Jain. The chances are that you can find a temple or mosque within a few miles of where you live, and it is almost certain that you will be meet someone from any and all of these religious traditions on campus or on the street. This makes it even more essential that we cultivate our ability to understand and interpret other people's religious traditions. Finally, the academic study of religion is inherently multidisciplinary. This is reflected in our program here at Washington University, which draws faculty from different disciplines in the humanities and the social sciences, such as history, anthropology, literature, art history, and political science. Studying religion thus provides you an opportunity to learn about a range of disciplinary approaches, and, even more Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay Christianity Christianity is the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Most followers of Christianity, called Christians, are members of one of three major groups––Roman Catholic, Protestant, or Eastern Orthodox. These groups have different beliefs about Jesus and His teachings. But all consider Jesus central to their religion. Most Christians believe God sent Jesus into the world as the Savior. Christianity teaches that humanity can achieve salvation through Jesus. Jesus lived in Judea (later called Palestine), a Middle Eastern land ruled by the Romans. The Romans crucified Jesus about A.D. 30. Jesus' followers were convinced that He rose from the dead, and they soon spread Christianity to major cities throughout the...show more content... Two practices important to Christian worship usually take place in churches. These practices are (1) baptism and (2) the Eucharist, also called Holy Communion or the Lord's Supper. The ceremony of baptism celebrates an individual's entrance into Christianity. The Eucharist represents the Last Supper, the final meal that Jesus shared with His disciples. Worshipers share bread and wine in the Eucharist as a sign of their unity with each other and with Jesus. Christians see Jesus as continuous with the God of Judaism. A collection of Christian writings was added to the Jewish scriptures known as the Old Testament, or Hebrew Bible. The Christian writings, called the New Testament, record the life and teachings of Jesus. They also describe the development of the early church and explain what faith in Jesus means. The Christian Bible includes both the Old and New Testaments. Some Christian groups also accept as part of the Bible a collection of writings called the Apocrypha. The origin of Christianity Jesus' ministry. Christianity originated in the ministry of Jesus. During His lifetime, Jesus preached the gospel, meaning good news, that God was coming to earth to be among His people in a special way. Jesus called this special way the Kingdom of God. He warned His listeners to repent their sinful ways to be ready for the approaching Kingdom of God. In urging Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Reflection Paper On Religion And Religion When asked the question on my definition of religion, I decided to look at it in a way that goes beyond just my religion. Religion goes much deeper than being something that we just believe in, it is a relationship or a part of a person's culture. My purpose of religion is something for me to try and understand what my goal in life is, as well as building a relationship with a higher being. Religion gives people that higher being that they can look to for guidance and comfort. I feel that you can also express your culture through religion as well as explain some of the reasons for some of the things that you have done in your life. My religious beliefs go deeper than what I am about to tell you but for the most part my beliefs are that I have a God that I put my trust in to guide me through this crazy world and bring me to be something more than I could ever begin to understand. I view my beliefs as part of a relationship. I believe that you are responsible for your actions and if you sin that is between you and God to work through. I believe that word of God should be shared with all the world and that it should be done so in a way that it does not make it seem that I am trying to shove my religion down someone's throat. My religion does include a belief in God and the concept of God is that he is the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. He is the ultimate healer and provider. God is someone that I have a relationship with; someone I can go to when I need to get things off of my Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Reflection Paper On Religion And Religion During the course of this class, I have learned a lot about different religions. I still have an unprejudiced view of religion. However, I did not suspend my belief to have an understanding of religion. I have been able to learn of other religious beliefs without feeling threatened of my own. I found there are many different practices in other religions, some I agree with and some I do not agree with. I have come to except others, ways of worship without getting upset. I have become humble in my conclusion now that I have a better understanding of others beliefs. The world seems to jump to conclusions and be judgmental about other religions. Postponing ones judgement on a religion is a difficult thing to do. Being raised and taught a certain religion and set of beliefs is distilled in to one's mind. I, on the other hand, reserved my personal judgement until I have learned more about it. I have come to know of religions other than my own, and each has different ways of worship. By taking the time to learn the different religions of the world has helped me with understanding what others believe. In learning of others beliefs will help me in recognizing the way they dress, act and respond. Religion runs deep in different cultures all over the world, and with many it is sacred, symbolic, and law. Religion brings people together in time of need such as deaths, destruction or pain, also in celebration of birth and marriage. • 5. Essay on Why Is Religion Important? In this essay we will discuss the importance of religion in society. We will attempt to explain why societies have religions and what functions their belief system has for them. We will also ask if these functions are now out–dated and if religions have any meaningful function in today's world or are they just stained glass windows into a bygone era? 'Religion' can be defined by two main groupings. 'The inclusive definition' covers all topics and subjects of a persons life including, not only, their belief in a deity but also their belief and belongingness to music, sport and any other interests the person may hold. 'The exclusive definition' refers to just their belief system regarding a 'supra–human' (Browne 2005, p. 311). It is mainly...show more content... The church was able to explain why such devastation had happened and gave the social masses an explanation to something they could not fathom. The church used this opportunity to gain the respect and belief of the Irish public (Larkin 1984). Religious identity can come in two forms, one from a nation of people all believing in the same values and another from the personal view of each individual or family within that nation. In a family or local community sense, it ties the smaller community together against its neighbouring ethnicities. It provides a feeling of togetherness and strength for the society. It is the basis for 'ethnic honour: the excellence of one's own customs and the inferiority of alien ones' (Weber, cited in Bruce 1996, p. 96). Religious identity brings great pride and hope to the citizens of any particular society and lends itself towards social cohesion (Browne 2005). In a national sense, religious belief and identity can separate whole nations from one another, like in the case of Ireland and England, one of the defining differences is our belief in a different branch of Christianity. This can have disastrous effects on the world as a whole. Religion can be held accountable for the majority of warfare and bloodshed in the world today as nations attack each over their differing beliefs and ideals. Many nations will use religion and beliefs to try to justify the awful atrocities they commit on one another. In this sense, religion Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay on Religion is a Set of Beliefs "Religion is a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, especially when considering religion as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies, usually involving devotional and ritual observances, and often containing a moral code governing the conduct of human affairs", as stated by Webster's dictionary.1Religion is basically the belief in a higher being who controls the life of the people, and ultimately decides the fate of a being after death. There about 21 major religions today each with thousands of different denominations, this branched from under them. Christianity is responsible for 32 of them by itself! There are so many different religions because of the difference of opinion in beliefs, and in...show more content... First there are those who have monotheistic views. Religions with a monotheistic view believe in only one God only and believe that he is the only true creator and that the people should obey that God and forsake all other Gods. There are also polytheistic religions, these religions believe in more than one God. They believe that there are different Gods that control certain aspects of life, for example Greeks had Zeus the God of the sky and rain, and Hades who was the God of the under world.2 Greek Gods seem to have a sense of checks and balances to make the world run. Some religions have what is called a Mandate of Heaven, in which a human being is appointed as a God and worshipped. The ancient Mayans had a practice similar to this. Their king would shed the blood of his queen as well as himself from the tongue and genitals in order to bring prosperity among their people and their lands. There are even some philosophies of life that have no faith in a religion at all. These people are known as atheist, scientologist, etc. They generally believe in the theory of evolution as a reason for man's existence today. The theory of evolution is the belief that man slowly evolved from a single cell organism over billions of years as the earth progressed. Charles Darwin claimed that organisms adapted to the environment over time in order to survive, with each generation being better than the one that preceded it. • 8. Reflection On Religious Education INTRODUCTION: In this essay, I am going to discuss religious education under various topic headings including R.E and the R.E teacher, World Religions and morality and ethics. Through attending lectures and seminars, I have learned a lot about the Religious Education system in Ireland and further afield. Furthermore, in my reflective journal, I have reflected on a world of possibilities of what religion means to me. Throughout the year, my opinions on certain topics has changed, or has strengthen and I feel the reflective journal has helped me. In the essay, I am hoping to include reflections, readings and my experiences from the lectures and seminars to discover the various of topics. THE CONTEXT OF RE IN IRELAND & FURTHER AFIELD A considerable amount of research has been carried out on what should be taught in religious education, and how it should be taught in classrooms. This is a way I would like religion to be taught throughout all schools in Ireland, as it includes children of all religion, but it leaves the option of sacraments to the parents. • 10. "Religion is a ritualized system of beliefs and practices related to things defined as sacred by an organized community of believers." (Basirico et.al. 379). Religion is an important element in the society because it influences the way individuals act and think. It has shaped the relationship and bonding among families as well as influenced the decision made in economics and politics. Religion in general has contributed to shape a society and a government structure which will influence the way the individuals under certain governmental structure behave. Sociologists are interested in religion mainly because religious belief is heavily rooted in individuals' lives and it helps sociologists to interpret human's actions, expression, and...show more content... However, no matter how sociologists and scientists view religion, there are a lot of people who will still believe in their own religion and that there exists a power that science cannot explain. For example, in an Islamic country such as Indonesia, government is organized base on what is appropriate according to Islam. Even though, there are a lot of people questions the existence of supernatural power and hundreds of books publish that study the scientific view of religion, government and people in that country still believe in their religions. Students at school also study about science and sociological perspective toward religion and almost every student still believe in their religion and practice it in their societies. Moreover, in US where freedom of speech is allowed and knowledge can be shared quickly by internet, every person in US knows about scientific study of religion but Christianity is still emphasized in everyday life. People may only view sociological and scientific perspective of religion as one of the knowledge that need to be known but doesn't have to be practiced. • 11. Essay on Religions of the World The Religions of the World Religion is big part of human life. Every area of the world has some kind of religion or belief system. Religion is defined as "a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices" ("Religion" Def.2). With such a large amount of religions today, religion is widely variegated, usually with divisions in each one. Despite the large amount of religions, I will only be covering only three religions: Christianity, Islam, and Buddhism. Christians are those who believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who came down to earth from Heaven in order to save humanity from its' sins. The reason for Jesus dying for the human race is traced back to the beginning of time, in the Garden of...show more content... His entire life was devoted to delivering the message that God had given Him, the theme of which was forgiveness and a new life, in which we could have eternal life through the death of Christ (John 3:16). His means of sharing this message were often in parables, "earthly stories with heavenly meanings," but at other times they were blunt and straightforward (Bowker 141). There was much division among the people because of Him, and the religious leaders of the time wanted to kill Him, mainly because He claimed to be Son of God, while He looked like any other human to them (John 7:8–9, 8:40–53). Their anger rose and, eventually, they set out to capture Him and crucify Him. Jesus' Death was a tragic event indeed. There was so much division about Him that His own people had decided to vote in favor of crucifying Him, and that is exactly what happened (John 19:6–7). Jesus was lead to Golgotha, while carrying His own cross, to be crucified. As horrific as this was for many, it fulfilled all the scriptures pointing to Jesus. Because He had lived a sinless life, He became the perfect and final sacrifice for humanities' sin (1 Peter 2:22). Jesus was raised on the third day after His death, showing His supremacy over the power of Death. Obviously, a main belief of Christians is that of Jesus' death and resurrection. Christians also believe in the teachings Jesus' gave them while He lived His life on the earth, which are recorded in the four gospels in the New Testament Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Science and Religion Essays Science and religion have always been in conflict with one another because they each represent complete opposite ideals, science is about how nature controls how the universe works and religion is about how God controls how the universe works. In the five models on science and religion I believe that Conflict best describes the relationship between the two. Conflict tells how either science is completely right and religion is wrong or the other way around and that religion and science are completely different. It also tells on how many scientists are religious and may be inspired be many religious ideals but on the other side is that if God created the universe he also created the rules that go with it....show more content... I'm my opinion since God is the creator of the universe and all life then he is the creator of science as well. There are four other models that explain the relationship between science and religion but in my opinion they do not explain the relationship between the two. Independence tells how the two are complete opposites which is true but it also says that religion seeks to explain experiences of inner life which I don't believe to be true. Religion does try to explain experiences of inner life but it's much more than just that, religion tries to explain how and why were created, how God created the world, and what purpose do serve on this earth. Complimentary tells how science and religion benefit each other and that information from one enriches the other. I don't think this model fits at all because I believe that the two are completely different and do not enrich or fulfill one another. I believe that in the world there opposites to everything, good and evil, white and black and science and religion. The only way science and religion compliment the other is to be the opposite of the other. Integration is the model that tells how science Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 13. Religion and Psychology Essay example Religious faith is important to most Americans, with approximately 95% of Americans reporting belief in God and about 50% being active in church organizations (Gallup & Castelli, 1989). Despite the widespread prevalence of religious beliefs in society, some researchers have maintained that religion and religious beliefs are often neglected in psychological research (Jones, 1994; Plante, 1996). This neglect stems from a couple of different factors. First, it is difficult for psychologists to overcome the fact that believers in many religions claim to have unique access to the truth. Secondly, truly theological questions such as the existence of God or the nature of an afterlife are often ignored by scientists. This may be in part a...show more content... For example, William James studied religious experience and suggested that the spiritual process works to curtail people's negative behaviors (James, 1936). For James, spirituality helps individuals recognize their own earthly suffering as either a consequence of individual pathology or addictive behavior, or both. When people begin to criticize or consciously reject problematic individual behaviors as a permanent way of being, then they become open to the possibility of rising to a higher awareness. This higher awareness of his or her own behavior is then integrated as a part of the person's psychology. James was already considering the role religion plays in a person's consciousness early in the twentieth century. Alfred Adler, another pioneer of psychology, believed that our ideas about God are important indicators of how we view the world (Ansbacher H., & Ansbacher R., 1956). According to Adler these ideas have changed over time as our vision of the world and our place in it has changed. Adler suggested religion was of importance because our view of God embodies our goals and directs our social interactions. Compared to science, Adler believed that religion was more advanced because it motivates people more Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 14. What Does Religion Mean To Me Essay Growing up, church was never a huge aspect of my life, but it was always around me. My grandmother was a deeply religious Catholic, and many of the kids on my street went to the church around the corner. Despite this, my mother never forced my sisters and I to go. She wanted us to choose our own beliefs. The proximity to Christianity influenced what I believe in today. I believe in God and that he created everything in the observable universe. The rest of the Bible, well, is debatable to me. Some call me an agnostic Christian, but the label doesn't matter. As long as I can find faith and solace in something when I need it, I'm happy. What I ponder the most is the final chapter: death and the afterlife. What I hope is that everyone is delivered what they...show more content... To another, they might believe it's nothing at all. Even my own personal heaven is shifting constantly, based on what I believe I deserve at that point in my life. If you had asked me as a child what my heaven was, it would be being able to wrestle with my sister without getting injured for hours on end. If you asked me after my grandmother died, it would be on her lap as I listened to childhood stories. A week later, I would have said Hell for not listening to more of them. Right now, my heaven is a road trip's summer night. Great music with great people on the highway is a lovely way to spend a teenage eternity. • 15. What Is Religion? Essay What is religion? Each person's definition of religion is different. Each person's faith is different. This is a question that has been asked for centuries, and regardless of the answer given there is no right or wrong answer. Religion can be defined as a group of people who have shared beliefs who feel their life has purpose or meaning. This feeling or belief that their life has meaning can come from outside of themselves, as well as within. Taking this one step further, these shared beliefs put into action in the form of worship, can be easily identified because they happen regularly. It can be said the Primal religions were in fact not religions. Some may argue Confucianism is not a religion. Others may say Taoism is not a...show more content... They are teachings learned by previous generations then passed down, they are not always actions. The fifth feature of religion is grace. Grace is defined by Smith as "the belief and assurance that reality is on our side and can be counted on." Lastly there is mystery. For this there is no exact definition, but it is all of what a religion cannot explain, it is all that the human mind cannot grasp, it is the certain "higher power" that religion offers. Of these six features, there are three that are present in most all religions, they are: authority, tradition, and mystery. Authority, tradition, and mystery further explore and define religion when looking specifically at Primal Religions, Confucianism, and Taoism. Primal Religions are often mistaken to be the religion of the primitive man, often thought to be unintelligent. There is a definition of "primal" that is better suited than unintelligent or primitive. Primal in terms of religion, refers to the lack of exposure to technology, it is not "knowing" the state of consciousness given to many by the technological environment. Primal religions preceded organized religion as we know it today by thousands of years, in some cases millions, but are still present in the world today; we now call them tribal religions. Within primal religions there are people who are knowledgeable about life, who are knowledgeable about Defining Religion–4 traditions, and who are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Though each religion is unique, some religions have several traits in common. For example, many religions are polytheistic, meaning that there are many gods. But, some religions only believe in one god, meaning that the religion is monotheistic. The religions also have many things that differ with each other, like the sacred text, symbol, and traditions. These qualities are what make each religion different and special. Each religion has its own set of 'rules' or teachings that the followers practice. In Christianity, there are the Ten Commandments. The Buddhist religion has the Eightfold Path and the Four Noble Truths. Muslims of the Islamic religion follow the Five Pillars of Islam. These religions have religious teachings, but there...show more content... Despite that, Confucianism continues to have many followers. Two religions that are more related than any other religions are Christianity and Judaism. Both religions have similar beliefs. They also both believe in God and Jesus. This is where there is a difference: Christians believe that Jesus is the Messiah and died to save its followers from sin. Jews believe that Jesus is only a prophet, and the Messiah has not yet arrived. Another similarity is the sacred site. Jerusalem is a sacred city for three religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In addition to Jerusalem, Islamic people travel to Mecca and the city of Medina to pray as well. Another important site for Christians is Bethlehem–the birthplace of Jesus. Karma is a belief that Buddhists, Hindus, and Christians believe in. Karma is simply "what goes around, comes around". However, Buddhists and Hindus believe that karma occurs after reincarnation in the next life. Christians believe that karma can take place in the current life as well. Buddhism and Hinduism also believe in dharma, which are the ethics and duties. Though some of these religions are related in one way or another, they each have their own sacred text that store their teachings and beliefs. The Jews follow the teachings of the Torah, which is the first five books of the Old Testament and is the cornerstone of Judaism. The Hindu text is Get more content on HelpWriting.net

One of them occurs by religion of different people. Religious discrimination is to treat someone differently with others in a bad way due to their religion or beliefs. There are lots of religious discrimination around the world. People should be against religious discrimination because it keeps people from harassment on their religious beliefs, prevent less wars happening, and people will correct their stereotypes on others. Standing against religious discrimination will decrease harassment on different religion of different classes. Muslim women experienced racism in workplaces. People determine others by their appearance. Muslim women often follow rules of their own religion, but people will start isolate Muslim women due to their religion and their habits. • 18. Religion, Religion And Religion When discussing religion, many people have different perspectives about religion beliefs and how to approach it. Religion is grouped in different sections such as, religion and spirituality, religion and philosophy, and religion and politics. Religion has many different views from different cultures because everyone approaches it differently with different beliefs also. To make somethingreligion, is to have some type of belief in God, but everyone's belief is different depending on the culture someone is located in. In society back then and today, religion has no set essence of a definition because of the different aspects people group religion in. This paper will explain the different aspects of what people believe constitutes different types of religion. The different approaches in how many people define religion gives different effects on how people actually group the word in different categories. According to the book "introduction to the study of religion" the authors gives a brief statement about how religion is interpreted. They state two definitions "1. Religion is awareness expressed through symbols of relationship to, or participation in, the fundamental power of life. And 2. Religions are symbol systems that facilitate relationship to, or participation in, what the members understand to be the fundamental power of life." (Ring, Nash, MacDonald, and Glenmon, p 79). This explanation the book gives explains why it is so difficult to define religion. There are Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Argumentative Essay On Religion Imagine a world in which you are prohibited from traveling to another country, even though you are guaranteed the basic right to practice your religion. Remember how over fifteen years ago, people that shared nothing but your religion committed acts of terrorism, and people still hold you responsible. Picture an era where you and your people were persecuted, but now reciprocators of the oppressors are marching freely without a second thought. You can stop imagining now. Because this is the world we live in. A society of religious intolerance. It is defined as, "not respecting the fundamental human right of other people to hold religious beliefs that are different from your own" ("Religious Intolerance Introduction"). Around the world in six predominantly Muslim countries, citizens are forbidden from coming to America because of an executive order issued by the US. Likewise, on September 11th, 2001, a group of Muslim terrorists hijacked a plane, killing thousands. In present day, people only connected to them by their religion are still being judged for actions they didn't perform. Another situation in which bigotry occurred was in World War II. The Nazi Party attempted to gain control of many European and Asian countries, all the while trying to rid the world of races and religions they saw as inferior. Now the Neo–Nazis have the right to march freely and spread their hateful messages. Religious intolerance is a pressing issue, causing harrassment, inequality, violence, and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Religion Persuasive Essay Devry College| Atheism VS. Religion| English 135 Advanced Composition| | Richard Laugel| 4/16 /2012| | Abstract A look at religion, its beliefs and fallacies that throughout history have continued to have negative effects on contemporary society. The usefulness of religion is in the past, and its foundational books are fables. It is a man–made imposition which has been an enemy of science and inquiry. Religion has subsisted largely on lies and fears, and been the accomplice of ignorance and guilt as well as of slavery, genocide, racism, and tyranny. George Carlin once said "I worship the sun for several reasons. The first reason is that unlike god, you can actually see the sun which really helps with its credibility....show more content... I feel that grown adults have a predication to act like small children when it comes to religion, in that they often abandon all rational thoughts of logic, and turn to what they have been taught in their own personal sheltered religious beliefs. It's amazing how defensive people become if you question their god, worship or religious practices, while at the same time most are taught to believe that everyone else's opposing religious beliefs are inaccurate and that those following them will themselves go to hell. A huge problem I have with religious belief is that most people that call themselves faithful followers often do not "practice what they preach". In other words people often attempt to force religion and its strict policies onto others while they themselves are commonly the biggest violators of its basic rules. An example would be the numerous scandals involving priests molesting young children, or even regular Church attendants that participate in adultery, drinking, gambling and premarital sex. I feel that if you are going to make it your practice to faithfully observe your religion, then you should at least be capable of adhering to the standards and regulations that your chosen faith requires of you. Don't get me wrong, there are people that follow and adhere to their religious beliefs very closely and rarely sway from its Get more content on HelpWriting.net
