The women of 1819
Facing the repression and fighting against Spaniards, many groups of resistance were supported or directed by women. In the Casanare
plains, Santander´s group received considerable support from many landowners, especially in cattle and horses. Actually, in Socorro
there was a resistance group organized by Mrs. Antonia Santos.
Many of the independence movement leaders had fallen in the battlefields, others were executed, many were prisoners and not few had
chosen to hide in remote places. In Bogota, the capital city, women, wives, girlfriends, sisters, daughters and mothers of those patriots
suffered unimaginably, they wondered if they would see their beloved again, and when would all that torture end. The Spaniards had
seized some of the properties of these ladies, or their family´s property. Patriot women suffered punishment of exile in modest villages.
Bolívar, who was accompanied by General Santander and the patriots, created the strategic plan to cross the Plains, hike the eastern
mountain range, and cross the Pisba moorland. On the way they faced a lot of sufferings due to the cold, rain, and fatigue. Several
patriot women known as “juanas", helpers or nurses, collaborated with the big effort of the patriot army crossing the mountain range;
they contributed with clothes, horses, and even sending their own children to Bolivar´s army.
In the province of Tunja and other places many women dressed with the military uniform, and even used a spear or a rifle in the
battlefield. Some of these women were not only accepted in the patriotic army to participate in the fighting, they also reached degrees,
like the first sergeant grade of the cavalry.
A few days after the triumph in Boyacá, Bolívar traveled toward Venezuela and spent the night in Socorro. There was held an homage
ceremony for Antonia Santos and the other heroines of the town. Among other things he said in his speech: “Heroines of Socorro, in the
past, the mothers of Sparta did not ask for the lives of their children, but for the victory of their homeland (…) Mothers, wives, sisters,
who would be able to follow your tracks in the race of heroism? Will there be any men like you? No, no, and no. But you are worthy of
the admiration from the whole universe and the adoration of the liberators of Colombia".
Bolivar's army received a lot of support during the independence campaign of 1819, but it was the women who gave the higher note,
the ones that did the most for the independence, the ones who performed the miracle, according to the words of Bolívar.
Ladies from different social classes or organizations that cooperated in the freeing process, took great risks and provided support in many
different ways: with provisions, horses, clothes, weapons, giving valuable information, acting as nurses, as guides, as warriors, sacrificing
their goods, tranquility, health, and sometimes their own lives or their children´s lives.
Their contribution was vital for the success of the liberating campaign. Because of that, we must honor not only the brave soldiers who
gave us the freedom, but also those women of all ages and social condition that also made it possible.
